She just said I have the eye of a dragon.

BA-DUM. BA-DUM.

My heart begins to race as a bit of panic goes throughout my body. My hand instinctively moves up towards my eyes.

~I have it handled.

A weird feeling goes through my eye for a moment before a look of relief appears on Ravens face. Whatever the system just did... It helped.

"I guess everything is okay," Raven says with a bit of uncertainty in her voice.

What exactly did you just do?

~I have temporarily hidden the side effect from the dragon essence.

Am I becoming a dragon...?

~Well, that is a possibility but you can refuse to do so if you prefer.

Why would I want to become the very thing I hate... That just doesn’t make sense in the slightest!!!!

~Calm down. You have a lot to process, along with the newly acquired skills you got.

I scratch my head as pain goes through my stomach.

Right, I’m still injured. I thought I’d be completely healed after absorbing all of that dragon essence.

I’ll definitely need some time to recover from everything.

~Yes. That will also give me time to handle the side effects of the dragon essence absorption.

Good to know.

I stand up, pain still lingering near my stomach. Luckily Raven and Veronica patched everything up.

"Everything is okay," I assure Raven while looking towards her.

"You had the eye of a dragon for a moment there Kain," Raven replies with some worry in her voice.

"It was just a temporary effect, nothing more," I assure her once more.

She looks at me with a bit of disbelief on her face.

I know it probably doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to her yet... But I don’t understand it either. This is happening to me at the same time as I’m trying to get a grasp on it.

Everything I just dealt with was...

~Different. Yes, that is the best way to describe it.

Can you just go away for a little while? Just give me some silence I mean.

~I understand. Acknowledged.

It goes silent within my mind as I look around at the aftermath of what happened.

Dead dragons lay all around the destroyed forest, but we are standing still. My eyes drift down to my hands.

Blood is all over them... Even then I can still see my scars.

I’ve come a long way since I first lost it all. I have killed dragons now and I am slowly getting stronger. Would my parents be proud of me?

A question I’ll never get the answer to.

At least I survived another battle against them... That is what matters at the end of the day. I’ve proven that I can stand a chance against them.

Clench.

I clench my fists as I look around once more.

Xareth. He doesn’t understand it yet, but it was a mistake to leave me alive. I’ll make sure he knows about how big of mistake it is when we meet again.

"Kain?" Veronica calls out my name.

I break away from my thoughts and shift my gaze over to her; she stands before me, covered in blood.

Some hers while the rest is from the dragons themselves.

"Yeah?" I question with a soft tone.

"We survived the ambush after all," Veronica responds with a small smile.

"We did... Even with the odds against us," I say quietly.

"You both got lucky," Raven chimes in.

Both of us look towards Raven.

"I appreciate you landing that attack, it really did give me the chance I needed," I say to change the topic.

I can see a faint smile appear on her face for a moment before her serious demeanor begins to show again.

Pitter patter. Pitter patter.

I glance up to see rain is starting to come down.

"I was just helping a slayer out," Raven replies. "Don’t think about it as anything more."

"It was just appreciation, nothing more," I assure her.

When was the last time I got to experience rain? Maybe it was the day before the village got torn apart.

Yeah. That sounds about right.

I was helping Dad pick some fruit and then it started to pour... Quite the memory. He was in such a panic about getting everything back without getting drenched.

It didn’t matter because we got drenched regardless.

Rain runs down my whole body, slowly washing away some of the blood.

"We should probably find some shelter while the storm passes," Raven suggests.

"There’s a cabin a bit behind us," Veronica responds while pointing towards the direction.

Ah, the cabin. It is definitely a decent spot to hold up since no one else was there. It was just used as a place to ambush us intially.

"You sure more dragons won’t show up?" I ask with some caution in my voice.

"They won’t," Veronica responds with some confidence in her voice.

With that I follow behind Veronica as she leads the way back to the cabin.

Pain is still lingering throughout my wounds.

But after a bit of walking we make it back to the cabin without any problems popping up this time. The cabin looks exactly how it did before... Just some slight burn marks around the hill.

Step. Step.

Veronica pushes the door open and we enter behind her.

Thud.

After closing the door I fall to my knees for a moment as my body finally starts to feel all the fatigue.

All that healing didn’t really make a difference for me like I wish it would’ve. The wounds must’ve been too much for it to completely recover.

I need to ask the system more about that recovering thing I saw in the stats menu.

It feels like it should be a way to heal some of my wounds but every being can "recover" over time... That’s why I need to know what’s special about it.

"Are you okay Kain?" Raven asks with worry in her voice.

"I’m fine. Just need to rest a bit," I answer while leaning against the wall.

Ahead I can see Veronica with a small smile as she sits up against the wall too.
