The campfire slowly burns lower as silence settles between Raven and I. My answer seems to be the one she wanted for the time being.

Neither of us really have much to say after that.

I continue staring into the flames while trying to understand everything that happened during the fight.

The strange voice, the glowing light leaving the dragon, and that strange screen appearing in front of my face.

None of it really makes a whole lot of sense to me. That is exactly why I’m hoping for the elder to give me some answers when we finally get back.

"You’re awfully quiet now," Raven says while tossing another small branch into the fire.

"I’ve just got a lot on my mind," I reply.

"I figured as much," Raven says.

She doesn’t push the conversation any further.

Honestly... I’m grateful for that. This has been quite the eventful hunt with a lot to think about.

I just need some time to truly understand it all. One thing for certain is... I don’t intend to change my mind about the dragons.

The warmth from the fire slowly begins to relax my body as I lean back against the log behind me.

Sigh. Maybe a little bit of sleep would help me ease my mind.

It feels as if I hear that voice from earlier for a second there, but then it quickly disappears again.

...

My eyes immediately snap open.

"What?" I question.

Raven looks toward me with a confused expression.

"What do you mean?" She questions.

"Didn’t you just say something to me?" I ask with a bit of confusion in my voice.

She slowly shakes her head.

"I haven’t spoken for at least a minute now," Raven answers with a confused look across her face.

So that voice was definitely not Raven which means the weird thing from before is speaking again after it agreed not to.

~Correct.

I thought you were going to keep quiet until I called for your or whatever?!

~I apologize. I must’ve let that slip without realizing it.

Raven blinks.

"Kain are you okay?" Raven asks with concern in her voice.

"Yes. I’m sorry, just tired," I assure her while sitting back down.

She looks at me with a bit of a concerning look on her face.

"Are you sure?" Raven asks.

I quickly shift my focus back to her.

"Sorry... I thought I heard something before but it was nothing," I respond quietly.

She studies me for several seconds before finally sitting back down.

"Okay. I trust you," Raven says while crossing her arms.

She doesn’t question me any further.

There is absolutely no way I’m going to tell her that I’m hearing some strange voice inside my own head. It would definitely make me seem like I am crazy or something.

I let out a slow breath.

Though I do need to know what you are exactly.

Silence follows for a few moments.

~The Slayer System. I did mention this when I first spoke to you.

I still don’t really understand what you’re saying to me right now.

~I exist to assist qualified Slayers.

Qualified?

~Confirmed.

So you’re saying that I am qualified to have this slayer system you are talking about?

~Confirmed.

I stare blankly into the campfire.

So you’re inside my head?

~Correct.

Great. I don’t really know how I feel about that just yet.

~Your level of enthusiasm has been noted.

Was that supposed to be a joke?

~Negative. I was just making an observation.

...

Somehow that answer makes it even stranger.

I rub one hand across my forehead.

What was that thing I saw after the dragon died?

~Status Interface.

The blue screen?

~Confirmed.

So what exactly is the purpose of the whole screen that I saw

~It is primarily for helping track your stats, traits, and skills.

I don’t really know what any of that means either.

I let out another sigh.

Can you show it to me again?

~Confirmed.

A familiar blue window immediately appears in front of my face.

Unlike before I don’t panic as much and actually decide to give it a read.

Dragon Essence: 1

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

I continue staring at it.

What exactly is Dragon Essence?

~Energy acquired from slaying dragons.

So that strange light from before is from killing the dragon?

~Correct.Your body successfully synchronized with it.

I look down toward my hands.

So that’s why I suddenly felt different?

~Partially correct.Your physical condition also improved following synchronization.

I clench my fist.

It definitely doesn’t hurt as much as it did after the fight. But the pain is nowhere near as bad as it was.

This is all a lot to take in.

So every dragon leaves this behind?

~Confirmed.

What do I benefit from absorbing all of this dragons essence?

~It is capable of making you stronger as you continue to kill them. You also gain traits, skills, and strength as time goes on.

I stare into the fire once again.

So every single dragon I kill is going to help me get stronger? That is definitely going to make my climb a lot easier.

I’ll continue to hunt down the dragons until the war is over and until they can’t stop me anymore.

It also makes a lot of sense why Jun looked at me the way he did now.

All of it it starting to make sense now. Even Raven being as surprised as she was before is adding up.

I slowly tighten my grip.

~You possess a unique compatibility.

I let those words settle for a few moments.

Unique or not... If this power can help me kill dragons, then I’ll use it every single time.

I won’t waste something that could help me protect others.

There won’t be anymore mistakes going forward, not ever again. This power will guarantee me that.

~Just know you still have to work for it.

I wouldn’t expect anything less. Earning my strength is better than just being given it right away.
