Chapter 40. Needing Air

Rosa Lin’s POV

I saw the muscles on the side of his face clench, his jaw working slowly, his eyelids sharpened into slits.

"I am not playing games here," he said all of a sudden.

His jovial self was suddenly gone. That deep, dense darkness I kept sensing from him, that usually left me breathless, was back. I stumbled backwards, faltering a little bit. He stepped even closer.

I frowned. Why is he suddenly angry? I wondered.

"How did I screw up? Why don’t you tell me?" He asked .

I snorted. "Because you were stupid enough to do what you did. You knew the guy; you knew what he wanted. He wanted evidence to blackmail me. I already explained to you my tragedy. You’re supposed to fight for me, but you only made my life even much worse. You made my life a living hell. So yeah, that’s the biggest screw-up I’ve ever seen in a century," I said, unable to keep myself in check.

I saw his eyes flash. There was a blur of wind. One second he was standing before me. The next second his hand came down hard against my shoulder. The world blurred into a swirling mix of colors, and then I felt my back suddenly pressed against the wall, close to the door.

He pinned me close to the wall. I gasped, with my eyes wide, totally taken aback. He pressed his large hand on either side of my head, boxing me in, and leaned so close, I could feel his warm breath against mine.

Holy...

I swallowed hard. The proximity made my pulse race until I felt like I was going dizzy.

Oh my God, I thought to myself. He is so frigging close. And for some strange reason, I couldn’t push him away. I felt paralyzed.

"Mind how you talk to me," he whispered against my lips, his voice coming out in a deep, soft, sultry rumble.

I gulped. I scoffed, my breath hitching, but still trying to maintain some sort of dominance. "Why?" I asked. "So you can mess up my life?"

Goodness me, I thought to myself. Where did this level of boldness come from, Rosa?

I saw his cold stare, his eyes raking all over my face. Then he smirked. He shook his head slowly. He chuckled.

My goodness, I was running on adrenaline. I could feel the hot and cold rush through every nerve in my body: my spine, my chest, my head, my waist. I wanted to bolt off. I was literally shaking, probably almost visibly.

He chuckled for the second time and shook his head. "That pretty little mouth of yours will get you into trouble," he said. "I’m going to warn you again: be careful."

I swallowed hard. The dark side of me I never knew existed, that had suddenly materialized, spoke up once again. "Why don’t you show me how?" I asked.

I saw his eyes blaze. His pupils dilated. Then he growled and cursed, moving even closer. This time, his nose pressed completely against mine. He pressed his body against mine as well.

The heat overwhelmed me; something molten hot flushed at the pit of my stomach, straight into my core. The sensation was so sharp, I actually gasped, unable to keep it away.

What the fuck was that? I thought to myself.

He suddenly wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me away from the wall.

The fuck? I had to wrap my legs around his waist as an instinct to steady myself. He placed me against the table and dropped his hands on either side, boxing me in. I had to move my hands behind me, support myself on the table, and lean back to avoid his face from touching mine.

I tried to disentangle my legs from around his waist, but his hands instantly landed against my thighs, keeping my legs anchored to him.

"Why don’t you remain that way?" he said, pressing himself up so close until I felt every inch of him against my core.

Fuck! I thought to myself. My vision blurred for a fraction of a second.

Okay? What the hell is going on right now?

The heat I felt was not any normal heat. It was not caused from a very high temperature. This was something born out of... I don’t even know. I have no words for it, but it was piercing, searing, uncontrollable.

My lips shook. He leaned even closer until his nose touched my... My eyelids fluttered uncontrollably.

"What are you doing?" I whispered.

He chuckled. He then began to trace his lips against my cheek.

"It’s surprising," he whispered, his voice in a rumble, "how you can talk back at me with that sharp defiance, but can’t talk the same way to defend yourself and stand up for yourself against your peers. More like you only react to me. I like it. It’s fucking turning me on."

Okay, what now? I thought to myself.

He moved even closer, pressing himself more against me, anchoring my legs and wrapping them tighter around his waist. I felt the rigid hardness of him against my core. The friction made my vision blur for a while.

My lips trembled. My eyelids shook.

Oh my God, I thought.

I stretched my hand and placed it against his shoulder. "Mr. Don?" I whispered.

I tried to push him away, but he kept himself pressed against me, making it impossibly hard to pull away.

He chuckled. "You feel it, don’t you? No matter what you do, no matter how you fight it, it’s inevitable," he whispered against my ear.

I tilted my head back, arching my back involuntarily.

He chuckled. His hands slowly moved against my thighs, gliding upwards, caressing every bit of skin.

Fuck! I quickly grabbed his hand. "Stop!" I whispered. "Please stop," I said.

I was terrified of what I was feeling right now. I tried to shove him away, but he held himself harder against me. His other hand instantly slid to my back and then held my ass, anchoring me and keeping me pressed against himself.

