Chapter 29. Punished For Being Cute

Rosa Lin’s POV

My mind felt a little bit blank the moment he said that.

"You? You want to pick me up?" I asked.

I tilted my head to look at Mia, to see her smiling at me. Good Lord, how I hated that smile right now. I wanted to punch it clean off her face. She was teasing me, and I couldn’t help the blush that was rising to my face. I quickly averted my gaze.

"Um, I don’t know about that, Mr. Don. I mean, isn’t it a little bit risky?" I asked.

"What’s risky about it?" he asked. "I’m your uncle. I’m simply taking you to school," he said.

I chuckled. "Yeah. Yeah, I understand. But judging from the reaction from people with our interaction yesterday, and the way the campus sees me..." I chuckled nervously. "I don’t think anybody’s going to think that. They’re just—they’re definitely going to say things, and I’m just not really comfortable with all that yet. I’m just..."

"Why the hell do you worry about people’s opinions so much?" he said out of nowhere, making me quiet. "Come on. You’re an adult, for heaven’s sake, Rosa. You have to be able to think for yourself, do the things you want to do without worrying about the public opinion."

I looked down and tapped my foot against the floor. "It’s not that easy," I said.

"Of course it’s easy. You just need to turn the world out, focus on yourself, do what you love, stop fucking overthinking," he said. He sounded a little bit desperate, though.

I blinked. "But it’s going to happen anyway, and I can’t ignore it," I said.

He chuckled. "I could be your distraction," he said out of nowhere.

My head spun. What the fuck? I tilted my head to the side, my mind trying to adjust to what he just said to me.

"I don’t—I don’t—I don’t understand," I said.

He chuckled. "Forget I said that. But you can be rest assured nothing is going to happen, okay? And moreover... moreover, I am going to take you through the official park. Nobody has to see you," he said.

I bit down hard against my bottom lip. Yep, he definitely has a solution for every problem. I chuckled and shook my head.

"You’re not going to let me off so easy, are you?" I asked calmly.

"You know I am not," he said.

I hesitated and then looked at Mia. She was squinting her eyelids now, observing me from the distance.

"Fine. Okay. I am ready, and I’ll be waiting for you," I said.

"All right, great. Expect me in a few minutes," he said.

Then the call ended. I dropped my hands down.

Mia was looking at me with a raised eyebrow, obviously questioning me to spill. I let out a soft breath, then I slowly walked over towards her and stood before her. She stared at me inquisitively.

"Okay, so... it appears I might not be going with you in your car to school today," I said.

She smiled. "Let me guess. Your sexy uncle just happened to drop into your phone and offer you a sweet little ride to campus in his car?"

I looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "What do you think?" I asked sarcastically.

She giggled. "My eyes are rolling with a lot of suspicions here," she said.

I glared at her. "Don’t do that. Don’t do that, Mia," I said. "He’s not the one. I don’t have anybody," I said.

"I didn’t say anything! Why are you suddenly getting so defensive on me?" she countered.

I ground my teeth together. I pointed at her. "You should stop that. You’re baiting me," I said.

"No, I’m not," she said, but I could see the mischief in her eyes, the amusement on her lips.

"Stop that," I said, and tapped her nose.

She chuckled and shook her head. "I can’t help but think he’s actually a nice fellow," she said. "I guess his attitude is definitely matching with his looks and his sexy fitness and his kindness. Please tell me you’ve forgiven him already," she said. "He’s too good to deserve the heartlessness and the stubborn head you kept showing him yesterday."

I rolled my eyes. "It’s not like I could remain angry with him forever," I said.

She turned to look at me with a frown. "What was that supposed to mean? Did he win your heart?" she asked.

I turned around to glare at her. "Yes! He won my heart, but not in the way you’re freaking thinking! Stop thinking that, Mia. He’s my uncle, please."

She looked at me with a teasing grin. "Really? How did he win your heart?"

"He won my heart with brownies," I said. "Remember?"

She nodded her head slowly. "Oh! Yeah. Right. The mysterious, sweet, savory brownies," she said sarcastically.

"Fuck you," I said.

She chuckled and threw her head back, laughing out loud. I rolled my eyes and walked over towards the bed. I arranged my books, stuffed them inside my backpack, and then zipped it up.

"Well, I think he’s going to be a good distraction for you," she said.

I frowned and tilted my head to look back at her. "What’s that supposed to mean?" I asked.

