Onyx takes a seat in front of me.
"With that out of the way, let’s discuss what’s coming."
"The next ambush?" I question.
"Exactly. Taking down that armored dragon was huge because we found out it was carrying a letter."
"I didn’t think dragons carried letters."
Onyx lets out a small laugh.
"That is the point. He was delivering it for someone."
A letter being delivered by an armored dragon is definitely quite interesting.
"What did the letter say?" I ask curiously.
"The dragons are planning a large scale attack on Fort Aldion. It is a fort that is north from us. They’ve been struggling with dragon attacks for the last two years."
I’m guessing we’ll need to set-up some ambush to take some of the attention away from Aldion. It does make a lot of sense to try to draw it when they are struggling.
"So that’s where we come into play then."
"Yes. I’m glad you are catching on quickly."
He pulls the table over and lays down the map.
"This is fort Mythos here, ahead along the road here is Fort Aldion. We will be setting up a nice ambush right here in the crossroads between the two forts."
I’m starting to understand why he is the right person to plan all of these ambushes. He really does seem to understand the best places to set-up.
I don’t know if it’ll actually go the way we want it to, but Aldion needs our help.
"How open is this crossroads?" I ask with a curious tone.
"It isn’t that open at all. There are a few old broken down buildings that we can use to hide the cannons."
"That definitely could work."
"I’d hope so. Aldion can’t afford to take a full on attack again."
"I’m ready."
He stands up.
"Great. Eat something first, then meet me over by the barracks," Onyx says with a genuine tone.
I didn’t even really think much about eating today. It probably would be a good idea.
That is what Sylvia went to get earlier, food. I was pretty positive that she’d be bringing some back for me as well.
"I’ll make sure to eat something," I assure him.
"Alright. I’ll see you in a bit."
He leaves the tent.
I stand up slowly and I can just barely feel some of the pain in my stomach from before. It is mostly healed but I guess this is the best they could do.
Step. Step. Step.
"Oh, you’re standing already."
I look back to the entrance to see Sylvia is standing there with two plates in her hands.
"Yeah, I had quite an eventful conversation."
"With Onyx?" Sylvia questions with curiosity in her voice.
"Yes. He mentioned that we are going to be setting up another ambush because of Aldion."
She sits the plates down on the table where the map was before.
"We can focus more on that after some food."
I sit back down and look down at the food before me.
Rice, chicken, and some vegetables mixed in.
"Thank you for bringing back food for the two of us," I say with a genuine tone.
"No need to thank me dummy. We both need to eat, just the line was crazy long."
Makes sense when we live in a fort full of slayers, soldiers, and whatever adventurer comes through to help. I wouldn’t expect any less.
"Worked out that it was. Laz also stopped by."
"Oh, what did he have to say?" Sylvia questions as she begins to eat.
"Just wanted to thank me and told me I didn’t have to take the hit for him."
Sylvia chuckles lightly.
"What?"
"I just think it is funny that you might’ve found someone similar to you."
"I barely know Laz."
"But you both have a pretty similar way of thinking. I talked to him earlier."
I don’t think our way of thinking is similar in the slightest but I’ll just agree for now. It isn’t really something to argue about anyway when she is just saying something nice.
Laz is a pretty nice guy. I hope that we’ll get to fight alongside each other more.
We talk for a bit as we eat, mostly about how living here is so far. We have been able to sleep in the same bed together which is kind of nice.
I think we have definitely gotten a lot closer since arriving here.
But we finally finish our meal.
"Shall we get going?" Sylvia asks with a bit of excitement.
"You’re still excited to go back out there?"
"Of course. We are slayers, this is what we live for."
She isn’t wrong. Slayers exist to kill dragons, save people, and keep kingdoms from burning down. At least that’s how I view it.
~Slayers don’t necessarily have a responsibility to keep kingdoms afloat.
It would just be dumb not to protect them. They provide a lot of different things to us and the people around us.
Very similar to how Astien raised me. Some people are raised within these kingdoms... I wouldn’t want them to go through the same hell that I did.
~Then you really do need strength.
I can work on that, but I also have to be careful with the dragons out here. It is a whole different level than what I’m used to. I’ll have to take the time to adjust to more battles before moving forward.
Dragon essence will always be around as long as dragons exist anyway.
The system doesn’t say anything else after that.
I help Sylvia clean up the plates before disposing of them. It is very lively outside of the tent too.
People are all walking around and chatting about various things. Some about dragons, getting away from here some day, and even those who want to start a new life.
Everyone is here for a reason. I hope they’ll be able to get what they want.
I know it’ll be a long time before I do.
