Maybe magic is a little more important than I thought.

~You are finally starting to realize that.

Yes.

~That is good. Sign of improvement.

I know.

~Just making sure.

I ignore the system as I realize Niko starts to walk away.

This might be my only chance before the chaos begins... But is it really worth asking right now?

Ahhh. Damnit.

"Hey."

He stops.

"Yeah?"

"Laz said you’ve seen dragons use strange magic."

Niko’s expression changes slightly. Almost like he is a bit curious about where this is going.

"Strange how?"

"That’s what I wanted to ask you."

He studies me for a moment.

"Why?"

I hesitate.

I don’t really want to explain the visions in the middle of a battlefield.

Especially to someone I barely know.

"I’ve seen something before."

Maybe I can just give something that is enough to find answers.

"What?"

"Black flames."

Niko goes quiet.

That definitely doesn’t feel like a good reaction to get to black flames.

"You’ve seen black flames?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

I look around.

"Can we talk about this after?"

His eyes remain on me.

"Definitely."

Something about the way he says that makes my stomach twist.

At least I know that he definitely has some sort of information. Whether it’ll be helpful or not is a whole different story.

"Kain!" Sylvia calls out from the other side of the building.

I look towards her and she gestures for me to come over.

"I’ll find you after this," I tell Niko.

"Make sure you do."

I walk away.

That conversation definitely didn’t help my thoughts.

Black flames... He recognized them.

That means whatever I’m seeing isn’t something completely random.

I need answers, but it’ll have to wait. Aldion comes before anything else.

Within a few moments I reach Sylvia.

She hands me a small piece of cloth.

"What’s this?"

"Wrap it around your sword handle."

"Why?"

"Grip."

I look at it.

"My grip is fine."

"Your hands are sweaty."

I look down and realize that she’s right.

It is something I didn’t even notice myself.

"Fine."

I wrap it around the handle.

It does feel better.

"Thanks."

"Of course."

Laz walks over carrying two short spears.

"These are for emergencies."

He hands one to Sylvia.

Then one to me.

I look at it.

"What kind of emergency?"

"Dragon gets too close and you lose your sword."

"That sounds pretty specific."

"It happens."

Of course it does.

I put a special holder onto my back and then put the spear on it.

Onyx walks back towards the center.

"Everyone listen up!"

The area goes quiet again.

"We don’t know if the letter was delayed. We don’t know if their numbers changed. We don’t know if they know the armored dragon died."

Great. That definitely sounds like some good news...

"So assume everything can go wrong."

"Our goal is not to kill every dragon here."

Interesting. I thought our goal would be to kill all the dragons that come to the crossroads. This changes my perspective on things quite a bit.

I understand it surprisingly.

"Our goal is to weaken the group heading towards Aldion. Break their formation. Injure as many as possible. Kill whatever we safely can."

Safely. Definitely feels a bit more targeted, but I don’t think it actually is. Probably just a way to get everyone to understand that we don’t need to take unnecessary risks.

Laz might’ve needed to hear that too with his brother being at Aldion.

"If they retreat, let them retreat unless I say otherwise."

The thought of letting them go really doesn’t sit right with me, but I do understand it. I wouldn’t want to risk running into a trap because I let my anger get the best of me.

Or my greed.

"Nobody plays hero."

Onyx looks around.

His eyes land on me for a second.

I know exactly who that was for.

Laz tries not to laugh.

I elbow him lightly.

"That includes all of you," Onyx continues. "You see someone in trouble, help them if you can. Don’t sacrifice the whole group for one person."

He really is bothered by how I went about things at the last ambush. He didn’t show it much at the tent... Then again, this might be an example he’s using for the group.

"We return with as many people as we leave with."

Everyone nods.

A goal that we can all agree on.

Onyx looks towards the sky.

"We’ve got a few hours."

Hours... That means waiting. Not the best thing in the world but patience is important.

But originally I thought fighting dragons would involve a lot more fighting and a lot less sitting around.

We spend the next hour checking equipment.

Then checking it again.

The cannons are loaded, detection stones are placed, and slayers move into their positions.

Horses are taken deeper into the ruins and hidden beneath what remains of an old stable.

And finally everything starts going quiet.

I sit behind a broken wall with Sylvia and Laz.

There are three other slayers close by.

Nobody talks loudly.

The sun slowly begins dropping and shadows stretch across the crossroads.

I stare towards the road.

It really is absolutely silent out here. Not a single thing in sight either. I really don’t know how everyone is able to handle this.

Am I really that impatient? I have a lot to learn.

Sylvia sits beside me.

"You okay?"

"Yeah."

"You’ve been quiet."

"Just thinking."

"About the fight?"

"That and Niko."

She looks towards me.

"You finally talked to him?"

"Briefly."

"And?"

"He knows something about the black flames."

Her expression becomes serious instantly.

"He does?"

"I think so."

"What did he say?"

"Nothing yet. We’re talking after."

Sylvia looks towards the road again.

"At least that’s something."

"Yeah."

It definitely is.

For the first time since the visions started, I might actually have someone who knows what I’m seeing.

I should feel relieved but it just makes me a lot more nervous instead... Because that means that they actually exist. That I am not just seeing something or that it is made up.

All of the visions are real. That is the worst realization to come to....

The thought of that dragon existing... And everything being burned down is not sitting right. I’m starting to get pissed off.

I tighten my grip around my sword.

Sylvia notices.

Her hand rests lightly against mine.

"Focus on what’s here."

I look towards her.

She’s right. I can worry about it later.

The fight is here. Everything else is happening in the future or at least that’s what I can imagine.

There is still no telling when it is going to happen which is my biggest concern... But again, I’ll focus on the important fight at hand.

Aldion is the priority right now.

"I know."

She removes her hand slowly.

Laz leans closer.

"Not to interrupt whatever that was, but I think we’re about to have company."

I look towards him.

He points towards one of the detection stones.

A faint blue glow is starting to appear.

My body immediately becomes tense as another stone further down the road lights up.

Then another.

One by one.

Blue lights stretch towards us through the crossroads.

Seems like the dragons are finally making their way here. This is definitely going to be interesting.

Onyx raises one hand from his position.

Everyone goes completely still.

No talking, no unnecessary movement.

I control my breathing.

My heartbeat slowly becomes louder.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

The sky above the broken buildings grows darker.

At first I think it is just the sun disappearing but then I hear it.

FLAP. FLAP. FLAP.

Multiple sets of wings.

Laz grips his weapon.

Sylvia draws her sword slowly.

I do the same.

No rushing or stupid decisions this time, just follow the plan.

The first silhouette appears above the road.

Then another and then three more behind them.

Five.

Exactly what the letter said. At least we know it is accurate.

No telling how strong they are about to be, not to me at least. My mind is all over the place after the last battle we had against the armored dragon.

One of them is much larger than the others.

Armor covers most of its body while another has flames leaking between its teeth.

The third keeps moving its head from side to side.

Probably the tracker that was mentioned earlier.

I lower myself behind the wall.

Onyx keeps his hand raised.

Nobody fires yet.

The dragons continue moving towards the center of the crossroads.

Closer.

Closer.

Closer.

The detection stones glow brighter.

I can hear the beating of wings directly above us now.

For the first time in a long time, I think I actually can feel a bit of fear. This is nothing like what I’ve been going through with Sylvia or even before that.

This is the real war that I was told all about by the slayers around me.

Onyx’s hand drops.
