Chapter 723: Kai vs Mutants (Part 1)

Chapter 723: Chapter 723: Kai vs Mutants (Part 1)

"Huh. Holy shit, that’s straight up out of a horror movie. Just looking at it is making my skin crawl," I shuddered uneasily.

I was currently to the west of Sanctuary Theta, by a small grove of trees. And the place was absolutely teeming with scores of fungal Mutants.

There are several species of fungal Mutants, of varying Threat Levels. My main target for this Quest is the most powerful and dangerous species of fungal Mutant, a Fungal King.

It’s a massive mushroom, so big that it’s absolutely towering over the trees by dozens of meters. And it happens to produce all of the other fungal Mutant species.

Fungal Kings are Catastrophe Level Mutants, and while they’re not exactly the most mobile creatures, being rooted to one spot and all, that doesn’t mean they’re helpless.

They’ve got several dozen spiky vines all around them that they can swing around at any threats, and they can spew out massive clouds of deadly spores. Well, between my regeneration and immunity to status effects, the latter isn’t a concern, but this thing’s still going to be a pain to kill.

The only way to eliminate one is to destroy a small Core, which the Fungal Kings can freely move around their bodies. Based on the Union’s intel and research, most Fungal Kings opt to bury their Cores underground. But they can’t put it down too deep, only as far as their roots go.

Because if they detach the Cores from their bodies, they’ll die. Oh, and if all that wasn’t enough, they can also rapidly regenerate any damage inflicted.

So, yeah, killing these things is far from easy, but their own defenses aren’t the only problem. There’s also the swarms of other fungal Mutants they produce.

Among Low Level Threats, there are three fungal species. Mold Stalks, which are fungal stalks that grow to about ten feet tall and generate a steady stream of spores. They also spew out large spore clouds when threatened, but otherwise, they’re pretty helpless and easy to kill.

Then, there are Burst Spores, which are floating fungal balloons that erupt and release spores when attacked. That also kills them in the process, so it’s a pretty pointless defense mechanism.

And the third Low Level species are known as Mold Men, walking mushroom creatures that grow to about five feet tall and spew toxic spores. Their bodies aren’t very strong though.

There technically aren’t any Mid Level fungal Mutants...that said, there is a Mutant species called Spore Toads, large toads that grow up to around knee-height of an average person.

They have a symbiotic relationship with fungal Mutants, they eat any insects that prey on the fungal Mutants, and they also consume spores. They don’t attack the fungal Mutants, and the fungal Mutants don’t attack them either.

Spore Toads can fired out the spores they consume from holes on their backs, and they have springy flesh that can be hard to cut through. They also have sharp fangs, their main method of attack is biting. But ultimately, they’re pretty minor threats.

Moving on to High Level Threats, there’s one such fungal species, known as the Fungal Serpent. They’re literally just fungus in the shape of snakes, they slither around rapidly, fire off spores and their bodies are supposed to be pretty slimy.

They constrict around their targets and smother them with spores. Also, while they’re called serpents, their heads just look like regular mushrooms. Which gives them a rather, uh...phallic appearance.

And finally, the Critical Level Threat among the fungal Mutant species, the most dangerous one after the Catastrophe Level Fungal Kings. They’re massive mushrooms about the size of a small tree, and the lower halves of their bodies are a mass of a fee dozen vines.

Like the other fungal species, they can fire off spore attacks too, and they’re supposed to be able to move around at high speeds by slithering around on their vines.

So, yeah, that about covers what I’m about to deal with here. Honestly, if it were just the Fungal King, and maybe a handful of the other species, I’d be fine with this.

But there’s just so...so damn many of them! It’s legitimately making me kinda queasy, there’s this thick mist of spores flowing out around the massive swarm...even though I know the spores won’t affect me, it just looks so gross, I don’t want to breath that shit in.

<You should quit stalling and just get to it already>

<Delaying it isn’t going to change the situation, so you might as well get it over with as quickly as possible>

I’m not stalling, I’m just taking a moment to prepare myself mentally, that’s all!

<Yeah, sure, whatever you say>

Okay, then, how about I just summon you and send you down there to deal with the crowd?

<Hey, we agreed that I won’t be participating in combat anymore!>

<You know I just don’t have the knack for it, I stopped training ages ago>

Yeah, I very begrudgingly agreed to that. Fine, whatever, I’ll get started. Aria’s using Spirit Fusion with Superbia for her Quest, right?

<Yes, she is>

<I’ll let you know if she wants to switch to one of the others, though I’d say that’s pretty unlikely>

"Alright, then. You’re up, guys...<Emerge, Apostles of Wrath, Greed, Gluttony, Sloth, Lust and Envy: Ira, Avaritia, Gula, Acedia, Luxuria and Invidia>," I chanted, a burst of energy erupting around me as I summoned six of the Apostles and took off my Suppression Ring.

Immediately, the fungal Mutants went into a frenzy, several of them starting to rush this way.

"<Oh, yikes...damn, Boss, those things look super gross>," Frowned Invidia warily.

"<For once, I agree with the incel. And since they’re fungi instead of animals, I bet my Bewitching Mist won’t work on them, Daddy>," Luxuria sighed wistfully.

"<And there’s so many of them. This is going to be such a pain>," Groaned Acedia in dismay.

"<Hm, I like mushrooms, maybe they taste good>," Mused Gula thoughtfully.

"<So, what are your orders, Master>?" Inquired Avaritia, cracking her neck.

"<Just say the word, Chief>," Added Ira, looking ready to spring into action.

"Go thin out the herd. Clear a path to the big one, I’m counting on you guys," I responded, the six of them wasting no time in rushing forward.
