When Sargeras first invited the Eredar to join the Burning Legion, he showed them a vision.
An endless crusade.
World after world reduced to ash beneath the Legion’s advance.
To the Eredar, it had sounded magnificent.
Almost the entire race embraced his cause.
To prove their loyalty, they didn’t merely join the Legion.
They destroyed Argus with their own hands.
At first, everything unfolded exactly as Sargeras had promised.
Countless worlds fell.
Civilizations vanished.
The Legion seemed unstoppable.
Then they found Azeroth.
What should have been another routine conquest became the campaign that refused to end.
Again and again, the Legion was driven back.
Even Archimonde, one of the Eredar’s greatest leaders...
...had died there.
Twice.
Needless to say, the Legion’s upper ranks were less than pleased.
This wasn’t the sales pitch we’d signed up for.
The Eredar hadn’t sacrificed their homeworld just to become loot drops for Azeroth’s heroes.
As Kil’jaeden’s lieutenants, the twins naturally shared that growing resentment.
So when the Council of the Black Harvest captured them...
They didn’t imitate dreadlords like Varimathras, pretending to defect while secretly remaining loyal to the Legion.
Instead...
They betrayed the Legion outright.
They revealed everything they knew.
Shared Legion secrets.
Worked directly against Legion operations.
More than one Black Harvest victory had been possible only because of information provided by the twins.
That wasn’t a temporary lapse in loyalty.
It wasn’t wounded pride.
It was treason.
Open, undeniable treason.
Whether Kil’jaeden himself still harbored doubts about the Legion’s direction no longer mattered.
No Eredar commander could tolerate betrayal on that scale.
"They’re probably even more afraid of the Legion than I am."
Evenson folded his hands together.
"I’ve never done anything personally against them."
"If I keep my head down, they have no reason to single me out."
He smiled knowingly.
"The twins don’t have that luxury."
"And Kil’jaeden..."
"...has never been good at forgiveness."
He only had to look at history.
When Velen glimpsed the truth through the Light and concluded that following Sargeras was a terrible idea, he fled with a small group of followers who would eventually become the draenei.
Kil’jaeden had never let it go.
For tens of thousands of years he pursued Velen relentlessly across the cosmos.
He even manipulated Velen’s own son into hunting his father.
If that was how Kil’jaeden treated someone who merely refused to follow...
What fate awaited two lieutenants who had actively betrayed the Legion?
The answer was obvious.
"They’re acting."
Evenson leaned back in his chair.
"They’re pretending to be perfect Legion loyalists."
"They’re testing me."
Agatha’s recommendation wasn’t enough.
To them...
Evenson remained an unfamiliar warlock.
And warlocks had a rather unfortunate reputation.
If there was one thing the profession never lacked, it was double agents.
Selling out allies.
Changing sides.
Trading worlds for power.
Those were practically occupational hazards.
If Evenson hadn’t possessed three Artifact Weapons capable of taking them down with him...
Killing him to erase a witness would’ve been the safest option.
"So..."
Evenson smiled.
"If they want to perform..."
"I’ll play along."
There was no need to expose the truth.
Barely two hours earlier, they’d all been acting like model Legion loyalists, swearing devotion, discussing how to divide the rewards for conquering Earth, and plotting how to eliminate anyone who stood in their way.
Turning around immediately and admitting the entire conversation had been an act would be painfully awkward.
Even warlocks and demons had their pride.
Besides...
What if he was wrong?
Imagine marching back to the motel and proudly announcing:
"Everything I said was fake. I actually hate the Burning Legion."
Only to discover the twins really were fanatically loyal.
That would be less "clever deduction" and more "walking voluntarily into an execution."
Better to leave things unspoken.
Both sides could continue the performance while quietly understanding more than they admitted.
Sarah hesitated.
"Boss..."
"I have one small question."
"What is it?"
"...Didn’t you forget something?"
Evenson blinked.
"What?"
"Taylor and the others."
She crossed her arms.
"They’re still standing out in the middle of nowhere waiting for you to summon them home."
Evenson’s eyes widened.
"...Crap."
He slapped his forehead.
No wonder the house felt so empty.
Without another word, he hurried into the basement and began the summoning ritual.
Moments later, the familiar demons appeared.
The instant they materialized, Evenson frowned.
Something was wrong.
"What happened?"
Taylor and the others hadn’t assumed their usual human disguises.
Instead, they stood in their true demonic forms.
More concerning...
Fresh blood stained Taylor’s battle axe.
Taylor answered in his usual deep voice.
"Two of this world’s mages."
"They arrived through a portal roughly two hours after you left."
Two hours...
Evenson calculated the timing immediately.
The ritual that had summoned the twins had been enormous.
He had even used the Skull of the Man’ari.
By then, the concealment wards he’d prepared would have been reaching their limits.
The local sorcerers must have sensed the lingering magical disturbance and come to investigate.
He rubbed his forehead.
Damn it.
The unexpected outcome of the summoning had completely distracted him.
He’d neglected the cleanup.
"What happened after that?"
No point regretting it now.
Only the result mattered.
Taylor grinned, revealing rows of sharp teeth.
"They were disappointingly weak."
He casually lifted his bloodstained axe.
The implication required no explanation.
Evenson frowned.
"They didn’t try to escape?"
"Or send a message?"
Even inexperienced sorcerers should have managed something before dying.
Taylor looked toward Habus, who had already resumed his hound-like form.
"They tried."
"But..."
"...Habus hit them with Spell Lock."
"After that..."
"...they couldn’t do anything."
