Life in the Felscar Rift had become rather pitiful for Gnosis.
The old demon trudged away with slumped shoulders, every step heavy with despair. Despite his fearsome appearance, he somehow managed to resemble a broken man marching toward indentured servitude.
Agatha watched his retreating figure and shook her head.
"Tell me," she said, glancing at Evenson. "Whose idea was this?"
"You mean contracting Gnosis?"
Evenson smiled.
"Mine."
Agatha arched an eyebrow.
"Something wrong with that?"
"Nothing."
She folded two of her arms across her chest.
"I simply assumed a scheme this elegant must have come from my mistresses."
Evenson snorted.
Is my reputation really that bad?
Am I incapable of having a good idea on my own?
"Why do you say that?"
"Because Gnosis isn’t an ordinary demon."
A nostalgic look crossed Agatha’s face.
"He spent so many millennia in obscurity that people forgot how important he once was."
"I know."
His answer surprised her.
Then Evenson shrugged.
"Thanks to you, I’ve become extremely cautious about summoning demons and signing contracts."
His previous experience with the Eredar Twins had taught him an unforgettable lesson.
Blindly summoning powerful demons without researching them first was an excellent way to ruin one’s life.
Or end it.
This time, he’d done his homework.
Coincidentally, the Eredar Twins had once commanded the Felscar Rift themselves, and Agatha had served under them during that era. There was no one better qualified to explain Gnosis’s history.
Agatha chuckled.
"Fair enough."
"With my mistresses at your side, it isn’t surprising that you know all this."
Long ago, the Felscar Rift had stood on the Burning Legion’s front lines.
It had been transformed into a colossal fortress, complete with massive fel artillery batteries, deployment platforms for fel war machines, and docking facilities for Legion warships.
Gnosis had designed nearly all of it.
When the Legion’s front advanced deeper into enemy territory, the war machines and fleets departed with it.
The artillery remained.
An arsenal abandoned to time.
Evenson’s eyes lit up.
"The only question is..."
"Does any of it still work?"
The weapons had been sitting here for tens of thousands of years.
Even Legion craftsmanship had its limits.
Agatha smiled confidently.
"Don’t worry."
"Gnosis has been retired for ages."
"He needed hobbies."
"So he spent his time forcing the workers down here to maintain every artillery battery."
"They’re still in excellent condition."
She smiled mysteriously.
"And more importantly..."
"The activation keys are still in Gnosis’s possession."
She gestured toward the silent Soul Engine.
"Restore power to that engine."
"Recharge the batteries."
"And every fel cannon in the Rift comes back online."
She sighed with genuine nostalgia.
"Those weapons earned their reputation."
"The world we invaded back then wasn’t weak."
"They constantly sent strike teams of twenty or thirty elite soldiers deep behind our lines."
"They sabotaged everything they could."
"But in the end..."
"Most of them died beneath those cannons."
Evenson’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully.
Every corner of the Rift...
If the artillery had eliminated infiltrators throughout the region, then its firing range likely covered the entire Felscar Rift.
That alone made Gnosis invaluable.
Evenson smiled.
"This Lord Harmondas..."
"He doesn’t sound particularly competent."
"He left that kind of authority in the hands of someone he’d exiled."
Agatha rolled her eyes.
"Harmondas believes one thing."
"’I’m the strongest creature in the Rift.’"
"’I can crush everyone else by myself.’"
"’No one could possibly threaten me.’"
She snorted.
"That’s about as far as his thinking goes."
Evenson nodded solemnly.
"Pit Lords have a reputation for being enormous and spectacularly thick-headed."
"Harmondas seems determined to prove the stereotype correct."
"Exactly."
Agatha turned away.
"Sometimes I truly wonder how he became Lord."
She paused before adding quietly,
"My mistresses would’ve done a far better job."
"I don’t disagree."
Evenson smiled knowingly.
"In fact..."
"I suspect they’re the only ones truly worthy of ruling this place."
Agatha looked back.
Their eyes met.
Both smiled.
Neither needed to say another word.
The following morning, Evenson arrived bright and early at the corporation the Twins had established as their public front.
For a company launched with sixty billion dollars in capital...
The headquarters looked surprisingly ordinary.
A modest office tower.
Just over thirty stories tall.
The sort of building that blended effortlessly into any American business district.
When Evenson had first seen it, he’d honestly suspected the Twins had embezzled half the budget for entirely frivolous purposes.
Now, however...
He had to admit he’d judged too quickly.
"The real surprises are underground."
Beneath the building lay a vast research complex extending roughly ten levels below the surface.
The Eredar Twins had even left their favorite nightclub behind to inspect the facility today.
"We owe quite a bit to General Ross."
Sathrovarr... no.
Sathrovarr was wrong. Wait.
Sathrovarr wasn’t here.
Sathrovarr’s counterpart, Sathrovarr?
No.
It was Sathrovarr?
Saltheril? No.
Salyssra?
No.
Saly...
Saltheril was incorrect.
Sathrovarr was male.
The speaker was Sathrovarr’s counterpart.
Instead:
Saltheril? No.
Salysra?
No.
Saly...
Salyssra was not an official name.
Sathrovarr’s female counterpart is Saltheril?
Rather than inventing names, preserve the established ones.
"General Ross handed over quite a few useful assets before he lost his position," Salyssra said.
The building had originally belonged to the U.S. military.
General Thaddeus Ross had built it as one of several classified facilities supporting his super-soldier programs.
Then came the Abomination incident.
Ross fell from power.
His projects were terminated.
Research data was destroyed.
The facility was abandoned.
At the same time, the military quietly found itself paying enormous sums to repair damaged infrastructure and compensate civilian victims.
Selling an unused research complex became an attractive solution.
Officially, the building had no future.
Unofficially...
It represented an opportunity.
The buyers certainly wouldn’t be ordinary businessmen.
Perhaps they would become useful partners someday.
And, naturally, private transactions of that scale allowed plenty of people to profit along the way.
"The military removed anything truly irreplaceable," Alythess said.
"But they left the infrastructure."
"That should be enough for our early development."
Evenson nodded.
"It’ll do."
Alythess suddenly changed the subject.
"Enough about the building."
"I imagine your trip into the Void was successful."
"It was."
Evenson couldn’t hide his satisfaction.
"Gnosis."
"There’s no one better suited to lead Project Edge of Tomorrow."
"I remember him."
Salyssra nodded.
"He used to serve under me."
A teasing smile slowly spread across her lips.
"But that isn’t what I’m asking."
Her crimson eyes glittered.
"So..."
"How was Agatha’s backside?"
Evenson answered automatically.
"Very fair, actually..."
The words left his mouth.
His smile vanished.
Cold sweat instantly formed on his forehead.
He stared at the Twins in disbelief.
"H-how..."
"...how do you two know about that?"
