The Abomination had already appeared on television countless times. Reporters had captured every angle during the battle.

Unfortunately, Evenson had been too busy grinning at his latest paycheck to pay any attention.

This was the first time he had actually gotten a good look at the creature.

Something was wrong.

Thin green markings crisscrossed the Abomination’s body. Against his already green skin they should have been nearly invisible, yet they emitted a faint emerald glow that stood out clearly beneath the night sky.

Blade-like bone spikes jutted from both shoulders.

A thick, reptilian tail lashed behind him.

Most striking of all was the enormous horn protruding from his forehead.

For a split second, Evenson had honestly mistaken him for some new breed of demon.

His curiosity quickly turned to alarm.

Closing his eyes for an instant, Evenson carefully sensed the energy radiating from the monster buried in the shattered wall.

His expression darkened.

"...You lunatic."

Then he shouted toward the Abomination.

"You didn’t just wreck my car."

"You stole my power."

The presence was faint.

Almost imperceptible.

But it was unmistakable.

Fel energy.

His fel energy.

Only after a moment of thought did the pieces finally fall into place.

There was no possibility that this power had originated anywhere else.

As far as Evenson knew, he was the only Warlock in this universe.

More importantly, the fel energy lingering inside the Abomination still carried his personal magical signature.

Long ago, Evenson had placed a safeguard upon the Pit Lord’s blood he used to create the Fel-enhanced soldiers.

The enchantment ensured that once a host died, the fel energy inside the corpse rapidly decayed. Blood separated from the body lost its potency even faster.

It was designed specifically to keep fel corruption from spreading uncontrollably.

Which meant there was only one explanation.

Every Fel-enhanced soldier, both the five Evenson had created and the twenty produced through Horwyst’s organization, had fought American forces before being killed.

General Ross had undoubtedly recovered biological samples.

That much was inevitable.

But Evenson was equally certain Ross had never deciphered the secret of fel energy itself.

The protective enchantment guaranteed that.

The general probably never even realized it existed.

So what had happened?

Ross had simply injected contaminated blood directly into Emil Blonsky while he was still human.

The moment the blood entered a living body, the fel energy stopped decaying.

Fortunately, enough time had passed that its concentration had already fallen to extremely low levels, preventing Blonsky from mutating into one of the original Fel-enhanced soldiers.

Then Hulk’s blood entered the equation.

The gamma-infused blood had acted like a catalyst.

Rather than granting Blonsky significant additional fel power, it had amplified the physical mutations instead.

That explained the glowing markings.

The horn.

The tail.

The spikes.

Ross had taken an unknown supernatural substance, failed to understand it completely, and injected it into his most trusted soldier anyway.

No wonder Evenson had called him insane.

At this point, Ross looked more like a comic book supervillain than the Warlock did.

And just like that...

Evenson found himself with another reason to kill the Abomination.

Someone who had surrendered completely to the pursuit of power had no right to wield even a fragment of fel energy.

Not one drop.

The Hulk crashed into the street again after another brutal throw.

Thanks to the traces of fel corruption strengthening his already monstrous physique, the Abomination now possessed a slight edge in raw strength.

This time, instead of chasing the Hulk, he turned toward Evenson.

Instinct warned him that the strangely dressed man was dangerous.

Evenson raised both hands.

"Not making the first move?"

"My turn."

Two black portals tore open beside him.

Two Dread Hounds exploded from the swirling darkness, lunging straight for the Abomination.

As the monster struggled to rip the beasts from his body, another attack arrived.

A sphere of condensed Shadow suddenly materialized high overhead before crashing directly into his skull.

The explosion was unlike ordinary fire.

No flames.

Only a violent wave of pure shadow that rippled outward.

Anything touched by the blast wasn’t thrown away.

Instead, the Shadow magic devoured and corroded everything in its path.

The instant the explosion faded, four creatures no larger than monkeys appeared within the smoke.

Imps.

Their tiny feet burned with fel fire as they shrieked excitedly, hurling flaming bolts the size of human heads toward the Abomination.

Hand of Gul’dan.

One of the signature techniques of the first Orc Warlock.

The spell had always been infamous for layering multiple attacks together.

Legends claimed Gul’dan had once used it to create an active volcano that spewed fel magma for decades.

Each Firebolt launched by an Imp struck with the force of a high-explosive grenade.

Under the relentless bombardment, the Abomination disappeared behind fire, smoke, and collapsing concrete.

Then...

A roar erupted from within the inferno.

The Abomination burst through the smoke.

Large patches of his body had turned black, but not from burns.

The Imps hadn’t managed to injure him.

They had merely coated him in soot.

After all, this was a creature capable of shrugging off anti-tank rockets.

Imp Firebolts weren’t enough.

With one hand he seized a Dread Hound.

With the other, the second.

He swung them like enormous flails.

The Imps never had a chance.

Their fragile bodies shattered beneath the impact.

Tiny screams echoed through the battlefield before they dissolved into ash.

The Abomination threw the limp Dread Hounds aside.

At last, he fixed his eyes on Evenson.

"You’re next."

Before he could take a single step...

"RAAAAGH!"

Dark energy suddenly erupted from inside his body.

The unexpected surge ripped through him like an internal explosion.

The Abomination staggered violently before dropping to one knee, clutching himself in agony.

Doom.

For an experienced Warlock, weaving the curse into Hand of Gul’dan was second nature.

The devastating hex had finally triggered.

Misfortune rarely traveled alone.

As the curse ravaged the Abomination from within, the Hulk charged back into the fight.

This time, however, the battle looked different.

The Abomination could no longer brush him aside in a few effortless exchanges.

Doom had clearly inflicted far more damage than it first appeared.

"Support him!"

A military helicopter swept overhead.

General Ross stood inside alongside Betty Ross.

The instant he assessed the battlefield, he barked an order to the door gunner.

"Open fire!"

For all his arrogance and obsession, Ross still understood one thing.

Blonsky was beyond saving.

If left alive, he would become a catastrophe.

The helicopter’s minigun spun to life.

Thousands of rounds poured toward the Abomination.

The monster looked up.

"ROOOOSS!"

With a furious punch he knocked the Hulk backward, ripped a car door from a wreck beside him, and hurled it like a discus.

The spinning slab of steel smashed into the helicopter’s tail rotor.

The aircraft immediately lurched sideways.

Smoke poured from the damaged tail as it spiraled helplessly toward the city below.

The Hulk looked up.

Saw Betty aboard.

Without a second’s hesitation, he abandoned the fight and sprinted after the falling helicopter.

"Wait... damn it!"

Evenson stared after the rapidly disappearing Hulk in disbelief.

"I came out here to help you fight..."

"And you seriously ran off first?"
