Chapter 39: Chapter 39. Screw Up
Chapter 39. Screw Up
Rosa Lin’s POV
"Oh shit, she’s so shameless."
" I can’t believe it. For the second time."
"It’s crazy. I’ve never seen someone so disgusting."
The murmurs filled my ears. I kept my gaze to the ground, my vision blurry. The tears pooled in my eyes. I blinked rapidly, tossing my head from side to side as a means to make it stop. But it wouldn’t stop. A heavy surge of heaviness moved from my stomach up towards my chest and close towards my throat, like something was trying to escape from my mouth.
I felt so tense. I could barely breathe. I struggled with this force, trying to keep my tears at bay.
I can’t believe it. After his apology right now, I don’t even know what to say. I can’t believe that at the last second I was about to believe him. I was about to fall for his stupid schemes.
I chuckled and shook my head. I felt his gaze on me. Then I slowly lifted up my head to look at him. My eyes were glistening, but there was no sorrow in them now. I could tell. I could feel it among the mixed emotions flooding through me: anger, pure, resounding rage.
I saw that moment when the smile on his face dissipated. He blinked, looking at me like he was confused.
"Rosa," he called softly.
But before he could finish his sentence, my right hand swung towards his face with a powerful force, even before I could stop myself.
Smack!!!!
The sound echoed in the hallway, forcing everybody to flinch. A few students gasped and covered their mouths. Mac lost his balance and staggered to the side in disbelief, reeling back a little bit.
His friend, who had been holding him, frowned. "What the fuck? What gave you the guts?" He began to step close towards me, but Mac instantly extended his hand, stopping him.
"No need," he said.
The fellow glared at him. "What? Didn’t you see what she did?"
"Jerry, I said no need," Mac snapped.
Jerry froze, but then I saw his sharp eyes glare at me. He scoffed and shook his head, as if he couldn’t keep up with the shame. "You just couldn’t let yourself go along with it. You had to put the blame on him, right?" he said.
I looked at both of them. I’m done with this shit. I extended both of my middle fingers at them.
"Fuck the both of you," I said.
Jerry’s eyebrows shot up, but I couldn’t care to even stay back and see what his reaction would be. I adjusted my backpack, swerved around, and began to rush out of the building.
I don’t fucking care anymore. Let him do what he wants to do. Let him report what Mr. Don did. The anger had blinded my brain. All I could feel was molten heat, rage. I needed somewhere to vent on anything.
The flickering of camera flashes filled my vision. Countless students had their phones up. They had probably recorded the scene, but I couldn’t care less. I kept my head down, my footsteps rapid and brutal, smacking against the tiles until I got to the entrance of the building.
A figure was standing there, poised in the light, both hands in his pockets.
I froze. I caught sight of his face. They were blank. He stared at me like he was trying to read me.
I clenched my teeth tightly. I’m not really in the mood to calculate his shifting moods. Moreover, I promised myself I don’t even want to have any sort of discussion with him.
I rolled my eyes and scoffed. Everyone is pissing me off in this school, every fucking body. There is nobody I can look up to, except Mia.
I made my way towards him. He stared at me as I approached. He probably thought I was about to come and talk to him. But I only attempted to walk around him.
Before I could, he grabbed my hand, whirled me beside him, and then pulled me back, forcing me to stand in front of him.
I jerked, stumbled and then glared at him. "Leave me alone," I snapped, and I began to struggle, trying to pull my hand away from his grip.
"Can you stay in place?" he asked.
"No!" I snapped, continuing to struggle.
"Rosa," he called.
I didn’t listen.
"Rosa," he called again.
I kept struggling.
"Rosa!" he shouted this time.
I flinched and instantly froze, glaring up at him. "What’s your problem?" I asked. I saw the frown in his eyes.
"Why do you care?" I snapped.
He looked down at me, still keeping his strong grip on my wrist.
"You’re hurting me," I said.
"I won’t stop until you stay still," he said. He was serious.
I swallowed, trying to contain the blazing heat in my chest. I finally closed my eyes and let out a soft breath to cool off. Then I stood still, looking up at him.
He slowly relaxed and let go of my hand, bringing his hand to his side.
"What do you want?" I asked sharply.
"Why did you run back to him?" he asked all of a sudden.
"None of your fucking business," I said.
I tried to sidestep him again. He moved with a swiftness that caught me off guard, standing in front of me once again.
I closed my eyes and clenched my teeth. "Won’t you leave me the hell alone?" I snapped.
"I won’t if you keep talking to me like that," he said.
I gnashed my teeth together. "It’s none of your business," I said.
He didn’t reply this time. He stared at me with a blank face, both of his hands in his pockets. "You know you can’t avoid me forever," he said.
"What do you know?" I replied. "Just step out of my way. I said I don’t want to have any sort of discussion with you."
I was about to turn around and walk away. I walked past him, and this time he didn’t stop me.
"Rosie," he called.
