"Glad you two could make it," Onyx says with a serious tone.

I look around at the group that’s here, everyone from the previous ambush is here. It seems like this must be the usual team for taking care of these ambushes.

"Always happy to help," I reply.

After that we help with loading up the wagons once again, this time taking a few different weapons compared to before. Instead of just magic infused spears, we are also taking some sort of strange cannon balls.

They don’t look the same as the normal ones I saw previously.

"This ammunition is going to be how we stop the dragons at the crossroads."

I watch everyone’s reactions as they all observe the new rounds.

Most of them seem to be impressed by the upgrade but that’s when I notice the man from before. The one who first responded about the magic when I arrived.

I’m guessing that must be Niko... I will have to talk to him at some point soon. Right now isn’t the best time for it.

Hopefully this battle will go in our favor with no casualties.

Bump!

"Oh, Hey Kain. I had a feeling I’d be seeing you for this mission as well." Laz says after bumping into me.

"I wouldn’t miss an opportunity to help out in the war."

He laughs for a moment.

"I’d expect nothing less. Hopefully we can handle the dragons at the crossroads, my brother is at Aldion." Laz says with a bit of concern in his voice.

"We’ll take care of them Laz," I assure him.

I watch as he looks up with a smile back on his face.

"Of course. I’m not letting some dragons get to my family either way."

Family. Yeah I know all about what it is like to lose them so I’ll do my best to help keep Laz’s brother from dying. It isn’t easy going through any of that.

"Then let’s get a move on. I think everything is loaded."

"Right!" Laz shouts with a bit of excitement in his voice.

Must be his way of ignoring the potential thoughts that are bothering him. The fear of losing the people you care about.

I’d do the same thing.

After the conversation ends I climb into the wagon in front of me. Sylvia, Laz, and a few other slayers I don’t know are on this one with us.

The wagons are quite nice since they can hold quite a few slayers plus whatever weapons we need.

"Open the gates!" The guards shout.

I listen to the sounds of the old chains as the gate begins to lift. Everyone is staring towards us, but this is expected.

It is normal to be curious about those who head out into the battlefield. You never know if they are going to come back so it is good to see who is risking their lives.

The people of this fort all look at each other as heroes, even if fights occur in here. No one would hesitate to help if a dragon attacked here out of nowhere.

At least that is what I’ve observed over the last few days.

"Hey Kain, do you think it is going to be difficult?" Sylvia asks with a bit of curiosity.

"I don’t really know. If this would’ve been anywhere else, maybe I’d say that we can handle it ourselves. But out here it is different."

"It’ll be difficult, but we have plenty of strong slayers to assist," Laz chimes in.

Sylvia immediately looks towards Laz.

"You think that’ll be enough?" Sylvia questions.

Laz crosses his arms as he looks towards her.

"Of course. We’ve all been doing this for quite some time now. I don’t think we’re going to get destroyed by them now."

That confidence is something we need right now when lives are at risk. It is better than constantly worrying about what may or may not happen.

Dragons will prey on that weakness and tear us apart like we are nothing.

"I think that confidence is definitely what we need Laz."

"That is something I have to thank you for Kain."

"I haven’t done a thing man."

Both him and Sylvia laugh as we continue to head towards the crossroads. The conversation afterwards is pretty uneventful.

I listen as they all talk about what makes the crossroads special. It is one of the first places that we took back from the dragons, thanks to Onyx and some man named Orion.

It started to give me a better idea of the slayers around Mythos.

The strength that these men and women possess is something I need to earn. They’ve been doing this for years so I have a long way to go.

I’ll get there.

A lot has already opened my eyes since coming here, but this battle will be different. I won’t be charging in like a fool this time around.

Slayers have to adapt, just like the dragons have been doing with us. I won’t fall behind.

~What do you mean by that?

I will catch up to the bastard who killed everyone I loved. Xareth is the one dragon that I will kill myself no matter what.

He doesn’t get to avoid me... I don’t care how long it takes, he will die.

~That rage you hold for him will never go away, will it? I don’t think it is bad, but don’t let it lead to stupid decisions.

I won’t. There’s people who care about me, I can’t leave them behind.

The sound of the wheels creaking take me away from my thoughts as I realize we are stopping. A bunch of broken down buildings are now around the area.

Our wagons stopped right behind one of the bigger ones.

"Won’t they expect us if they notice the horses?" I question.

"We do hide the horses Kain. I think we’ll be okay," Laz answers with confidence.

"I trust you and everyone else that is here."

"Good. I don’t think there is a reason for you not to trust any of us."

I can hear heavy boots hitting against the ground as they begin to approach our wagon.

"Time for us to prepare!" Onyx shouts.
