I stand there looking at the aftermath of the damage the dragon caused.

Even though the dragon died, everyone here couldn’t be saved. If I would’ve just had the chance to save them before having to help with the dragon...

~Kain it wouldn’t make a difference. The people here had their fate decided the moment the dragon arrived.

What the hell does that even mean?!?! Huh?!

Screw fate! I could’ve done something here to help them and instead I attacked the dragon like I was told.

~Not everyone can be saved. You are in the middle of a war after all.

I head down from the rooftop after that and walk over to Sylvia. She has also come back down from where she was standing.

The dragon is dead with no sign of essence that I can absorb this time.

It makes sense that I don’t even get anything from it since I didn’t kill it... But didn’t Veronica kill one last time and I still got the chance to absorb?

~The dragons had forced the essence to appear which is why you could steal it like you did.

That makes a bit more sense.

I don’t remember getting an answer about that back then so that gives me more of an idea on how this works. I’ll need to make sure I’m getting the killing blows when I hunt dragons if I want their strength.

"Kain there was nothing you could do," Sylvia says with a soft tone.

"I don’t really know if I believe that," I reply with a serious tone.

Stomp. Stomp.

The sound of loud footsteps begin to approach us.

I’m really hoping it is not another enemy right now... I don’t want to fight anyone else at the moment.

I turn my head to see the man from back in Hyvale, the one wearing the heavy armor. He’s got his giant sword resting against his shoulder as he approaches us.

"Huh. You kids beat me out here," He says with a deep voice.

Sylvia steps forward.

"Sometimes you just have to be faster," Sylvia replies as she gives a shrug.

I watch as his eyes glance around at the area itself.

"It sucks that the village couldn’t be saved but at least you stopped the dragon from killing more people," He says with a relaxed tone in his voice.

Is this really just how a slayer thinks about these things? Just it sucks?

A lot of people died here today... Families upon families of people. Not a single soul made it out of this situation alive.

"I apologize I haven’t introduced myself to you two. You may call me Aaron," He introduces himself while slightly bowing his head.

"I’m Sylvia and this is Kain," Sylvia responds before I can.

Getting a better look at his armor now... I can see the amount of wear on it. He’s had that armor for quite some time and it has seen its fair share of battle.

"Nice to meet you both," Aaron says with a genuine tone.

I just give a nod as I still ponder on everything that happened.

"Don’t mind him, he just isn’t used to this kind of situation," Sylvia speaks with a bit of a calm tone.

"Because I could’ve saved some of them," I chime in with a bit of frustration in my voice.

That’s when Aaron hunches down in front of me.

"I’ve watched a lot of people die in front of me Kain. Every single person is someone I wish I could’ve saved," Aaron says with a serious tone. "But sometimes we don’t get to keep everyone safe."

That hits me harder than everything else did.

I don’t want people to keep dying to the dragons so I need to get stronger. That is the one constant I’m starting to realize more and more.

Strength is the key to me keeping people alive.

"That’s why I need to get stronger," I reply with a serious tone.

"Kain I’ve been fighting in this war for five years and I still am not strong enough to save every person I come across," Aaron says with a serious look in his eyes.

He is hard to ignore with those cold grey eyes of his.

Even after five years of fighting in this war isn’t enough for him to save the people he comes across.

But he also doesn’t possess the same kind of ability that I do... This damn system. It is a way that I can truly get stronger while still earning my way.

It doesn’t give me everything but the dragon essence itself makes a difference.

~I am glad you are starting to understand how I work better.

You’ve made it hard for me to ignore it. Every conversation has taught me a lot more than you realize.

~Trust me, I have seen it. I am in your head after all so everything flows through me in a sense.

Yeah. Yeah. I understand.

"Hmm. Regardless, welcome to the war Kain," Aaron says with a small smile on his face.

"How can you smile about that?" I ask with a bit of confusion in my voice.

"Having slayers to watch my back makes me happy. We’ve been on a steady decline for a good while so it is nice to see a fresh face," Aaron answers with a bit of excitement in his voice.

I forgot that slayers have been a bit more on the rare side lately. It is hard to remember where I heard about it but that is the truth at the end of the day.

We are considered a rare breed since we excel in fighting back against the dragons.

Just, it doesn’t feel that rare when I keep running into slayers myself. Raven, Veronica, Sylvia, and now Aaron. Actually I think Ash is a slayer as well but she doesn’t really talk about it much.

I’ve met a bunch of slayers in a short span of time, yet none of them seem to be capable of keeping people alive.

That’s exactly why I need to be different.
