The moment two green monsters started staging an unrestricted heavyweight brawl through the middle of New York, complete with complimentary urban renewal and vehicle demolition, S.H.I.E.L.D. knew about it.
The instant the Hulk and the Abomination clashed, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s surveillance network locked onto the battle.
Nick Fury, however, did absolutely nothing.
From the comfort of his office, he simply watched the live high-definition feed.
General Ross had never been on good terms with S.H.I.E.L.D. He’d tried to obstruct them over the enhanced soldiers’ bodies not long ago, and this entire disaster was one of his own making.
Let him clean it up himself.
Besides, fistfights between skyscraper-sized monsters weren’t exactly S.H.I.E.L.D.’s specialty.
Their tactical teams weren’t significantly stronger than the military’s elite units. Even Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton probably couldn’t stop either creature in a direct confrontation.
Fury had no practical solution.
He fully expected to sit in his office and watch events unfold until someone won.
Then his office phone rang.
The number belonged to the agents assigned to monitor Evenson.
A bad feeling immediately settled in his stomach.
He answered.
Before he could speak, a panicked voice burst through the receiver.
"Director! We’ve got a problem! Evenson just headed out to fight the two monsters!"
A vein bulged on Fury’s forehead.
He closed his eyes.
When he finally spoke, his voice was unnaturally calm.
"Are you certain?"
"One hundred percent, sir."
Fury rubbed a hand across his bald head.
"...Why?"
Damn it.
I literally just reminded you not to go looking for trouble.
I even approved a full month’s salary for you.
Since when are you this eager to play hero?
You still have to keep Tony Stark alive.
If you get yourself killed, Tony eventually dies too.
Do you realize that’s practically a double homicide?
He took a slow breath before exploding anyway.
"Why didn’t you stop him?"
The unfortunate agent nearly burst into tears.
"Sir... I don’t think we could have."
"He looked..."
"...extremely angry."
Fury froze.
If Evenson had truly lost his temper...
Those agents really couldn’t stop him.
Then another question occurred to him.
"What did Hulk and the Abomination do to make him that angry?"
The agent sounded almost embarrassed.
"During the fight... one of them threw a taxi."
"It landed on Mr. Richter’s car."
"...The vehicle appears to be a total loss."
"..."
"..."
"Oh."
Fury immediately gave up.
"In that case..."
"Let him go."
He understood completely.
That car represented the single most expensive thing Evenson owned.
He’d only had it for a few days.
He’d barely driven it once before the police impounded it.
Now his driver’s license was almost ready...
...and the car had been smashed into scrap metal first.
After that emotional roller coaster, Evenson was probably operating on pure rage.
"You lucky bastard!"
The Abomination threw another crushing punch.
"You don’t deserve that power!"
The Hulk answered in the only language he cared to speak.
"RAAAARGH!"
Then he charged.
Overall, the Abomination held the advantage.
Before becoming monsters, Bruce Banner had been a brilliant scientist.
Emil Blonsky had been one of the world’s finest special operations soldiers.
His combat instincts, battlefield awareness, and fighting techniques vastly exceeded Banner’s.
Previously, Hulk’s overwhelming physical superiority had been enough to compensate.
Now that Blonsky possessed comparable strength...
Skill began tipping the scales.
He thoroughly enjoyed dominating the opponent who had humiliated him in Brazil.
So absorbed was he in the fight that he failed to notice an unusual sound approaching from behind.
It wasn’t human footsteps.
It was the rapid rhythm of four-legged creatures sprinting across pavement.
Claws scraped against asphalt.
And there wasn’t just one.
There were two.
After hurling the Hulk aside once again, the Abomination finally sensed something behind him.
Too late.
Before he could even turn around, two lean, wolf-like beasts nearly six feet long crashed into him.
One latched onto his shoulders.
The other clamped onto his head.
They bit.
They clawed.
They tore.
Their attacks barely penetrated his hide, drawing only shallow wounds that healed almost immediately.
But they were incredibly annoying.
The Abomination roared in frustration.
One massive hand reached overhead, seized a tail, and slammed the creature into the pavement.
Bones shattered.
The beast lay motionless.
Growling, he reached behind himself to grab the second attacker.
Twice it slipped free.
His patience snapped.
Instead of pulling it off, he simply leaped into the air and threw his full weight backward.
Crunch.
The sound of breaking bones echoed beneath him.
The second beast stopped moving.
The Abomination rose with a savage grin.
Only then did he finally have time to discover what had attacked him.
He never got the chance.
The Hulk slammed into his waist like a runaway locomotive, driving him halfway down the street.
As he tumbled away, the Abomination barely caught a furious voice shouting from somewhere behind him.
"You wrecked my car!"
"You smashed my windows!"
"...Wait."
"...Who the hell are you?"
The first half sounded like righteous fury.
The second somehow transformed seamlessly into genuine confusion.
Only one person could switch emotional gears that effortlessly.
Evenson Richter.
Still consumed by grief over his car, he’d attacked the first green monster he saw.
His opening spell had been Dreadbite.
The Warlock spell summoned two Dread Hounds.
They resembled Felhounds, but their bodies were longer and leaner, sacrificing magical abilities for exceptional speed and vicious physical attacks.
Strictly speaking, they weren’t demons at all.
They were predators native to the Twisting Nether.
A full pack of Dread Hounds could tear armies apart.
Two alone...
Against the Abomination...
Were little more than an irritation.
Against ordinary humans, however, a single one would happily reduce someone to scattered remains.
Now that Evenson finally had a clear look at the battlefield...
He frowned.
Something wasn’t right.
The creature wrestling the Hulk didn’t quite match the Abomination he remembered.