"I mean, from the experience of last night up to this moment, it has definitely come to my notice that you are a little bit traumatized. I feel like everything about the campus has gotten to you, and it has sunk into your brain so deep that you are now beginning to see things," she said, squinting her eyelids. "So yeah. He’s going to be a good distraction to probably help you forget about imaginary Tim," she said.

I raised an eyebrow. I don’t even have the strength to keep arguing with this. I folded my arms and scrutinized her. This was getting really crazy.

"So you’re trying to tell me that what you’re doing right now is not some act—you are not trying to play games with me?" I asked.

She frowned. "Why the hell would I play games with you? Have I ever played games with you before?" she asked.

I bit down hard against my bottom lip. "I really do want to believe you, Mia," I said, "but trust me, this is all so weird as hell."

"How weird is it?" she asked.

"I am very sure we were both at the cafeteria alone. I am very sure that this guy approached us. I am very sure that this guy tried to make a move on me and introduced himself as Tim Kalem. And you yourself, you spoke with him! You were even trying to tease me throughout the whole discussion. I refused to give him my number, he told me he wasn’t giving up, and then he suddenly vanished when Mr. Don came into the restaurant."

I saw her tilt her eyes to the side like she was thinking about it.

"Uh... no. Doesn’t ring a bell," she said.

I observed and scrutinized her deeply. I saw the seriousness in her eyes. She meant it. She wasn’t joking. Something weird twisted in my gut. Oh my God.

"Do you need help?" she asked. "I mean, I have a therapist you could meet," she said.

I glared at her. "There’s nothing wrong with me!" I snapped and turned away.

"Well, it doesn’t look like it," she said.

I turned back to her, giving her a sharp glare.

"Okay!" She raised both of her hands. "I’m sorry. I’m sorry. You’re perfectly okay, as I can see." But I could still hear the sarcasm in her voice. "But, Rosa," she called.

I looked at her.

"Please don’t hesitate to let me know if anything is wrong," she said.

I nodded my head. "Of course. Why not? You’re my school mommy," I said with a pout.

She smiled at me and opened her arms. "Come give school mommy a big hug," she said.

I chuckled and rolled my eyes. I walked over towards her, and she pulled me into her embrace.

"Aww, that’s my cute little baby," she said, and planted a kiss against my cheek and then all over my face.

"All right, that’s enough," I said and pulled away.

She laughed out loud.

I walked over towards my bag, picked it up, and swung it over my shoulders as memories of everything began to flood through my mind.

Yep, definitely weird as hell.

Do I have to be worried?

Of course I have to be fucking worried! Because I don’t know what I’m dealing with right now. A ghost? An impostor? A real person? A wizard? A magician? I do not even know right now. Or maybe it’s just all in my head, and Mia is right.

I am definitely going nuts.

The honking sound outside suddenly caught our attention. I turned to Mia to see her wiggling her eyebrows at me.

"Ooh, our sexy uncle is here," she said. "Well, looks like I’m going to be going to school on my own today. But never mind, I actually had an appointment I need to deal with outside school. Was thinking about how to explain to you that I might be late, but seems like you’re not going to be late anymore. Come on, let’s go," she said, dragging my hand and leading me outside the room.

She walked over to her room, picked up her backpack, and then led me down the stairs till we got to the living room. She opened the front door, and the both of us stepped out into the cold morning air.

The both of us gasped at the same time.

"Oh my," Mia said.

"Fucking God," I completed.

The vehicle in front of Mia’s courtyard was definitely a no-nonsense on-the-road car. A glistening, nicely polished, shining black Lamborghini was sitting at the curb, looking lazy and glistening with its glamour and luxury. I felt something drop in my stomach. What the fuck? I thought to myself, staring at the vehicle with wide eyes.

"Well, he really went all out, huh?" Mia said beside me with a smile.

I was in a total daze; I didn’t know what to say.

She shoved my shoulders. "Come on, get going. He’s waiting for you," she said.

I chuckled and turned my head to look at her just as she waved at me. Then I walked down straight towards the car. I watched as the passenger door slid open, elevating the way Lamborghinis do. The luxury and the power was so intense; the aura of this vehicle made my heart spin. I was about to step into a fucking Lamborghini! What the fuck! My mind was screaming at the edges right now.

I stood by the open door, looking at it as it ascended and finally stopped. Then I bent down slightly to look at the lower car, to see Mr. Don sitting casually inside, reflecting that billion-dollar luxury power aura all around him.

"What’s up? Are you getting in or what?" he asked, smirking at me.

God curse that stupid, cute smile. He needs to be punished for it.
