The fire continues crackling quietly between Raven and I.

Neither of us speaks for several minutes.

The only sounds filling the clearing are the insects hidden within the grass and the occasional pop coming from the burning wood.

For the first time since the fight... It kind of feels a bit peaceful at the moment.

It is something I haven’t really experienced in awhile if I’m being honest.

My body still aches from the dragon’s attacks, but compared to earlier, it almost feels manageable now.

Maybe this system thing isn’t really lying to me about anything after all. I still don’t understand anything about it, but it seems strong.

I slowly flex my fingers again.

The soreness remains, yet my muscles don’t feel nearly as exhausted as they should after a fight like that.

Honestly, I probably shouldn’t even be sitting here anymore after the amount of damage I took in that fight. Then again, maybe some slayers would’ve walked out the same way as me.

I definitely feel like there is a slight difference after absorbing that "essence" as it is called.

So exactly how much stronger did that Dragon Essence make me?"

The response comes almost immediately.

~Minimal improvement detected.

Minimal?

~One Dragon Essence is insufficient for significant growth. As it’ll take more than that to notice more changes.

I kind of expected a little bit more than that if I’m being honest...So one dragon isn’t enough to make a noticeable difference?

~Correct.

Well... That certainly keeps things realistic at the very least.

I wasn’t exactly expecting to become the strongest slayer after killing a single dragon anyway.

But I do need to try to understand this whole system thing better if I want to utilize it more.

Then how many dragons do I need to kill?

Silence lingers for a brief moment.

~Insufficient data.

You don’t know?

~Every Slayer possesses different compatibility so growth varies from person to person.

So even the system doesn’t know everything. That is kind of a relief in a way.

It almost feels like we’re figuring everything out together. That means I can still achieve more strength through natural means but it does help me.

Especially when it comes to dragon essence.

I stare into the flames.

Can anyone else get a system like me?

~Negative.

I cross my arms.

So I’m really the only one?

~Confirmed.

Current compatibility...

One.

That answer definitely surprises me for a good moment. No one else can get this system that I have.

Jun, Raven, and even the elder knew something was special about me...

Now even the system has confirmed it.

I don’t feel all that special though. If anything, I have a lot of responsibilities to uphold instead.

If nobody else can access such a thing... Then I definitely have to do this.

You mentioned skills earlier.

~Confirmed.

They’re locked?

~Confirmed.

So how do I unlock them?

Another brief silence follows.

Almost like the system is processing the question.

~Continue slaying dragons, Increase synchronization, and meet required conditions.

Conditions? That is definitely not something I’m used to. I guess it is best to keep asking this system things about it.

What kind of conditions?

~Unknown.

You really don’t give me a lot to work with, huh.

~Information unavailable.

I let out a quiet sigh.

Talking to this thing is more exhausting than fighting the dragon.

It doesn’t like to give actual answers to most of my questions. That is definitely a bit of a pain to deal with.

I shake my head.

Across the campfire, Raven glances toward me.

"Are you really coming all the way back with me?" I question.

"Yes. I need to see what this elder of yours says about everything," Raven answers.

I can definitely tell she is determined to find out more about me and what I’m capable of... Even though I’m not really that strong yet.

Then again, trying to explain anything about this "system" feels strange. I don’t think anyone would truly believe me about what is inside my head.

No.

I’ll keep this to myself.

The system suddenly speaks again.

~Recommendation.

What now?

~Open Status.

The blue window immediately appears again.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

User: Kain Valtor

Class: Slayer

Level: 2

Condition: Recovering

Skills: Locked

Titles: None

Dragon Essence: 1

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Nothing changed. Why would it want me to see this again?

I already saw this.

~Focus.

I don’t say anything and start to focus instead.

Immediately...

The words begin glowing one after another.

Condition, then Dragon Essence, and class.

I stare at each one carefully.

So these can all change?

~Confirmed.

So, every one of these really can change... Not just the level?

~Correct.

Most of my attention had been on the level itself.

I hadn’t even considered everything else.

My condition had already changed from nearly dying...To recovering.

That means the system constantly updates itself.

Almost like it’s watching everything happening to me. How odd.

You’re always observing me then?

~Correct.

That is definitely a bit odd but I’ll get used to it I guess.

~Observation noted.

I pinch the bridge of my nose.

This is going to take some getting used to.

~Confirmed.

The status screen disappears again as I stare back into the fire.

The flames dance quietly while my thoughts continue racing.

Every answer I have received from the system just keeps giving me more damn questions about the whole thing.

But still... I understand a lot more than I did earlier today which is definitely a plus side to the whole thing.

I slowly look toward the stars overhead.

There are countless dragons still flying across this continent, countless villages still waiting to be destroyed, and countless families that could end up just like mine.

I tighten my fist.

I’ll kill every last one of them.

"Kain you really do want to kill the dragons, don’t you?" Raven questions as she stares back at me.

"Yes. I want to kill them all," I answer without hesitation.

"I believe you’ll definitely be capable of doing that at some point. Just don’t forget other slayers exist to help too," Raven says with a small smile.

It is kind of nice that she is as supportive as she is about it all. Someone truly believes I can make a difference.
