Slime True Immortal

Chapter 421: Demonic Galvin

In the Knight Alliance grounds of Darkness City.

Anna, wearing light armor, jogged through the corridor. She stopped in front of the oak door at the end, caught her breath, pushed it open, and poked her head in.

“Teacher, I’m back.”

Galvin, who was on the training ground putting his bow back on the weapon rack, turned around at the sound of Anna’s voice. He asked in a flat tone, “What is it?”

Anna had long grown used to his temperament. Facing this taciturn man no longer stirred the fear she once felt.

Instead, she clasped her hands behind her back, a smile she couldn’t hide spreading across her face. “Have you seen His Majesty’s Frontier Development Decree? The Border Corps needs to select a group of knights to enter the Astral Realm. The quotas have already been distributed to the various knight orders.”

“Teacher, how about we go too?”

“No.” Galvin’s reply was crisp and decisive, without a hint of hesitation.

Anna wasn’t surprised, but instead of dropping it as she usually would, she took a few steps forward and lowered her voice. “Are you still bothered by Sir Arthur’s promotion to Level Twelve?”

“Maintain it well. I’ll inspect it tomorrow.”

With that, he turned and left the training ground.

Anna instinctively caught the sword and hurried after him. “But I heard that His Majesty plans to select a group of knights as future Legendary seeds.”

“Those knights will train like the slimes, studying those Arcane Arts scrolls, permanently stationed in the demiplane and Astral Realm. Teacher, aren’t you really interested?”

Galvin stopped, turned around, and frowned slightly. “Didn’t His Majesty say we lack the pills needed to cultivate those Arcane Arts?”

Anna thought for a moment, trying to recall the tidbits she’d overheard in the corridors. “Well, I heard it’s about practicing the same martial arts secret scriptures as Sir Yano. It doesn’t seem to need pills. It requires some kind of talent or aptitude. I can’t explain it clearly, but that’s what the decree says.”

Galvin was silent for a moment, then spoke. “Where is His Majesty’s decree? I want to see it with my own eyes.”

Anna’s face immediately lit up with a smile. “Lady Alice was just hoping I’d show it to you.”

She quickly pulled a neatly folded piece of parchment from the leather pouch at her waist and handed it to Galvin.

Galvin took the parchment and unfolded it. His eyes swept from the first line to the last, then stopped on a passage in the middle. He murmured, “Great Dao Knight?”

Anna nodded, her voice tinged with the same excitement she’d felt when she first saw those words. “Exactly. That’s what they’re saying over at the Knight Alliance and the Guild. I heard that if you can comprehend some kind of Great Dao, you have a chance to become a professional as powerful as a Legendary.”

“No mana, no spells. Purely through understanding martial arts and yourself, you can reach that level.”

Galvin’s eyes didn’t leave the parchment. “There’s no level restriction here?”

“No.” Anna shook her head. “Any knight in the Border Corps can participate, even probationary knights. It all depends on aptitude.”

“His Majesty issued a Dao scripture. If you can comprehend the content within, you’re considered talented and can become a Legendary seed.”

Her voice suddenly dropped a few notches. “But even the Deputy Army Commander tried it.”

Galvin caught the hesitation in her tone. “Raven tried it too? What was the result?”

Anna carefully glanced at him before saying, “He… he didn’t pass. But Sister Alice did.”

Galvin’s frown deepened.

This result was stranger than he’d expected.

Raven, the head of the Arevalo family, the current Deputy Army Commander of the Border Corps, the man who had single-handedly fought the legion’s traitors during the Storm Fortress battle—he hadn’t passed.

But Arthur’s sister, an Elite Professional who wasn’t even a Frost Wolf Knight, had passed.

“Teacher, do you want to give it a try?” Anna asked.

Galvin folded the parchment in his hand and was silent for a moment.

He had originally planned to say no.

He had no desire for the Astral Realm and no interest in those abstruse Great Daos.

But those five words—“Alice passed”—had lodged a thorn in his heart.

His pride would not allow him to lose to anyone other than Arthur. Since Arthur’s sister could pass, then he certainly could too.

“Let’s go,” he said flatly, tucking the parchment into his robe and striding out the door.

...

Slime City Palace.

Chen Yu squatted on his throne, listening to the tedious morning meeting, yawning repeatedly.

The slime scholars from the decision-making council were reporting on adjustments to the Astral Realm Frontier Corps formation. Little Flower sat beside him, listening intently, occasionally jotting down notes with her quill and then looking up to confirm his opinions.

Once the Frontier Corps’ formation was finally settled, Chen Yu suddenly grew curious whether those Dao scriptures he’d distributed a few days ago had screened out any Legendary seeds for him.

Though he called them Dao scriptures, they were actually books he’d made by imprinting the Dao resonance of various Great Daos onto the pages.

Any professional who opened the book and could comprehend something from it was considered to have the talent to perceive the Great Dao.