What the fuck? Is that some sort of pet name? Goodness, he shouldn’t call me that again. If that is his plan to soften my heart, he has failed woefully. Because I’m done. In fact, after the end of today, I’m heading over to his apartment to retrieve my luggage. I will stay over at Mia’s. I don’t need his stupid job. I don’t need anything. I will survive on my own.
"Rosie," he called once again.
The name was like a piercing needle into my ears. Before long, I heard the loud thumping of his footsteps. It made my heart jerk. I tried to pick up the pace, but he was too fast.
It didn’t take long. I felt his hand snag around the back of my knees. I frowned, but before I could turn to figure out what he was doing, he bent down. He scooped me up, lifting me from the ground with his arms against my legs, making me fall over his shoulder.
My hand slapped against his back, and I flinched. "What the... What the hell are you doing? Put me down!" I exclaimed, wiggling my legs rapidly. "Someone is going to see!"
"Nobody will," he said, nonchalance thick in his voice.
What the hell is wrong with him? What is he doing? I thought to myself.
I saw him turn around and head towards the opposite direction as swiftly as he could. It didn’t take too long—we were back in the official section.
I gnashed my teeth together. "Mr. Don, this is ridiculous. What you’re doing is wrong. This is the school premises. People will see. The lecturers will talk."
"Let them see," he said.
I turned just in time to hear the clattering of footsteps. When I tilted my head up, I saw a few lecturers filtering out of the building, laughing, chattering, and discussing with themselves in the official section.
The laughter died away from their gazes when they spotted me hanging over Mr. Don’s shoulder.
Oh my God, heat flooded my face. I can’t do this. I clenched my teeth tightly. I begged inside as I watched them covering their mouths and turning away, ignoring both of us and pretending as though they didn’t see what was happening.
The heck? I expected at least one of them would come over and question what Mr. Don was doing. He didn’t even rush. He was moving slowly, casually, like he had every fucking right to be holding me like this.
Pure rage blazed through my brain. I pounded my fist continuously against his strong, masculine, solid lower back. Oh my God, he felt like metal. Is he made of bronze? I thought to myself.
"Mr. Don, this is monstrous," I said.
He didn’t reply. He took me straight into the official building. Lecturers and other officials were in different sections, some stepping out of offices, some holding papers. Their eyes were wide. Gasps rippled through the air.
I knew everybody was watching us.
" Oh my God, what is going on?"
" Why is he wielding a student like that?"
" Do you want to question him?"
" Hell no. I don’t even want to know what happened."
It seemed like everybody was avoiding him. Nobody wanted to question him. Why? He was only the dean. There was still a higher authority above him. Why wasn’t anybody doing anything? Countless numbers of them just ignored us. The whispers and the murmurs filled my ears, but nobody made a move. It wasn’t making sense.
It didn’t take long before he stopped before a door. He pressed against the handle. It clicked and opened. Then he stepped inside and shut the door behind him. It was his office.
He suddenly put me down. I stumbled, but I regained my balance. Then I adjusted my jean jacket and my jean flayed skirt, glaring at him.
"What was the meaning of that?" I snapped.
He only chuckled and adjusted his suit, casually placing his hands into his pockets. "I did nothing. I only took you to a more private place where we could talk properly and where I could correct you about your annoying behavior," he said.
I frowned and pointed at him. "You are the one with the annoying behavior! What the fuck was the meaning of that?"
He raised an eyebrow. He leaned closer to me, and I had to jerk my head back. "If I had told you to come along with me to my office gently, would you have come?" he asked.
I scoffed. "That’s the point! Why would I want to come with you to your office? I promised myself I wasn’t going to talk to you," I said.
He chuckled. "But yet here you are," he said.
I glared at him. "How did you do that?"
"Do what?" he asked.
"Nobody did anything! An authority figure should have stepped in front and criticized you for carrying me around school like that!"
He chuckled. "Were you really expecting me to be punished? Do you think I could get called out easily like that?" he asked.
I stared at him in a daze. Just what the fuck? "How did you do it?" I asked.
He chuckled. "I am the dean. Nobody can question my authority."
I rolled my eyes. "That doesn’t make sense. Your authority is not that powerful to override the school’s rules and regulations," I said.
"Wow," he said, folding his arms. "You seem to know a lot about the school’s rules and regulations. So why don’t you tell me? Isn’t smacking a fellow student in public against the school’s rules and regulations?"
I flinched and blinked.
"Yeah, I saw you slapping Mac so hard he nearly lost his balance. Do you want me to report that?"
I tilted my head to the side, looking at him as my eyelids fluttered. I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
He chuckled. "Relax, I’m not going to do that. I’m only trying to help you here."
I couldn’t say anything.
He breathed out. "Why did you go back to him?" he asked again all of a sudden.
I frowned. "What do you mean?"
He came even closer and stared down at me. I could feel the heat radiating from him. God, his height wasn’t doing me any good.
He moved his fingers and traced my cheek. I snapped my face away from his hand.
He chuckled. "You ran back to Mac," he said. "Why did you go back to him? What was the point of doing that?"
I huffed.
"Because I was trying to correct your screw-up."
