"Damn it all."
Evenson watched the Hulk sprint after the crashing helicopter with the hollow despair of a Mythic dungeon run where the tank rage-quit before the first pull.
Unbelievable.
Fine.
When this was over, he’d personally make sure Natasha found someone other than Banner. Let the big green idiot spend the rest of his life single.
He turned toward the Abomination, who remained where he was.
"Aren’t you going after him?"
The monster let out a rumbling chuckle.
"No. Before the main course..." he growled, "you enjoy the appetizer."
Without hesitation, he classified Evenson as another enhanced human.
Despite the arrogance in his tone, he wasn’t careless.
That unseen curse from moments ago had hurt far more than he wanted to admit. Worse, he still had no idea how it had been cast.
Before becoming the Abomination, Emil Blonsky had been one of the military’s finest soldiers under General Ross. He’d encountered enhanced individuals before and had personally killed several of them.
Those people had been straightforward.
One ability.
One fighting style.
Simple.
This...
This "wizard" was something else entirely.
First came strange beasts he’d never seen before, pinning him down.
Then a layered barrage of magical attacks.
Those were dangerous, but understandable. He could see them coming.
Even if he couldn’t dodge them, at least he knew what had hit him.
But that last attack...
The curse had appeared from nowhere.
No warning.
No visible projectile.
No trace.
One moment he was fighting.
The next, agony had erupted inside his own body.
Could this man actually be some kind of sorcerer?
It didn’t matter.
Kill him first.
Then hunt the Hulk.
Otherwise he’d spend the entire fight getting stabbed in the back by invisible magic.
"Now it’s just you and me," the Abomination declared, rolling his shoulders. "Prepare to die... mutant."
He charged.
The strategy was brutally simple.
No matter how strange Evenson’s abilities were, if they couldn’t kill him instantly, one punch at close range would.
It was the eternal battle cry of every warrior charging a spellcaster.
Evenson merely clicked his tongue.
The corpses of the fallen Dread Hounds and Imps instantly dissolved into drifting ash.
Their remaining demonic essence gathered around his outstretched hand.
Demonbolt.
A spell forged from the lingering energy of slain demons, combining Shadow and Fire into a single devastating projectile.
The violet-black missile streaked toward the charging Abomination.
"Hmph."
Without slowing, the Abomination threw a punch.
His fist struck the spell head-on, knocking it off course.
The Demonbolt slammed into an abandoned sedan instead.
The vehicle didn’t explode.
It simply disintegrated into gray dust.
The Abomination leaped.
Hands clasped together above his head.
He intended to crush Evenson flat.
Evenson didn’t move.
He planted his staff before him.
A shimmering barrier materialized.
Void Barrier.
BOOM!
The Abomination crashed onto the shield.
Cracks spread across the magical defense like fractures in glass.
Even Evenson’s strongest protective spell strained beneath the monster’s overwhelming strength.
Before the barrier collapsed completely, Evenson slammed the butt of his staff into the pavement.
Above him appeared the spectral head of a Pit Lord.
Its jaws opened.
Dark violet hellfire poured out in a roaring torrent, engulfing the Abomination completely.
By the time the monster burst free of the inferno...
Evenson was already gone.
A prepared Demonic Circle carried him dozens of yards away.
"Damn you!"
Forced to close the distance all over again, the Abomination charged once more.
"Die, insect!"
He had barely taken a few strides when a crimson blur intercepted him from the side.
"RAAAAGH!"
Blood sprayed through the air.
The surprise attack carved a half-meter gash across his ribs.
Green blood poured from the wound.
The force of the strike brought his charge to a dead stop.
Clutching his side, the Abomination looked up at his attacker.
Red eyes.
Black skin.
Heavy crimson armor.
A single horn rising from his forehead.
Bone blades jutting from his back.
And in his hands...
A massive double-bladed axe taller than a man.
Green blood dripped steadily from its edge.
His own blood.
Taylor.
Evenson’s strongest demon.
The Felguard had obeyed orders and remained hidden throughout the battle. The moment the Hulk left, Evenson had finally released him.
Taylor had been waiting for exactly this opportunity.
Battle fever burned through every inch of him.
He had never been happier.
"Hold him, Taylor!" Evenson shouted.
He knew the truth.
Taylor was his strongest servant, but he still wasn’t powerful enough to defeat the Abomination alone.
Buying time was enough.
Evenson drove his staff into the ground.
One curse after another rolled off his tongue.
Agony.
Corruption.
Unstable Affliction.
Curse of Weakness.
Each spell alone could kill an ordinary human.
Together, they wrapped around the Abomination like invisible chains.
Pain gnawed at his body.
Corruption spread beneath his skin.
Exhaustion seeped into his muscles.
Even his thoughts became sluggish.
For the first time since his transformation, the Abomination’s movements noticeably slowed.
Taylor wasted no time.
"To kill... or be killed."
"That is the Legion’s way!"
The old battlefield cry thundered from his throat as he charged with his colossal axe.
Honor?
Fair play?
Mercy?
Those concepts had never existed in a Felguard’s vocabulary.
Under the weight of Taylor’s relentless assault and Evenson’s crippling curses, even the Abomination was forced backward.
Meanwhile, Evenson spread his arms.
Purple streams of light drifted toward him from every direction.
It was a massive-scale Drain Soul.
The Hulk and the Abomination had been tearing through the city long before Evenson arrived.
Buildings had collapsed.
Vehicles had been crushed.
People had died.
Far too many.
Rather than letting those newly departed souls fade into nothingness... or pass on burdened by terror and resentment...
Evenson harvested them.
At least now they could help destroy the monster responsible for their deaths.
See? he thought with complete sincerity. I’m practically charitable.
When the last violet light disappeared, numerous Soul Shards floated in his hand.
He selected one.
With a squeeze, it transformed into a glowing crimson stone.
A Firestone.
He shattered it against the head of his staff.
The skull adorning the weapon ignited.
Its empty eye sockets and gaping jaws blazed with brilliant fire.
The enchantment flooded the staff with destructive energy.
His fire magic surged.
Enough preparation.
Time to stop playing defensively.
Evenson raised his staff.
"Immolate!"
Flames erupted across the Abomination’s body.