Due to the limited number of his avatars, he could only send out ten gel avatars as Fake Cores to help these professionals enter the Fake Core realm and thereby touch the Great Dao.

If even one of these ten could truly comprehend the Great Dao through the Fake Core realm, it would be a net gain for the Empire.

To be honest, the Legendary seed selection for the Magical Creature Legion had started earlier than the Border Corps, but the harvest was meager. He couldn’t even scrape together five magical creatures.

Of the four selected, aside from Big Brother Slime and Little Flower, the remaining two were Slime Mages he’d pulled from the academy.

Only Big Brother Slime among the Slime Knights had passed the test.

But this was very much in line with the slimes’ racial traits. Slimes naturally had low intelligence attributes, and the gap between them and elves or humans was stark.

Most slimes learned quickly thanks to Spirit Awakening Pills. During the intelligence-awakening stage, they could learn anything fast, but afterward, they settled into normal human levels.

However, slimes had their own advantage—they were simpler in mind. As long as they reached a certain intelligence threshold, perceiving the Great Dao was actually easier for them than for humans.

But that was all beside the point.

Since enough Legendary seeds couldn’t be screened from magical creatures, he placed his hopes on humans, elves, dwarves, and demi-humans.

He had allocated five slots each to the Knight Corps and the major academies.

Calculating the time, preliminary results should be available now.

“Little Flower, are the results of the Legendary seed selection in?”

Hearing his question, Little Flower put down her quill, rummaged through the stack of documents in front of her, pulled out two lists, and handed them to Chen Yu. She spoke at the same time, “The academy’s five slots are all filled, and there are even extras.”

Chen Yu glanced over the list.

Although he had only given the academies five slots, eight mages had qualified.

Among them were three elves and five humans.

All the names on the list were familiar to him.

Selene, Alders… the three elven candidates were all from the Forest Sage Council.

He only then remembered that the Sages were also teaching at the academies, so naturally, they could participate in the selection.

Selene was carrying out the plan to infiltrate the Ancient Tree Council, but returning to the Empire once wasn’t too much trouble, and participating in the selection was normal.

What surprised him was that, despite the small number of elven citizens in the Empire, elves still took three of the spots.

The Forest Sage Council was still too authoritative when it came to academics.

As for the humans, most were from the Rima Kingdom and the Merchant Alliance. There were two court mages, and the rest were Mage Apprentices.

Little Flower looked at him with some hesitation. “Brother, there are only five slots. What should we do?”

Chen Yu waved his gel hand grandly. “Approve them all. It’s just three more avatars. It’s not like I don’t have any.”

He continued flipping through the next list and was surprised to find that all five slots for the Knight Corps were filled. That was somewhat unexpected.

Even more surprising, the names on the list were all young knights.

For example, Arthur’s sister Alice, Galvin’s student Anna, and three other names he’d never heard of, all probationary knights.

Raven and Galvin were not among them.

He confirmed with Little Flower, and she shook her head to indicate they weren’t.

Strange.

Did older knights just have less comprehension ability?

He could already imagine the expression on Galvin’s face when he failed the test.

“Should I ask the Knight Corps about the situation now?” Little Flower suggested.

Chen Yu agreed.

He found it strange too.

Raven failing could be explained by him being an Extraordinary professional who rose through seniority and age, but Galvin was different.

In his memory, Galvin’s knight aptitude was much higher than Yano’s, just slightly below Arthur’s. There was no reason for him to fail.

Little Flower lowered her head and communicated with the distant location through the Gel Network.

After a long moment, she looked up and relayed to Chen Yu, “The Knight Corps says that Sir Raven had no reaction to the Dao scripture.”

“As for Sir Galvin… not only did he have no reaction, but he also angrily flipped the Dao scripture over. He’s now holed up in the Meditation Room in the Knight Alliance grounds, saying he’s in reflection.”

Chen Yu’s first reaction was that this didn’t seem all that wrong.

With Galvin’s stubborn and proud nature, flipping a book was exactly something he’d do.

But upon second thought, he felt something was off.

Though stubborn and proud, Galvin had always been steady, even more reliable than Arthur, who often had a brain freeze.

He wouldn’t flip a book in public just because he failed a test.

Due to the limited number of his clones, he could only send out ten gel clones as Fake Cores to help these professionals enter the Fake Core realm and thereby touch the Great Dao.

“Little Flower, end the morning meeting. I’m going to Darkness City for a look.” Without waiting for her to speak, he slipped away, turning into a streak of green light that shot out of the Royal Palace and streaked southward.

As he pierced through the Black Cloud over the Dark Realm, the familiar city outline of Darkness City soon came into view.

He was about to descend when he was suddenly drawn to a strange aura coming from the Knight Alliance grounds.

There, a dense black mist was gathering above the Knight Alliance, coalescing into twisted, distorted faces. The sight was utterly horrifying.

