A feeling of comfort forms within my chest as I lay there with Sylvia.
Even though I’m feeling nervous about this whole situation, it is starting to feel a bit more comfortable. Nothing is really happening that bothers me.
"I know. It is new to me too," Sylvia says with a soft tone. "I don’t always trust people but you kind of proved that I have no reason to doubt you."
"You know I didn’t do anything special, right? I have mostly just been by your side fighting against dragons at the moment," I reply with a bit more of a calm tone.
She traces a finger along my chest before speaking.
"I don’t really know how to explain it right now Kain," Sylvia says.
The conversation kind of dies down after that last response as we both lay around for a good while. Eventually she falls asleep, then I do a bit after her.
No nightmares bother me this time... Nor do I have any dreams about any events.
In fact, I wake up to the sight of Sylvia still laying on my chest as the morning sun peeks through the cracks of the tent.
I can’t help but notice how pretty she is, even while sleeping on my chest.
Even now I can’t ignore the beauty she has... But it can’t be something I focus on right now either...
~You can slay dragons and find something to care about Kain.
Is that how you’d describe this feeling?
~No, but I think you need to come to the realization of what is developing on your own.
That’s about what I should’ve expected from you. I don’t know why I thought you would maybe give me an answer on that.
"Morning," Sylvia says quietly as she lifts her head from my chest.
"Morning," I reply with a soft tone.
She sits up slightly and stretches a bit before looking back at me.
"That was definitely some of the best sleep I’ve gotten in awhile," Sylvia says with a big smile on her face.
I think it might’ve been the first time in awhile that I didn’t have some sort of nightmare or dream plaguing me at all... Not in the slightest.
"I agree. That was probably the best sleep for me in awhile as well," I reply while slowly standing up.
"Then we should share a bed roll more often," She teases a bit.
"It would save us on carrying two around all the time," I respond without thinking.
"Haha. It is decided then," Sylvia says while finally standing up herself.
I don’t say much else as we both pack up before exiting the tent. The slayers are still doing whatever it is they do in the distance.
Conveniently they turn to wave to us as they notice we are finally out of the tent.
I give a small wave back before starting to make my way for the exit out of the outpost.
"Shall we actually continue now?" Sylvia asks as she catches up to me.
"Of course," I answer with no hesitation.
She gives a wave to them as we finally leave the outpost behind.
The road ahead doesn’t look as grim as it did yesterday but I do feel a bit better about being a slayer.
Originally I didn’t know if I could cut it as a slayer because I’m still pretty damn weak... But I’m starting to think that I can get somewhere.
I killed a captain yesterday.
My body is getting stronger and I’m starting to learn how to adapt to the way they fight more. I’m using the same tactic as them and it is working in my favor.
~Being able to adapt mid fight is definitely a rare thing that most people struggle to do.
That’s exactly why I’m going to make sure I pay attention during every single fight I’m in.
~You truly are growing Kain, I don’t just mean in strength either. Your mentality with everything is getting better.
I’m just putting more thought into my situations.
The system goes silent after that and I continue the walk with Sylvia.
We talk for a little while about the outpost and I finally understand everything they said to me after killing the captain.
From my understanding... Slayers also have ranks and some even form small armies if they can. The outpost was one of the small armies that formed but the general disappeared.
I didn’t really hear that at the time but I’m starting to understand more about the war.
Slayers aren’t just fighting by themselves for the whole thing... They are also forming an army to fight back against the dragons constantly.
It would be suicidal to just fight high ranking dragons without some sort of backup.
It explains why it was a big deal for me to kill a captain on my own. Most slayers don’t fight against them in their own like I did.
~Correct. I did warn you about fighting the captain as well but you managed to win.
I’ll still be cautious around higher ranking dragons but I can’t let them go. I’d rather take my chances than wait for more slayers to arrive.
That also makes me wonder what rank Xareth is. He must be high up there since the other dragon at the time spoke to him with a respectful tone that a subordinate has to give.
~I am glad to see you piecing everything together.
"Kain? Did you hear me?" Sylvia asks while standing in front of me.
"I apologize, I did not," I answer honestly.
"I was saying about how we should try to head for one of the kingdoms soon," Sylvia says as she moves back to my right side.
Kingdoms? I didn’t really give them much thought before this.
"What would be beneficial about going to one?" I question with curiosity in my voice.
"A place with a bit more of a guarantee with information, weapons, food, and somewhere nice to sleep," Sylvia responds with a casual tone.
It’ll probably be along our path somewhere anyway.
"Sure. Let’s head for one," I say with a calm tone.
