Slayer: I Kill All Dragons For Power
Chapter 103: Battle At The Crossroads [4]The silence suddenly disappears and sound comes crashing back all at once.
BOOM!!!!
ROARRRR!!!!
"—MOVE!"
Sylvia’s voice hits my ears.
Everything is almost painfully loud now.
It causes me to stumble for half a second.
The dragon takes advantage.
Its claw comes towards my side.
CLANG!!!!
Laz blocks it before it reaches me.
"Focus Kain!"
"I am!"
"Didn’t look like it!"
It is a little hard when sound suddenly comes crashing in like a wave.
I push myself back into position.
The unknown dragon looks towards the cannon again.
We’re just standing between it and the objective. It just wants to wipe out the cannons which we can’t allow it to do.
"Keep it here!" Onyx shouts from somewhere behind us.
The flame dragon circles above, then another magical round shoots past.
BOOM!!!!!
The second armored dragon turns sharply and avoids most of the blast, but the explosion still catches part of its wing.
ROARRRR!!!!!
Pieces of armor fall from the sky.
The battlefield is finally starting to turn in our favor.
The unknown dragon realizes it too as it steps backwards.
"No chasing!" Onyx shouts.
Right. I can’t just chase after the dragons because that’s how I will get myself killed.
But it doesn’t retreat, instead it looks towards the cannon one more time.
Then its body lowers.
"It’s going for it!" Sylvia shouts.
The dragon bursts forward.
DASH!!!!
It is rushing towards it much faster than I expected.
Laz tries to intercept.
The dragon swings its head and knocks him aside.
WHAM!!!!
"Laz!"
He rolls across the ground.
Sylvia attacks its side.
CLANG!!!!
The dragon ignores her and continues for the cannon.
I look towards Onyx.
He’s too far away.
The cannon crew are trying to load another round.
They won’t make it.
I need to stop it.
But charging directly into it would be the same mistake again.
Think.
The wounded front leg might be the way I can make this work.
I move diagonally instead of straight at it.
The dragon continues forward, getting closer and closer to the cannon.
I lower myself and go into the Valtor Stance.
Don’t overpower it.
Redirect and Timing.
The dragon steps onto the wounded leg.
Now.
DASH!!!!
I rush from the side.
My sword goes towards the wound but the dragon sees me and lifts its leg.
Exactly what I wanted.
I don’t swing.
Instead I drive my shoulder into the side of its body while all of its weight is resting on the other front leg.
WHAM!!!!!
Pain shoots through my shoulder... But the dragon shifts.
Its claws miss the cannon and slam into the stone beside it.
CRASH!!!!!
"Fire!" Niko shouts.
Fire? Oh, shit!!!
I throw myself away.
BOOOOOOM!!!!!
The special round fires directly into the dragon’s chest.
The distance is so close that there isn’t even time for it to react.
CRACK!!!!!
The shell breaks against its scales as symbols across it glow bright blue.
For one second everything freezes.
Then—
BOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!
The explosion throws me across the ground and I quickly try to cover my face as pieces of stone and scales fly everywhere.
My ears ring.
At least I wasn’t the one directly taking the attack this time.
I slowly push myself up as smoke covers the area.
"Kain!"
Sylvia reaches me.
"I’m fine."
"You always say that."
"I actually mean it this time."
She looks me over quickly.
"You’re bleeding."
I look towards my arm to see a small cut.
"That’s nothing."
"For once, you’re right."
We both look towards the smoke.
Something moves so I lift my sword.
The unknown dragon stumbles out, a massive section of its chest is torn open.
Green blood pours onto the road.
One of its front legs barely works, yet it is still standing.
"These things really don’t die easily," Laz says as he approaches.
He has blood running down the side of his face.
"Are you okay?" I ask with a bit of concern.
"I’ve had worse."
"As long as you’re good."
He gives a small nod.
The dragon looks between us before it looks towards the cannon once again.
The weapon is damaged from the explosion, probably won’t even work properly now.
The dragon slowly steps backwards.
This time I can tell that it isn’t preparing to attack, it is just leaving.
Every part of me wants to go after it. But I know that it isn’t the best idea when the other dragons aren’t dead yet.
Dragon essence. That strength is really something that I could use.
Would it really be—
"If they retreat, let them retreat unless I say otherwise."
Onyx’s words immediately return to me.
I stay where I am as the dragon backs further into the ruins.
Sylvia looks towards me.
"You aren’t going after it?"
"No."
That feels strange to say.
But it is the right decision.
"We already did what we needed."
The unknown dragon disappears behind the buildings, then a roar fills the sky..
Not long after I see the flame dragon rises higher, then the damaged armored dragon follows.
They’re leaving too.
"Hold positions!" Onyx shouts. "Nobody chase!"
The slayers stay where they are.
Nobody breaks formation as the dragons continue flying away.
The tracker is motionless now. Completely dead in the dirt.
I look over to see the first armored dragon is still surrounded by slayers.
Its body isn’t moving either.
Two dead, three retreating. I’d say we definitely did our job to the best that we possibly could here.
The five dragons that were about to attack Aldion are gone.
We’ve definitely weakened them.
"Did we win?" I ask.
Laz laughs.
"Depends on what you call winning."
"We stopped them."
"And Aldion has three fewer healthy dragons to worry about."
He looks towards the sky.
"I’d call that a win."
Sylvia walks closer to me.
"You actually listened."
"I’ve been listening."
"Sometimes, but not always."
I stare at her.
She smiles.
"Still proud of you."
I don’t really know what to say to that.
So I look away.
Laz starts laughing.
