As Ash opens up the door she stops in her tracks, almost as if something is wrong.
I brush past her to see a man standing in the corner of the room with the elder, both just talking.
It doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense why she froze like that when this guy doesn’t appear to be an enemy. They look like they are having a pretty normal conversation.
Does she have some sort of past issue with this guy or something?
I notice the elder looks over towards us immediately.
"Ahh, welcome back guys. Come take a seat, I have someone for you to meet," The Elder says with a calm and collected tone.
Ash remains silent for a couple more seconds before finally stepping inside.
I follow close behind her while keeping my eyes on the stranger.
He doesn’t look all that intimidating, but something about him is definitely off. I just can’t place my finger on why that is yet.
Short dark brown hair, a long black coat that reaches almost to his knees, a sword hangs from his waist, though the handle appears worn from years of use.
His posture is quite relaxed as well
The stranger slowly turns toward us.
"So this is the boy?" He asks while studying me from head to toe.
"Yes. This is him," The Elder answers.
I raise an eyebrow.
"You know who I am?" I question.
The man lets out a quiet chuckle.
"I know quite a bit about you," He answers.
Before I can question him further, the Elder clears his throat.
"Kain, this man is an old friend of mine," The Elder chimes in.
"We fought alongside each other many years ago," He continues on.
The stranger folds his arms.
"That makes us sound older than we really are," The Man speaks up.
The Elder smiles.
"We are old," The Elder responds.
The man sighs dramatically.
"I was hoping you’d avoid saying that," He says.
Ash finally speaks for the first time since opening the door.
"What are you doing here?" Ash asks.
Her voice is noticeably colder than before.
The man glances toward her.
"I could ask you the same thing. I heard he awakened another slayer so I came to check it out," He responds to her as he looks right at her.
His eyes return to me.
For some reason it feels like he’s looking straight through me instead of at me.
He slowly walks closer before stopping only a few feet away.
"Hold out your hand kid," He instructs.
I hesitate.
"What for?" I question.
"I just want to confirm something," He responds.
The Elder gives me a reassuring nod before I hand over my hand.
He places two fingers against the back of it.
Silence.
His expression doesn’t change for several seconds.
But then his eyes narrow ever so slightly.
"...Interesting," He says quietly.
He removes his hand and Ash immediately notices his reaction.
"What did you feel?" Ash manages to ask before the elder.
The stranger doesn’t answer right away.
Instead...
He continues staring at me.
"Potential. But anyone could sense such a thing without a problem," He answers.
He pauses.
"But also something I’ve never seen before," He continues on for a second.
What the hell does that mean? I don’t really understand what’s happening here exactly but this is pretty weird. Especially after I just finished training.
"Do you sense the same thing I do Jun?" The Elder asks with curiosity.
"Definitely. This might be the first slayer in centuries to be able to do this," Jun answers with a bit of shock in his voice.
"Do what?" I question.
"When you do start killing dragons at some point... You’ll be able to absorb their power Kain," Jun answers without hesitation.
Thoughts run through my mind for a moment but then quickly disappear as I realize there isn’t much for me to think about. Everything is being told to me without hesitation.
So I’ll be able to get stronger from killing dragons... That is definitely quite a big step up from just training all the time.
I wonder how powerful I’ll be able to become. Dragons do plague the entire continent and I know there are quite a lot for me to get stronger from.
Were all slayers capable of such a thing?
"I haven’t heard of such a thing ever," Ash speaks up with confusion in her voice.
"It is definitely rare, but not impossible. He’ll become a strong slayer indeed," Jun responds while crossing his arms.
The Elder looks at me with a bit of disbelief for a moment before looking back at the others.
Maybe he didn’t truly believe I had such a powerful ability? I didn’t even know I did either until today.
I also have no clue how to actually use it in the slightest either.
Everything is going to be trial by fire until I know how to use my slayer capabilities against the dragons.
"He definitely needs to test it," Jun says while looking at me.
"Kain is still learning how to fight properly," Ash chimes in.
"He’ll be able to handle himself," Jun responds confidently.
How can he say that with such confidence when I never even fought against a dragon? It doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense to me.
I am not strong in the slightest.... Especially not strong enough to fight against a dragon. Even if it is on the low tier end of things, I doubt it would be a good fight for me.
"Ash you need to prepare him for a hunt," The Elder instructs.
She lets out a sigh before looking towards me.
"Fine. I’ll take him to prepare then," Ash replies with a bit of disappointment in her voice.
She gestures for me to follow her so that’s exactly what I do. We go right back outside to the fields, but she doesn’t seem disappointed about having to do this.
She seems upset that they want me to go out on the hunt already.
