Silence lingers between Ash and Me for a few moments as the wind brushes through the field while neither one of us moves.

My grip around the wooden sword doesn’t loosen in the slightest.

"I want to kill every last one of them," I repeat with certainty.

Ash studies me for a moment.

"I figured," Ash says.

She doesn’t look surprised by what I just said, instead mostly like she expected that answer from the beginning.

"What?" I question.

"You thought I’d tell you revenge is wrong?" She asks.

I don’t answer.

"Because I won’t," She says with a serious expression on her face.

That catches me off guard.

She slowly walks towards me until only a couple of feet separate us.

"If dragons destroyed everything you cared about then I’d expect you to hate them," Ash says.

Her green eyes remain fixed on mine.

"But hatred isn’t enough to kill them," She continues.

She reaches forward before grabbing the wooden sword from my hands and I don’t even try to stop her.

She turns it over a few times while inspecting it.

"Tell me Kain, What happens if a sword has a crack running through the middle?" Ash Asks.

I shrug.

"It breaks of course," I answer.

She lightly taps the side of the wooden blade.

"And what happens if you keep swinging it anyway?" She asks.

"It’ll eventually shatter," I respond softly.

Ash nods.

"You’re exactly the same. So you need to focus on fixing the blade before swinging it again," Ash speaks with a calm tone.

I understand what she’s saying but it still doesn’t make me want to wait around to heal.

Just I can’t get any stronger if I keep pushing myself while hurt. I hate that she’s right about this whole thing and that I have to lay around again.

I run my hand through my hair for a moment before turning back towards the shack.

It would be better to just go back now so I don’t cause any problems with Ash. I’d rather keep it peaceful here if I can since I don’t have anywhere else to go.

With that last thought I go back to the shack and eventually end up sitting on the bed.

I look around the room for anything that might stick out since I’m not sure what to expect. Nothing really sticks out throughout the shack though.

It just has some old paintings of nature and maybe some old leather from animals the elder might’ve hunted in the past.

How can I fix a broken sword? Especially if it is just referring to me at this point in time...

That is something I didn’t give a whole lot of thought to. I’ve never really gone through anything like this before so it is definitely different.

Footsteps approach before opening up the door to the shack. Is is the elder who enters the room.

"I heard your first lesson wasn’t bad at all," The Elder says with an impressed tone.

"I’ve learned I can endure pain during a fight but it won’t get me anywhere," I reply while looking down at my hands.

The scars along my hands remind me that I really did get spared. More scars probably cover other parts of my body from the day I went through that house.

"Being able to fight through pain means you have potential to be quite strong Kain. Slayers are one of a kind so if you have the ability to block out the pain, take advantage of it. It is good," The elder says while making his way over to the table.

He begins to pour some tea into a cup before sitting down.

"Ash made it sound like it was bad though," I reply with a bit of confusion in my voice.

"Because not every swordsmans can utilize it properly. Being able to ignore pain could be good or bad based on how you go about it," The elder says as he goes to sip his tea.

So it has to do with the fact that she never found a way to properly utilize it? Being able to ignore pain in a fight could definitely be useful... But also deadly.

That’s the way he’s putting it at the very least.

I stand up from the bed and head over to the table the elder is sitting at.

"I can’t lay around waiting to recover Elder," I speak with more of a serious tone.

He gestures for me to sit down so I do.

"I understand. Drink some tea and then you can continue with your lessons," He responds softly.

"Today?" I question.

"Tomorrow," He answers instantly.

I let out a sigh before sipping some tea. The taste is quite bland but it is making me feel kind of weird. The pain is slowly starting to disappear.

"W-What is with this tea!?!" I question while sitting the cup down.

"It is a special remedy that I often use for helping the process move along," He answers with a small smile.

That’s why he wanted me to drink some of the tea. It will help me get away from the pain a lot faster? I didn’t think such a thing would be possible from some sort of tea remedy...

Then again, magic is rumored to exist throughout the world. It makes sense since dragons exist and slayers are people with the power to fight them.

I can’t really be too surprised by it all.

"How come you aren’t fighting the dragons yourself elder?" I ask with a curious tone.

"I’m too old to be fighting dragons Kain. That is something I might’ve considered in the past but now I’d rather give a young man the opportunity to do it," The Elder answers.

"So you were a slayer?" I ask.

"I was indeed a slayer in the beginning. Over the years we slowly died out. A lot more people wanted peace instead of war so I ended up settling down," The Elder answers with a calm tone.

Everything is starting to make a bit more sense now.
