After staging a spectacular rescue of his brother, Thor wasted no time with sentiment.

The moment they landed atop a lonely mountain ridge, he grabbed Loki by the collar and hurled him onto the rocky ground hard enough to crack stone.

Then he stood over him, Mjolnir in hand, eyes blazing.

Loki’s heart skipped a beat.

Is this it? Has my dear brother finally snapped?

Instead of panicking, he smoothly slipped into conversation, steering things toward childhood memories and grand ideals, hoping to defuse Thor’s temper.

To his surprise, it worked.

Thor’s fury gradually softened as the brothers reminisced about Asgard and the days before everything had gone wrong.

Watching from afar, Odin’s two ravens seemed thoroughly unimpressed.

They circled overhead, let out several distinctly irritated caws, then flew back toward Asgard as if deciding their king didn’t need a full report. The situation had clearly devolved into another family argument.

Eventually, Loki made a mistake.

"I’ve seen the Tesseract’s true power."

Thor’s expression changed immediately.

"Who showed it to you?"

His voice was sharp enough to cut stone.

For once, the God of Thunder wasn’t slow to connect the dots.

Someone else had been pulling Loki’s strings.

"Abandon this madness," Thor said earnestly. "Give me the Tesseract, and come home."

There was no mockery in his voice.

Only concern.

Loki’s face turned cold.

"So you don’t trust me."

"I don’t know what you’re talking about."

Thor clenched Mjolnir tighter.

If words failed, he’d drag his brother back to Asgard unconscious if necessary.

"Listen to me, brother..."

WHAM!

A red-and-gold missile smashed into Thor before he could finish.

Tony Stark had arrived.

Considering there were only two princes of Asgard in existence, he’d managed to tackle both of them in the same day.

That was almost an achievement.

Thor rolled across the ground before coming to his feet, glaring.

"You interrupt at the worst possible moment."

Mjolnir swung.

Tony had already endured enough humiliation for one day.

He wasn’t interested in backing down now.

The Iron Man armor surged forward, and the two crashed together in a shower of sparks.

The mountain echoed with every impact.

Thor seized an opening, hurled Tony across the ridge, then raised Mjolnir toward the sky.

Storm clouds gathered almost instantly.

Lightning ripped across the heavens before converging into the enchanted hammer.

Thor brought it down.

The thunderbolt struck Iron Man head-on.

JARVIS spoke a heartbeat later.

Power levels at four hundred percent.

Tony blinked.

"...Seriously?"

He had expected catastrophic damage.

Instead, the lightning had supercharged the arc reactor beyond maximum capacity.

"Well... thanks."

Without wasting the gift, Tony unleashed everything.

Repulsors.

Chest reactor.

Every available weapon fired simultaneously.

The concentrated blast hammered Thor backward across the mountainside.

Thor planted Mjolnir into the earth to stop his slide.

"So lightning isn’t enough."

Then he charged.

The fight immediately devolved into brutal close combat.

Tony slammed Thor against a cliff face.

Thor answered by grabbing the armor and throwing him hundreds of feet.

Tony’s superior mobility kept him alive, but in raw strength there was no comparison.

Thor could dent Iron Man’s armor with his bare hands.

If Mjolnir landed cleanly...

Tony would probably be calling Evenson for emergency magical reconstruction.

The two separated once more.

A faint whistle sliced through the air.

Thor’s instincts screamed.

He turned just in time to see a vicious silver war glaive spinning toward his head.

Mjolnir intercepted it with a ringing clash.

The weapon ricocheted away.

A figure burst from the treeline.

She caught the returning glaive in one hand without breaking stride.

A woman.

Before Thor had time to process anything else, she slammed straight into him.

Mjolnir came up defensively.

The impact still shoved him backward more than thirty feet.

Tony stared.

His expression slowly became one of absolute despair.

Aunt Peggy...

I’m never escaping childhood trauma.

Forget the Anti-Warlock project.

Maybe I should design an Anti-Aunt Peggy suit.

Peggy Carter had reached the battlefield well before Captain America.

