After that small discussion with the Elder I end up going to sleep and morning arrives faster than I realize.
The pain throughout my body has settled down a lot compared to yesterday but the scars covering my arms remain exactly the same.
But finally I slowly sit up from the bed before stretching.
I guess that tea really does work wonders... I’m surprised but kind of glad at the same time.
A knock reaches the door.
"Kain?" Ash calls out.
"I’m awake," I answer while grabbing my shoes.
The door opens a moment later and Ash glances over me before giving a small nod.
"You don’t look like you’re about to collapse anymore," She says.
"I’ll take that as a compliment," I reply.
"It wasn’t one. Just an obvious observation," Ash says.
She immediately turns around and starts walking away.
"Right," I reply quietly.
I quickly follow behind her.
The morning air is a lot colder today than it was yesterday which is kind of nice.
Mist hangs over the fields while the mountains in the distance are barely visible.
A place like this shouldn’t even exist after everything that happened. But I guess even dragons can fly past such a peaceful spot without realizing who hides here.
Ash eventually stops in the middle of the field before looking back towards me.
"Pick up your sword," Ash instructs.
I glance down to see the wooden practice sword from yesterday is already laying in the grass.
At least she made sure everything is ready to go before we get started. I can’t say I didn’t expect it to be that way, just it is hard to read her.
I bend down before picking it up and she takes a few steps away before turning back around.
"Show me everything you learned yesterday," Ash instructs.
I grip the sword with both hands.
"I kind of thought we’d get into fighting a bit more intensely if anything," I say while looking down at the sword.
"You need to know how to properly wield a sword before sparring more with me," Ash responds calmly.
"I understand that but I think I learn better through experience," I say with confidence.
She lets out a quiet laugh.
"You don’t become stronger with just experience. You also need to know how to properly use a sword and how to counter attacks," Ash replies while smiling.
"Fair enough," I say softly.
I take a deep breath before stepping forward and then I swing my sword through the air.
Whiff. Pause. Whiff.
I took a few moments to adjust to the different ways I could swing the blade, even if it felt odd to me.
Eventually each swing starts to feel a little smoother than yesterday but something still feels off.
Ash watches without interrupting me.
Only after several minutes does she finally speak.
"You’ve got one major problem Kain," Ash says while looking me up and down.
I stop swinging.
"What is it?" I question with confusion in my voice.
"You rely on that anger of yours way too much," Ash answers.
I furrow my brow.
"How can you even tell?" I ask while staring back at her.
"It means every swing I can sense your intent. That means the enemy will also be able to do the same thing," She answers with more of a serious tone.
I didn’t really think about it like that because I didn’t realize it was that noticeable.
My grip tightens around the handle.
"You aren’t fighting him yet. You are fighting me," Ash continues.
She points towards me with her own wooden sword.
"Is there really that much of a difference?" I ask.
"There is," Ash answers without hesitation.
She slowly walks over before standing directly in front of me.
"Your feet," Ash says while observing me closely.
I blink.
"My feet...?" I question.
"They’re too close together," Ash answers without hesitation.
Before I can react she lightly kicks the inside of my foot, forcing me to spread my stance a little wider.
"There. You’ll lose your balance a lot easier standing the way you were," Ash continues on.
She steps back.
I look down for a moment and It honestly doesn’t feel all that different.
I do understand that it does kind of matter where you place your feet but was it that bad?
As I look towards her she can probably notice I’m in disbelief a bit.
"Sometimes a demonstration is just better I suppose," Ash says quietly.
Without another warning she places one hand against my shoulder.
Push.
My body stumbles backwards but I manage to keep myself standing this time.
"Huh... It worked," I mumble.
Ash folds her arms.
"Now hold your sword again," She instructs.
I do exactly as she asks.
She walks around me once before stopping behind me.
"Your grip is too tight as well," Ash says with a serious tone.
I glance down.
"Does it matter how hard I grip the damn sword?" I question with a bit of frustration.
All she does is let out a small sigh before she reaches over and gently adjusts my hands on the handle.
"If you squeeze it that hard your arms become stiff," Ash says with the same serious tone.
I loosen my grip just a little.
"Like this?" I question.
"That’ll do. Now wait a moment for me to walk away, then swing," Ash responds.
She walks back in front of me.
Whoosh.
The wooden blade cuts through the air.
It actually feels a bit lighter than before with a lot less resistance.
"My turn," Ash speaks up.
Ash raises her own wooden sword before taking a single swing.
WHOOOSH!!!!
The sound alone surprises me because she barely looked like she put any effort into it.
There really is that much of a difference between us. It also means I have a lot more work than I previously thought too.
I’ll have to work extra hard if I ever want to catch up to her or even the elder in his prime years. I’ll have to get him to tell me some stories if he really was a slayer.
She lowers her sword once again before looking back towards me.
"Try to mimic the exact movement I did there Kain," Ash instructs.
She points towards the open field in front of us.
"One hundred swings will probably be sufficient," She continues.
I look at her.
"...Seriously?" I question.
"Did I stutter?" She responds.
I let out a quiet sigh before walking a few steps away.
A hundred swings... I guess this is just the way it goes if I want to actually learn how to use a sword. Hopefully this will all be enough for me to eventually fight against the dragons.
I raise the wooden sword.
Swing. Again. Swing.
I repeat the process for quite awhile as minutes slowly turn into what feels like hours.
Each swing begins to feel a little smoother than the last as one hundred swings turns into two hundred, then three hundred.
The burning in my shoulders grows stronger with every time I swing the sword but I refuse to stop.
If this is what it takes to become a Slayer... Then I’ll go until my arms want to fall off.