The feeling of his large hand enclosed around my backside made my vision blur. I shivered in his grasp.

Heat bloomed on my face.

He chuckled. "Be still," he whispered against my ear.

I placed my hand against his chest. "Mr. Don," I whispered.

"Yes," he replied.

"Stop. This isn’t appropriate," I said.

He chuckled. "Oh, trust me, it is. You just don’t know."

His hand came down with a very sharp smack against my backside. I flinched.

My head felt hot.

"Oh my God," he groaned against my ear.

Okay, what the...

His lips slowly came down against my left neck.

"God, how I so want to erase that hickey," he said. He began to loosen the scarf I had wrapped around my neck. "It’s pissing me off."

He tossed the scarf to the side. I felt the warm heat of his lips trail down my neck until it reached that particular spot. Then he began to suck slowly against it.

The sensation I felt from him doing that made me shake uncontrollably, like I had caught a cold, or a fever. I couldn’t control it. I couldn’t fight it.

God...

His hand slid across my thigh, moving deeper until it reached the hem of my denim skirt. My hands moved on instinct, instantly clamping his hand as he moved deeper.

He chuckled. "Stop fighting it."

I quickly shook my head. "This is wrong," I whispered.

He chuckled. "With time you’ll realize just how true and divine this is," he said.

I frowned, flinching.

"Now I want the truth," he whispered against my ear. "Tell me, is this Mac’s hickey?"

The mention of Mac’s name and the hickey coming together brought about an irritating, foul feeling deep down at the pit of my belly. It instantly shattered whatever dark spell he held over me.

I frowned, feeling the surge of anger hit back into my chest, granting me the control that I had lacked for the last few minutes. I placed my hands against his shoulders. I pushed him away with every single muscle in my body.

He didn’t flinch, but he took a step back, looking at me, probably realizing my anger.

I was breathing hard now. All of a sudden my hair was sticking to my face. Where the hell did the sweat come from?

I swallowed, feeling the lump in my throat. I brushed the strands of hair away from my face and then struggled to get down. I saw the way he was staring at me. The haziness was clear in his eyes, like he wasn’t expecting me to stop—like whatever spell he had over me also clearly affected him.

Oh my God, no, I thought to myself.

I expected him to grab me and push me back down against the table, but he chuckled and shook his head. The amusement in his eyes annoyed me.

"You know, no matter how much you try to be resilient, it was clear you enjoyed that," he said.

I frowned. Oh my God, I can’t continue with this.

I shook my head quickly. "I need to leave," I whispered.

I tried to move, but he grabbed my hand, pulled me back, and then forced me to lean against the table. Then he boxed me in with his hands on either side of me, leaning so dangerously close.

I tilted my head back until I felt my waist ache, doing everything I could to avoid any possible contact of his face against mine.

He smiled. "I’m not going to let you go until you tell me the truth," he requested.

"What is it that you want?" I asked with a breathless, shaky voice.

"Is it Mac’s hickey?"

"I’ve already told you the truth!" I snapped. "I’ve told you it’s Tim!" I said out loud.

I felt him tense instantly.

Fuck, I thought to myself when I realized what I had just blurted out.

My body shook. My lips opened and trembled.

He raised an eyebrow. "Who is Tim?" he asked.

I saw the crease in his forehead, even darker than before. That seductive darkness that clouded him instantly vanished, replaced by a raging, dangerous one that suddenly seemed to make the air around us even thicker than before. It shimmered.

I almost choked. My heart thudded even faster in my chest. My pulse raced so much, I felt my knees go weak.

I shook my head and chuckled nervously. My brain, scramble fast. Think fast, Rosa. Think so fucking fast right now.

"Um, Tim... I know who it was. I just... I..." I began to ramble nonsense.

He frowned at me, waiting for my excuse.

"So, Tim?" he asked.

I chuckled nervously and scratched my neck. "I... it’s Mia’s joke name," I said quickly, blurting out the first thing that came to my mind.

He frowned and raised an eyebrow. "You don’t fool me, Rosa," he said, leaning even closer.

I jerked my head backwards, avoiding his face, staring at him with widened eyes.

"You know, I clearly remember you mentioning that name yesterday when I first texted you, when I asked you to guess who was talking to you. You mentioned Tim. Don’t lie to me. Who is Tim? The name can’t just materialize out of nowhere in your mind."

My body shook. I closed my eyes. "Look, I have told you. It’s Mia’s joke name, okay? I need to go, please."

I couldn’t catch a breath. I tried to move, but his muscular hands boxing me against the table made it hard.

"Please," I said, with a broken voice this time.

The crease on his forehead didn’t vanish. He glared at me, dissatisfied, but he slowly pulled away.

I didn’t hesitate. I dashed towards the door, grabbed the doorknob, unlocked it, and rushed out of the office as fast as I could.

Oh my Gosh!

I closed the door and then leaned against the wall beside it, breathing, panting hard. I needed air.

What the hell?