Such a thick aura of the Demonic Dao.

Wait, where did a Demonic Dao come from in Zeyarila?

His Divine Sense swept along that aura, locking onto its source.

It was Galvin.

Many knights had already gathered around the Meditation Room door, warily watching the black mist seeping out from the doorway.

Chen Yu descended from the sky.

A streak of green sword light condensed in the courtyard of the Knight Alliance, revealing a green figure wearing the crown.

The knights gathered around the Meditation Room door visibly relaxed when they saw him land.

“Greetings, Your Majesty.”

Several young knights released their hands from their sword hilts and stepped back to clear a path for him.

Anna quickly approached. “Your Majesty, after the test two days ago, Teacher shut himself in the Meditation Room and said not to disturb him.”

“Just now, this strange black mist started pouring out from inside. Purification spells couldn’t suppress it either.”

She pointed to the roiling fog at the door. The black mist seeped through the crack like a living creature, then slowly retreated when it touched the outside air, as if something sentient was pacing behind the door.

A few slime priests were crouched on either side of the doorway, the tips of their staffs glowing with a holy white light.

They alternated casting purification spells. Each time the Holy Light struck the black mist, it suppressed a small patch, but within moments, the mist stubbornly crept back out from the crack.

Chen Yu glanced at the black mist, then sensed the aura behind the door. He turned to face the tense-looking knights and reassured them, “Don’t worry. Galvin is fine.”

He wasn’t lying.

Galvin really was fine. He had just suffered a Qi Deviation.

In Xu Xuan Heaven, a cultivator’s Qi Deviation could mean anything from a minor realm regression to complete annihilation of body and Dao.

But in the eyes of Xu Xuan Heaven’s cultivators, Galvin wasn’t even a cultivator. He had no realm at all. He was just an extraordinarily strong mortal.

With no realm to regress from, talk of death was even more out of the question.

This mild Qi Deviation would probably clear up on its own in a few days once Galvin thought things through.

But the question was, why had he suffered Qi Deviation?

Chen Yu recalled that Galvin shouldn’t have been exposed to any Xu Xuan Heaven techniques.

Could he have been so angry from failing the test that it triggered Qi Deviation?

No, it couldn’t be that simple.

Zeyarila didn’t even have the concept of Qi Deviation.

When a mage’s mana went out of control here, at worst, it was mana backlash, which had completely different symptoms from Qi Deviation.

To trigger Qi Deviation, a prerequisite was necessary—having been exposed to the power system of Xu Xuan Heaven and going awry during training or comprehension.

Unless he had come into contact with something from Xu Xuan Heaven.

Wait. Was it that Dao scripture?

He understood now.

Only the Dao resonance imprinted on the pages could have caused Galvin’s Qi Deviation.

He had only been exposed to the Dao resonance, yet he had reached this point in just two days.

This situation was too rare. Even Chen Yu couldn’t immediately determine what was going on.

He needed to return to Xu Xuan Heaven and check the relevant records.

“Keep watch here. I’ll be back soon.” Chen Yu hopped onto a nearby stone chair, closed his eyes, and let his consciousness sink, returning to Xu Xuan Heaven.

In the quiet room of Guanshan Dojo, he flipped through several texts on the symptoms and causes of Qi Deviation. He also consulted the elders there before letting his consciousness return to Zeyerra.

He opened his eyes.

The knights were still gathered around the door. Anna, seeing him open his eyes, asked nervously, “Your Majesty, how is it?”

Chen Yu was silent for a moment, a strange expression flickering across his face.

This problem was neither big nor small.

In short, Galvin had become a Demonic Cultivator.

There were only two possibilities for suffering Qi Deviation after being exposed to Dao resonance.

One was a misunderstanding of the Great Dao, a deviation in the direction of perception. This was common among cultivators with unstable foundations who were too eager for results.

Chen Yu waved his gel hand grandly. “Approve them all. It’s just three more clones. It’s not like I don’t have any.”

It meant that he already possessed his own Great Dao. When it came into contact with the Dao resonance, a conflict arose, triggering Qi Deviation.

He leaned toward the second possibility.

The humans of Zeyarila hadn’t even fully understood what the Great Dao was. How could they misinterpret it?

The most likely scenario was that the knight’s path Galvin had steadfastly adhered to was triggered the moment he came into contact with the Dao resonance, manifesting as his own Great Dao.

His knight’s path differed from the Great Dao in the scripture, hence the Qi Deviation.

He had to remember that the Daos he had imprinted were all from righteous, orthodox schools. Even the Embryonic Yuan Slime Dao followed a balanced, gentle path.

Anything that could conflict with his Daos could only be the Demonic Dao.

The very creed and obsession that Galvin had held fast to had manifested as the Demonic Dao.

Chen Yu shook his head.

That’s why you can’t be too single-minded in life.
