Chapter 263: 263. The Early Battle (3)

The Hell Knight finally landed on the ground and raised his own sword. At the same time, his relatively smaller figure began to grow.

From two feet, three feet, four... five... until he became a nine feet tall giant. His physical presence was enough to match some of the larger monsters such as minotaurs and trolls. Along with his high-ranking aura, the monsters naturally gave him some space.

On the other side, as Bors came to the frontline, there was also an empty space around him.

The soldiers naturally knew that if these two powerhouses fought right now, they probably wouldn’t survive the aftershocks of such a battle. Thus, they retreated even further, linking up with the golems who stood in front of the tall city walls.

Arrows and cannonballs rained from above, killing hundreds of monsters who were tightly pursuing those soldiers. This caused the monster wave to temporarily back up, hiding behind the ginormous summoned spirit.

It had been more than an hour since the frost turtle was conjured. It was already riddled with various wounds and healing it would put further strain on the summoners who were nearing their limits.

If this continued for a few more minutes, they’d be forced to end the summoning, placing the wave of monsters in a direct line of fire.

However, the soldiers up at the city walls were also not much better. Firing continuously had caused the archers to be tremendously tired. Even with a shift rotation of two to three archer teams, it was not enough to wash out the tiredness.

The first batch of ammunition was already about to finish. Only third circle and above archers could create magic arrows with their own mana. But there were less than a hundred of such soldiers in the royal army.

Also, the magic cannons ate up magic crystals at a rapid rate which couldn’t be kept up for long periods. Regular cannons couldn’t reach that far so those had to be switched out.

General Walris, who was temporarily put in charge of the wall defenses, considered pulling the manpower and resources from the northern side. However, this would create a hole in the defense.

If the enemy were to sneak from the north, the city would immediately be at risk. Unless Commander Bors were to finish off the leader of those monsters, a crisis was imminent!

Suddenly, there was a loud boom on the battlefield, which caused all eyes to converge at a particular location.

"So this is what you wanted by luring me here? A duel?" Issac mocked his opponent while swinging his sword.

"Indeed..." Bors calmly parried the strike before adding, "But what would a shameless demon know about honorable duels of us men?"

Thunderous bolts of lightning accompanied Bors’ counterattack, causing Issac to go on the defensive. In his giant form, he was rather slow. However, his defenses were much better and he could ignore the opponent’s relentless wind blades to charge up another skill.

Suddenly, Issac’s large armored figure felt difficult to lock into. It was as if he’d bypassed the laws of reality, turning into nothing more than an illusion.

This caused Bors’ subsequent attacks to go through the Hell Knight. However, the trajectories of those attacks were strangely distorted after passing through Issac’s illusory body.

Instead of falling on the monsters, the gusts of wind and bolts of lightning fell on the human soldiers.

Ancient Mystique!

This was indeed a unique skill with mysterious effects.

Fortunately, Bors’ had a great affinity with wind and thunder elements, allowing him to minimize the casualties.

After experiencing such a shock, the soldiers behind also put up necessary defenses, no longer believing that they were safe just because of their distance from the duel.

At this moment, Issac was about to follow up while his mystique form was still active. However, a languid cry reached his ears, causing him to look towards the frost turtle spirit.

It was disappearing bit by bit, as the mages were finally unable to maintain the summoning under the enemy bombardments.

"Watch out for the church battalion." Issac covertly sent a message to Minerva and continued his battle with Bors.

The zombie necromancer quickly disengaged from her side of the battle, letting her death knights to stall the enemy for a while. Using a spell, she told Linda and Ash to be on alert for any ambushes on the weakened summoners.

Tiara had already retreated into the middle of the monster wave after the magic circle broke up. She and the remaining six were consuming bottles of prepared mana potions which would help them recover a minimum amount of mana to provide support again.

Although they’d love to summon that evil spirit like in the dungeon raid, they weren’t able to promise their lifespan to it as before. Thankfully, the other totem spirits they’d made contact with were also quite ferocious.

Once the monster wave truly reached the walls, the fire serpent would be able to help massively during the siege. Since there were no siege machines on the monster side, achieving a breakthrough required immense power.

Thus, after recovering a certain amount of mana, the mages weren’t in a hurry to create another summoning array.

Instead, they rapidly split up, blinking towards the 4th circlers on their side to conclude the respective top-level battles.

Two mages went to the elves who were battling the southwestern general. Another two targeted the other general alongside Ash and Linda. The rest began to help Minerva to push through the foot soldiers ahead, casting large-scale magic domes to cover the frontline monsters.

At present, the cannons and the archer teams had stopped firing, waiting for supplies. The army below had already started to fend off the monsters.

Those that split off from the southwest division and the arrivals from the southeast formed a thick line of defense. However, keeping an entire dungeon’s monsters at bay wasn’t easy for even tens of thousands of warriors.

They were being slaughtered at a rapid rate even as court mages rained spells from above.

In the chaotic battlefield, goblins sneaked around, targeting those who were already fighting. Flying monsters such as harpies and gargoyles stayed relatively close to the humans that they battled, making it harder for them to be sniped.

With their unpredictable movements, they were like flies on fresh meat, killing one human after another.

The trolls clashed with golems, surrounded by human soldiers and smaller monsters. Their movements were slow but deadly, causing the field to occasionally shake. Some unfortunate ones were trampled from time to time.

Orcs were the bravest. Riding on direwolves, their chieftains led tough warriors to obliterate one regiment after another.

As the minutes passed, the monster side was slowly gaining an advantage. This was because the southwest division powerhouses had already fallen.

As for General Harrison, he was barely alive and had to be rescued by the church guardians. Unfortunately the military 4th circle mage couldn’t survive the combined efforts of corrupted mages who came as reinforcements.

This caused a power vacuum. Along with the monster wave being led by numerous powerhouses, it was starting to look grim for the royal army.

...

Inside the city walls, bells began ringing on individual chapels and watchtowers, prompting the terrified citizens to look out of their homes.

Tens of royal heralds rode on the empty streets, shouting, "A calamity is brought about by the demons! Henceforth, the curfew shall be lifted.

Bearing the will and the bloodline of the founding king, today, His Majesty, Averon Phillips II, urges all subjects; be they men, women or children; be they humans, beastkins or elves; be they citizens or visitors - all are to gather towards the Cathedral of Chastity!"

The heralds had voices that were far louder than an average person and they could be heard all over a district. They quickly passed by one street after another, disappearing before people filled the streets.

As minutes passed, the streets became more and more crowded. The anxious residents of Ulford headed toward the largest white building in the city.

Unknowingly, they began to pray to the God of Light. The faith in their prayers seemed to be guided by a strange rule as it turned into illusory rays of light, which congregated towards the cathedral’s holy cross.
