Chapter 52. Not Your Blood Relative

Hours later, they finally got back to Maya’s apartment. Rosa wearily dragged her luggage, scraping her legs against the floor with her luggage trailing behind her as she walked towards the sofa, as though the life had been drained out of her.

Maya stood by the door, holding onto the handle, looking at Rosa with her eyebrows raised, her eyes darting from Rosa back to her luggage at intervals.

"What is wrong with her?" she muttered to herself. "Did she drink herself to a stupor in her dream or something?"

She scoffed and shook her head. She turned around to set up the security system, ensuring the door was locked.

She turned around and looked at Rosa.

Rosa moved her luggage towards the center of the room, let go of it, and then crashed back against the sofa, letting her legs lift up before dropping them to the ground. She stared into thin space, lost in her own world. Her mind was totally elsewhere.

Mia chuckled, shook her head, and dropped her purse by the side wall mounted rack, close to the main entrance. She casually walked over towards Rosa and stood in front of her in the center of the luxurious living room, her eyebrows raised.

She watched her, studying her.

Rosa didn’t even notice that she was standing in front of her. Her focus was on the ground. Something was clearly bothering her.

Mia closed her eyes and exhaled. Then she bent down, placing her hand against her knee.

"What’s wrong?" she asked softly.

Rosa slowly turned her head to look at her, suddenly coming back to her senses as she saw the way Mia was looking at her worriedly.

She chuckled and frowned.

"Oh, um..." she started. "Nothing," she said quickly.

Then she took off her backpack and dropped it on the chair beside her.

Mia raised an eyebrow at her.

"You are doing it again."

"Doing what?" Rosa asked, scrambling through her bag as though she didn’t understand what Mia was talking about.

Mia chuckled.

"Something bothers you. You worry yourself about it, and when you see someone finally caring, you just close off," she said.

Rosa looked at her and frowned.

"I’m not closing off. I’m good."

Mia scoffed and shook her head.

Ish, she thought to herself. There is really no redemption for her.

She watched Rosa, fiddling through the contents of her backpack. Then she tilted her head to the side.

"Why are you here?" she asked.

Rosa froze.

She turned to look at her with a frown. Confusion was obvious in her countenance.

"I don’t get it. I don’t understand. What do you mean by, ’Why am I here?’" she asked.

Mia chuckled.

"Well, I remember a certain handsome young man requested for you to stay with him due to the fact that you both are relatives. Something which I actually thought would have been of a very huge benefit to you, considering how well-to-do he is to have such a luxurious car and such a luxurious place. He’s clearly capable of taking care of you," she said.

Rosa looked at her with her eyebrows raised. Then she scoffed and shook her head, rolling her eyes.

"Yeah, right. About that, I changed my mind." She replied.

Then she turned furiously back to her backpack, like what she had just said was actually nothing but a simple decision. Nothing literally big.

Mia tilted her head to the side, squinting at Rosa.

"Wait, what?" she asked.

Rosa didn’t reply. She placed her hand against her knee.

"Why?" she asked quickly. "That was literally a big opportunity for you there. Do you realize that rejecting that also means rejecting the job?" she said.

"Yeah, I realize that," Rosa replied.

Mia’s eyes widened.

Is this girl unhinged? she thought to herself, blinking rapidly.

"Rosa!" she called out.

Rosa didn’t look at her.

Mia slapped her leg.

Rosa flinched, rubbing her leg furiously.

"Ouch! What the fuck?" she exclaimed.

"I’m talking to you. You look at me when I’m talking to you."

Rosa frowned and then batted her eyes at her, rubbing her now-stinging leg.

"I asked a question. Why did you refuse it?"

Rosa looked at her, then breathed out.

"It’s nothing, seriously. It’s none of your business. Isn’t it my personal decision?" she asked, turning back towards the bag.

Mia blinked at her, squinted her eyes, and leaned against her leg, scrutinizing Rosa.

She saw the way Rosa fiddled with her bag, her eyes darting from the bag to Mia at intervals, like she was confused, like she had no idea where to look.

"Oh, really, huh?" she asked.

Rosa didn’t reply.

Mia chuckled and shook her head.

"I should have known."

Rosa still didn’t look at her.

"Known what?" she asked, her eyes darting here and there.

Mia chuckled.

"Why don’t you start by explaining why your cheeks are so red?"

Rosa froze.

Her eyelids fluttered.

She turned to look at Mia, then slowly lifted her hand towards her cheeks, rubbing them gently before turning to the side.

She quickly brushed her hair from the side of her head to cover her face, instantly shielding her cheeks.

Mia smirked.

"Nothing," Rosa said quickly.

Mia tilted her head to the side, squinting at her with amusement.

"Well, well, well. It is certainly not nothing," she said.

Oh my God, Rosa groaned inwardly. Well, that escalated too fast.

Mia jumped up from the ground, sat down beside Rosa, and then turned her away from her bag, forcing Rosa to look at her.

She held both of her hands, looking at her with excitement.

"So tell me, what did he do to you?"

Rosa frowned.

What? she thought.

"Did he do something naughty?"

Rosa’s eyes widened with disbelief.

"What the fuck?" she exclaimed.

But Mia didn’t look like she was listening to what she had just said.

"Come on, what did he do?"

She winked and wiggled her eyebrows continuously.

Rosa felt her face heat up all the more.

"Are you okay?" she exclaimed, snapping her hands away from Mia’s grip and then wiping them against her shoulder.

Mia flinched and looked at her.

"What, girl? Why are you so worked up?" she asked.

"Don’t you find it irritating?" Rosa asked.

Mia chuckled.

"Why? Why should I find it irritating? I mean, it’s actually kind of cute."

Rosa’s jaw dropped, widening all the more. It practically fell to the floor.

She scoffed, her eyelids fluttering as she looked away. She scratched her neck, then shook her head.

She batted her eyes and pointed at Mia.

"Oh, Mia, you are certainly crossing a boundary here. Please stop giving me ideas," she said.

Mia chuckled.

"Who the hell is giving you ideas?"

She relaxed back against the chair.

Rosa turned to look at her, her mouth forming a sharp circle and her eyes wide. She raised both of her eyebrows.

"So wait, what you’re opening your mouth right now to tell me is that he’s attracted to me?" she asked.

Mia looked at her with a smirk, then raised an eyebrow.

"Obviously. What do you think?" she said.

Rosa’s face reddened to a deeper shade of red.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" she exclaimed. "He’s my uncle."

Her voice boomed all over the living room.

Mia couldn’t help it.

She erupted, throwing her head backwards with laughter that rang throughout the apartment, forcing Rosa to look around, unable to contain her fluttering eyelids.

"What’s so funny?" she exclaimed.

"Oh my God, Rosa," Mia said, tracing her palm against her forehead. "Everything is so funny."

Rosa shook her head.

"You are unhinged," she said.

Mia chuckled.

"I should be the one telling you that."

Rosa opened her mouth to say something, but she had no words. She just stared at Mia in a daze, like she thought she was clearly stupid and definitely needed to visit a psychiatric hospital.

Mia chuckled and raised both of her hands.

"Okay, okay," she said, trying to contain her laughter. "I’m sorry. That was uncalled for. But just calm down for a bit and listen to me."

She paused.

"You are clearly aware he’s not your blood relative, right? I mean, you should remember that," she said.
