I let my anger slowly disappear as the days go by.

We took the assessments as the woman instructed and it went well, just didn’t expect to do any of that. It did land us in quite an interesting spot here.

Sylvia also made it clear she wants to fight by my side so they didn’t separate us.

I also had to demonstrate my stance to give a better understanding of what it is capable of. Most of the reactions I got were quite shocking since slayers don’t always make a stance.

But with everything finally done, I can focus again.

"Kain!" A man shouts.

I turn my head to see Onyx. He is one of the captains that leads some of the attacks on the dragons.

He is a pretty beefy guy with a full set of heavy black armor, short blue hair with a streak of white towards the front, blue eyes, and he is definitely older.

"Yes?"

"We need to start prepping for an attack."

I slightly glance over my shoulder, looking towards Sylvia in the distance.

"When exactly is this attack?" I ask with a serious, yet curious tone.

"I’d say we are planning to conduct this attack tonight."

An attack tonight? I have been waiting to be brought into the actual fight here... But I didn’t expect it to be at night. I have not fought in the dark against anyone or anything before.

Every fight has been during the daytime.

"Kain?"

"Yes, sorry. How are we going to prepare for this?" I ask curiously.

"Just follow me and you’ll see."

He begins to walk towards the barracks side of the fort. A bunch of slayers are already waiting around for us when we arrive.

Most of them look like they are ready to go.

I just look toward Onyx, then back at the other slayers.

A bunch of different equipment is already in front of us, all sorts of spears. They look to be infused with some sort of strange glow that I can’t understand.

"Magic is going to be one of our strongest weapons," Onyx speaks up.

"I don’t really know much when it comes to magic."

"That’s why we have these slayers here to help."

One of them stands up.

"We’ll take care of the magic."

I don’t really know much about these guys but we’re all slayers. That alone is something I’m going to have to use to trust them when it comes to the fight ahead.

~I think playing it safe is still wise.

That was going to be my approach regardless.

"With that sorted, let’s start bringing the equipment out to the wagons," Onyx instructs.

I help bring the crates out to some of the wagons and it only takes a little while since there are plenty of us here.

The wagons are packed to the brim now.

"So what’s your name?" A voice asks from behind me.

I turn around.

A slayer with short black hair, somewhat spiky towards the front, grey eyes, and who is slightly taller than me is standing before me.

"Kain."

"Nice to meet you Kain, I’m Laz."

We shake hands after that.

"I believe we’ll be working together for this attack so let’s do our best," He says with a smile.

"That is the plan."

After the introduction with Laz is over, we get onto one of the wagons.

This will be the first time I get to see what dragons are like on the actual Frontline. I need to be ready for the experience difference that they’ll probably possess.

I know this will definitely be a way for me to get stronger.

~You definitely could use the strength.

I take it that I don’t really have a whole lot? It has been awhile since I’ve looked at that stat thing.

~I can pull it up if you like.

It is alright for right now. I’d rather look at it when I actually get some more dragon essence.

Silence lingers for a few moments.

I shift my gaze towards the gate in the front.

"Alright we’re heading out!" Onyx shouts.

The guards immediately start to open up the gates for us.

Here we go.

I lean back against the wooden backboard as we finally start to depart from the fort. It seems like we are heading a bit east from here.

The skies above are rather dark though.

Were the skies always this dark? I didn’t really look towards it much since the last night I spent with Sylvia. It has been pretty hectic since we actually got situated here.

Oh, shit.

She is supposed to be with us as well but I didn’t see her with any of the wagons. Hopefully it’ll be fine.

"So you haven’t been out yet?" Laz asks with a curious tone.

I shift my gaze back to him.

"Not really."

"The frontline can be pretty intense at first but it’ll get easier with time," Laz assures me.

"I’m sure I’ll be fine. I have fought a lot of dragons already."

"They are quite different out here."

"I have heard about that."

He crosses his arms.

"Dragons tend to be a bit stronger than the ones further into the continent. Some have armor, some possess crazy senses, and I have even seen one with strange magic."

Strange magic? Could he possibly be referring to the black flames...? That is the one I’m curious about the most.

I can’t do anything about it right now, but knowing it exists would say a lot.

"What kind of strange magic?" I question with a serious tone.

"I can’t really explain it right now. That might be a better question for Niko."

"Is he on one of the other wagons?" I ask curiously.

"Yes. He is the one who spoke earlier before we got started with loading the wagons."

"Ahh. Alright."

This "Niko" will be the best way to confirm if the magic is similar to what I keep seeing in those dreams.