The moment she’d arrived, she’d found someone beating up her favorite nephew.

That had simplified the situation considerably.

She’d opened with a perfectly timed throw of Vengeance, forcing Thor to block.

Meanwhile she charged from another angle carrying Havoc.

The deflected glaive returned precisely where she’d calculated it would.

She caught it mid-sprint.

Then activated Fel Rush.

Green fire exploded around her.

Thor barely had time to react before Peggy appeared above him.

Her back was turned.

The burning glaive disappeared behind her silhouette.

Then she spun.

The fel-wreathed blade carved downward.

Thor caught the strike, but his eyes widened.

The green flames were consuming his lightning.

Not extinguishing it.

Consuming it.

With a roar, Thor threw Peggy backward.

She vanished.

Not invisibility.

Speed.

Left.

Thor blocked.

Right.

Another strike.

Front.

Behind.

Peggy moved like living lightning, every attack arriving from an impossible angle.

Even the veteran warrior found himself forced onto the defensive.

For the first time in the battle, Thor lost sight of his opponent.

Above.

He looked up.

Peggy was already descending.

This time she didn’t swing.

She leveled Havoc at him.

BOOM.

A massive sphere of fel fire erupted from the weapon.

The recoil launched Peggy backward into a graceful flip before she landed lightly on one knee.

Blade Dance.

Finished.

Thor disappeared inside the explosion.

A moment later...

He walked out.

Smoke drifted from his armor.

Ghost Sight revealed almost no meaningful injuries.

Peggy exhaled slowly.

"Incredible."

Thor rested Mjolnir across one shoulder.

"I normally don’t fight women."

He studied her with newfound respect.

"But I’ll gladly make an exception."

"Other than Sif, you’re the strongest warrior I’ve ever seen."

Lightning burst across the sky.

The earth trembled beneath his feet.

Gone was the easygoing prince.

Now stood the God of Thunder.

Peggy immediately recognized the difference.

Everything she’d accomplished until now had depended on speed, surprise, and relentless pressure.

Thor hadn’t been fighting seriously.

Now he was.

And if this continued...

She wasn’t confident she could win.

Fortunately, she’d noticed something useful.

"You mentioned Sif."

Thor paused.

"Yes?"

"Dark hair."

"Carries a greatsword."

"Wears Asgardian armor."

Thor’s eyes lit up.

"You’ve seen Sif?"

"I haven’t seen her in quite some time."

"Where is she?"

Peggy blinked.

"...She was on the Quinjet."

Thor frowned.

"...She was?"

"You didn’t notice?"

Thor looked genuinely embarrassed.

"I was... rather focused on rescuing Loki."

A metallic clang interrupted the conversation.

Without even looking, Thor casually swatted a red vibranium shield out of the air with Mjolnir.

Still facing Peggy, he called over his shoulder.

"One moment."

Then he continued,

"I remember leaving Sif with a sorcerer."

"What was his name..."

"Evenson Richter?" Peggy guessed.

Thor snapped his fingers.

"That’s him."

"That... head-stealing fellow."

He still hadn’t forgiven Evenson for harvesting one of his enemies’ heads during their last adventure.

"Where is he?"

Peggy stared at him.

"He was also on the Quinjet."

"...You missed him too?"

Thor scratched the back of his head.

"...That explains a few things."

"So..."

He pointed between Peggy and the distant aircraft.

"You’re with that organization."

"The..."

"The..."

He searched helplessly for the name.

"SHIELD," Peggy supplied.

"Yes!"

Thor smiled broadly.

"That’s it."

"Then this has all been a misunderstanding."

"We’re allies."

He still remembered promising Agent Coulson that Asgard and SHIELD would stand together.

Peggy relaxed slightly.

"Shall we head back and talk?"

Thor nodded.

"Agreed."

Knowing she worked with SHIELD, knew Sif, and knew Evenson was more than enough for him.

As he lowered Mjolnir, something occurred to him.

He turned toward the nearby trees.

"By the way..."

"What did you want?"

Steve Rogers slowly lowered his empty hand.

"...Nothing."
