On the drive home, Evenson remained unusually quiet.

Whether he was lost in thought...

Or still haunted by the motel clerk’s expression, which had practically screamed, That’s it? You were only in there for five minutes?

...was anyone’s guess.

The moment he stepped through his front door, however, everything clicked.

He burst into laughter.

"So that’s it..."

"I knew something felt off."

"I knew it..."

Sarah looked up in alarm.

"Oh no..."

She hurried over.

"Boss, don’t take it too hard. Every warlock eventually summons a demon they can’t control. Losing everything in one ritual isn’t exactly uncommon."

She tried to sound encouraging.

"Besides, you managed to calm them down. Sure, you accidentally recruited two terrifying demon queens, but you’re still alive. Things could’ve gone much worse."

Evenson’s smile froze.

"...Is that really how fragile you think I am?"

Before Sarah could answer, he waved the question away.

"Forget that."

His expression became serious again.

"Didn’t you think..."

"...their behavior was strange?"

Sarah blinked.

"Strange?"

"In what way?"

"When I first faced them, I was too nervous to notice."

That much was understandable.

Two high-ranking Eredar standing in front of him had been enough to keep anyone on edge.

"But after replaying everything in my head..."

"The whole encounter feels wrong."

Sarah frowned.

"I don’t see it."

"Their arrogance, their attitude, their plans for this world..."

"Everything seemed exactly how powerful demons usually behave."

Evenson slowly raised a hand.

"Do you remember the ritual circle?"

"I’d prepared five suppression arrays."

"Even after Sachiel devoured the soul crystals powering them..."

"...the arrays themselves were still intact."

He looked directly at Sarah.

"Yet neither twin even acknowledged them."

That shouldn’t have happened.

Altheressa was a master warlock.

Much of modern warlock magic ultimately traced its origins back to the Eredar.

There was no chance she had failed to recognize those arrays.

"But..." Sarah said, "didn’t you explain that?"

"And Lady Agatha confirmed your explanation afterward."

Evenson had claimed the suppression arrays existed because powerful demons naturally attracted greedy warlocks, and Agatha had supported his story by confirming he had intended to rescue the twins.

"That explanation was something I invented on the spot."

He shook his head.

"I barely had time to think."

"If Agatha hadn’t backed me up..."

"...there’s no way they would’ve accepted it."

He leaned back.

"And speaking of Agatha..."

"She’s the biggest inconsistency of all."

Sarah waited silently.

"The twins were her former masters."

"It makes perfect sense that she’d want to rescue them."

"But why involve me?"

He spread his hands.

"Couldn’t she find a suitable demon anywhere in the Fissure of Woe?"

"Instead she relied on a warlock whose strength isn’t even particularly impressive."

"And after succeeding..."

"...she never suggested taking them back."

"She simply left them here."

He frowned.

"Even their conversation felt rushed."

"Almost like..."

"...she was afraid of being seen."

Sarah thought for a moment.

"The Fissure of Woe isn’t exactly pleasant."

"I wouldn’t want to stay there either."

She knew that place firsthand.

It was miserable.

Evenson shook his head.

"But why would they stay there at all?"

"They’re Kil’jaeden’s lieutenants."

"They aren’t ordinary demons stationed at the Fissure."

"If they returned..."

"...they’d be reassigned to the front almost immediately."

Sarah offered another possibility.

"They still want this world."

"If they present Earth to the Legion, they’ll earn tremendous rewards."

"That’s a lot safer than fighting on Azeroth."

She wasn’t wrong.

The war raging on Azeroth had become a meat grinder.

Serving there meant risking annihilation.

Earth, by comparison, was practically a vacation.

"Is that really what they want?"

Evenson sat down in his usual chair.

"I don’t think they’re actually that interested in delivering Earth to the Legion."

Sarah stared.

"What?"

"They talked about it constantly."

"How is that not interested?"

Evenson narrowed his eyes.

"Our contract."

"Didn’t they accept it far too easily?"

Sarah nodded reluctantly.

"That part was fast."

"But from my perspective..."

"...they benefited far more than you did."

"Why refuse?"

"Because the contract also prevents them from selling this world without my approval."

Evenson tapped the armrest.

"If I never agree..."

"...the Legion never hears about Earth."

He looked at Sarah.

"Shouldn’t that have worried them?"

Sarah frowned.

"...Maybe."

"And another thing."

"When I explained the organizations that might oppose us..."

"They didn’t seem especially interested."

"They asked questions," Sarah pointed out.

"They wanted to know about the Masters of the Mystic Arts, S.H.I.E.L.D., and your plans."

"They asked."

"But only superficially."

Evenson shook his head.

"I gave them broad ideas."

"Nothing detailed."

"Honestly, I couldn’t have explained the details even if I’d tried."

"They never pressed further."

"They never questioned my assumptions."

"They never offered their own opinions."

"It was almost..."

"...as though they were asking out of politeness."

Sarah slowly fell silent.

The more she thought about it...

The stranger it seemed.

"They touched every subject."

"But never dug into any of them."

"Exactly."

Evenson nodded.

"And one last point."

"I’ve never explained this world to Agatha."

"I was careful."

"I never told a high-ranking demon about Earth’s defenses."

"So..."

"What was she hiding from?"

Sarah’s eyes widened.

"If she didn’t know about the Masters of the Mystic Arts..."

"...or Asgard..."

"Then whoever she feared..."

"...had to be in the Twisting Nether."

Evenson nodded once.

"Exactly."

"If I’m right..."

"The Eredar twins have fallen out of favor with the Burning Legion."

Sarah’s eyes widened even further.

"That’s why they won’t go back."

"That’s why Agatha had to rescue them through you."

"And that’s why she avoided contacting them openly."

She looked at him.

"But then..."

"Their loyalty to the Legion..."

"And all that talk about offering Earth to the Burning Legion..."

Evenson gave a knowing smile.

"An act."

"They couldn’t know whether I was truly loyal to the Legion."

"If I’d been a genuine Legion warlock..."

"...betraying them would’ve been the obvious choice."

"So they performed."

"They pretended to be unwaveringly loyal..."

"...until they were sure which side I was on."
