The sound of the wheels hitting against the rough terrain is all I can hear until we finally come to a complete stop. We are quite a bit away from fort Mythos now.

"Seems like we are here," Laz says with a serious tone.

He hops off of the wagon before I can say anything.

I really hope Sylvia is actually here since they did seem to be pretty understanding of our request. They also have a lot of respect for the two of us so...

Did I miss her?

Footsteps suddenly come rushing towards me.

As I turn I feel myself get pushed back a little bit.

"About time you showed up dummy."

Sylvia’s voice is hard not to recognize.

"Man, I was worried for nothing."

"Why were you worried?" Sylvia asks curiously.

"I just didn’t see you on the wagons."

She laughs for a moment.

"It’s because I was more towards the front."

That makes a lot of sense. She probably blended in with some of the other slayers at the time. I’m really not used to being around so many different people.

Even after being here a few days... It takes some adjusting.

I’ll get there at some point or another.

"Are you two done?"

I slightly turn my head to see Laz behind us, holding back a laugh.

"Of course!" I shout.

"Haha. That is great. Let’s get going Kain."

"Right. I’m coming."

I look back at Sylvia.

"I’ll see you in a bit."

"Be careful Kain," Sylvia says with concern in her voice.

I catch up with Laz.

It takes a few minutes but we manage to get everything set up that we need. The cannons are hidden so no dragon will expect it in the slightest.

Tap. Tap.

I don’t look back but I can tell Laz is tapping my shoulder.

"What’s up?"

"I believe we are all done. We just need to get out of sight."

"No need to waste any time then."

I walk past him.

He follows behind me and we both find a spot out of sight. The others should be about done setting up as well.

The skies out here really are dark. I’m wondering if that’s an effect from the dragons flying around and using magic as heavy as they are.

Shit. I also didn’t find that Niko that Laz told me about.

He is the best way for me to get some answers about the dragon who uses strange magic... But I guess that’ll have to wait till after the attack.

Hours pass...

Nothing is really happening? I am starting to think that the dragons aren’t coming this way today.

I mean they must be cautious... This war has been going on for years. I’d think they would have adapted to the techniques of the slayers by now.

At least that is my thought process.

"They’ll be here soon."

Immediately I look over at Laz.

"How do you know?" I ask with a bit of confusion in my voice.

"This route is one they can’t avoid. Onyx has worked hard in finding this spot."

"He’s been tracking them?"

"Yes. We have to track them if we want to start turning the tides."

We have been on the losing side out here, at least according to what I saw on the boards.

I think I’ll definitely be able to make a difference out here somehow. This war has been raging on far longer than it should.

~Humans don’t want to lose, neither do the dragons.

It’ll be slaughter for one side if the other wins.

Not like they don’t deserve it.

Dragons haven’t been sparing humans so it doesn’t really matter to me. I want them to pay for everything they’ve done and continue to do to us.

So many lives lost for what?

A flash from the day Astien fell appears before my eyes.

I see the man with the long blonde hair, nice suit, and green eyes staring back at me.

"You know we weren’t always the enemy here kid," Xareth says.

The flash immediately disappears as I blink.

That is definitely a load of shit. I don’t believe a single thing from a dragon who was actively killing everyone in my village.

I just don’t understand the reason for him to say that. Especially when there was never a guarantee that I’d survive.

My eyes drift down to my hands where I stare at each scar.

The reminders are all over me. I’ll never be able to forget a single thing about that day... No matter how much time passes. I am cursed to keep moving forward.

I’m also not allowed to die. The Elder made that abundantly clear.

"Kain?"

I snap out of it.

"Yes, we need to turn the tides."

"I didn’t know if you heard me since you went quiet."

"I did. Sometimes I just like to think about the war and how we can end it."

Laz lets out a small laugh before keeping his voice down again.

"War will never be an easy thing to end, but I think we have a chance," Laz says with a hopeful tone.

"We’ll turn the tide against them."

"That is some confidence."

I go quiet as I start to hear the flapping of wings in the distance.

The dragons are finally here so there is no time to talk anymore. We just need to wait for the cannons to begin firing.

"When are we supposed to strike?" I ask quietly.

"Wait."

He moves towards the cannon.

I notice he is counting.

Four, five, six, BOOM!!!

He fires the cannon and I watch as the magic infused spear shoots towards the dragon with quite a bit of speed.

These spears really are insane but I didn’t think it would go that fast.

PIERCE!!!!!

It goes right through the left wing of the dragon flying above us. It looks like this one is wearing some kind of green armor but it didn’t protect the wings from the attack.

ROARRRRRR!!!!
