People are capable of incredible things when they’re pushed to the brink.
Evenson was beginning to think that saying was true in every possible sense.
If you never backed yourself into a corner, you might never discover just how much you were capable of.
For example, if he didn’t handle the situation in front of him properly, he wasn’t facing an ordinary romantic disaster.
He was facing a one-way trip to the underworld of interpersonal hell.
All because he’d never learned when to keep his mouth shut.
He’d said whatever came to mind, and now the consequences had arrived.
On the other hand...
A godfather with two beautiful demon goddaughters?
Okay, that actually sounds pretty damn exciting.
Evenson’s thoughts were an absolute mess.
His outward demeanor, however, was impeccable.
He calmly scrolled through the article.
Calmly finished reading it.
Then calmly handed the phone back.
The two blades in the Eredar Twins’ hands were hovering less than a centimeter from him.
At this critical juncture, Evenson decided that lying was probably his best option.
If he could make the lie convincing enough, perhaps he could avoid being chopped into several very educational pieces.
"Chinese really is an incredibly profound language."
He nodded solemnly.
"Fortunately, I can read it. And this is actually a pretty well-written article."
He paused.
"But what exactly do you want me to explain?"
His expression shifted into genuine confusion.
"Do you want an analysis of the article’s central theme? Or perhaps the author’s emotional state when he wrote it? Because I can’t answer that immediately. This is honestly the first time I’ve ever seen this article."
"Your first time?"
Salorass narrowed her eyes.
He’d been quoting lines from the article so naturally that there was absolutely no way she was going to believe he’d never seen it before.
"You know my education isn’t exactly impressive."
Evenson lowered his voice, looking mildly embarrassed and offended.
"I barely finished middle school."
He corrected himself.
"Actually, I didn’t even finish that."
He gestured helplessly at the phone.
"Something like this probably requires an advanced university course in Chinese literature."
Who said education was the key to surviving in this world?
At this moment, Evenson was beginning to think that having several advanced degrees would only make things worse.
At least then, he’d have earned himself the full attention of two Eredar women holding blades.
That was a much less survivable outcome.
Clap.
Aurecess suddenly brought her hands together.
"Looks like this was all a misunderstanding."
She smiled.
"Then forget about it."
"I have absolutely no idea what just happened, but if you say it was a misunderstanding, then I’m sure it was."
Evenson nodded so vigorously he looked like he’d been fitted with a vibrating motor.
Inside, he was thanking Aurecess for her extraordinary generosity.
He had, naturally, forgotten that when the twins had first discovered Claire’s existence, Aurecess had been the one who flew over and kicked him directly in the face.
"We should focus on the important matters."
Salorass stood frozen.
After several long seconds, she turned and stared at her sister in disbelief.
Aurecess blinked.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Because after several thousand years..."
Salorass slowly shook her head.
"I’ve just discovered that you and I aren’t even having the same conversation."
Where had their dignity gone?
Where was the cold, aloof attitude they’d agreed upon?
What happened to standing together against their common enemy?
How had Aurecess suddenly become so understanding and accommodating?
She’d made Salorass look like the petty one.
That was calculated.
Evenson, meanwhile, was desperately trying to move past the entire subject.
"I was actually planning to explain all of this when I got back."
He glanced between the twins.
"I didn’t expect you two to come here as well. Honestly, I’m surprised."
He desperately wanted to bury the previous conversation.
Playing a role could certainly be entertaining.
But if you got your character positioning wrong, the story could end very badly.
Unfortunately, he’d been so busy dealing with the twins that he’d forgotten about the woman standing directly behind him.
Claire’s eyebrows drew together.
"So you’re saying that after we get back to New York, you were planning to sneak off and meet with these two demons?"
Her voice was dangerously calm.
"I assume you weren’t planning to invite me."
Evenson sighed internally.
The waters of his romantic life weren’t merely deep.
He’d apparently wandered straight into a supernatural whirlpool.
He hadn’t found romance.
He’d found a curse.
"Why don’t you shut up, little kitten?"
Aurecess had been smiling only a moment earlier.
Now her expression turned cold.
"Pets don’t get a say here."
Claire stared at her.
"What did you just call me?"
She’d always known she and the Eredar Twins weren’t going to become best friends.
Unless Evenson somehow found another woman to cheat on all of them with, there was little chance of peaceful coexistence.
But calling her a pet?
That crossed a line.
Salorass gave a cold laugh.
"You really think this little warlock loves you?"
She stepped forward.
"You’re far too naive."
The Eredar Twins were proud.
That pride was precisely why they refused to lower themselves to the level of ordinary women and openly fight over a man.
Begging someone to stay, or competing for his affection, meant acknowledging that Claire stood on equal footing with them.
That was beneath them.
But refusing to fight didn’t mean they hadn’t thought about the problem.
They had.
A great deal.
After all, they’d been the ones who had made the first move.
They had been the first to cooperate with Evenson.
The first to help him.
And unlike most women, they could freely switch between their human forms and their more demonic appearances.
They had advantages.
They had history.
They had chemistry.
By every reasonable calculation, the odds should have been heavily in their favor.
So why did it sometimes feel as though Evenson was leaning toward Claire?
After much careful consideration, the twins had arrived at what they believed was a perfectly reasonable explanation.
Salorass smiled mockingly.
"Think about it."
"An evil, devious warlock falling for someone as pure and innocent as you. Strange, isn’t it?"
"But there’s actually nothing difficult to understand."
Aurecess’s smile became downright sinister.
"In the study of warlock magic, no matter how careful the practitioner is, some degree of spiritual damage is inevitable."
She looked directly at Claire.
"Part of the soul is lost."
"And the part of Evenson’s soul that he lost..."
Salorass continued for her.
"...was the part represented by your purity and innocence."
Claire’s expression changed.
"That’s why you’re so attractive to him."
Salorass continued advancing.
"He doesn’t love you."
"He is searching for the part of his soul that he lost."
She stopped only a few steps away.
"You’re merely a substitute for that missing piece."
Aurecess’s smile deepened as she approached from the other side.
"Honestly, you should consider yourself lucky."
"Evenson has always been excessively cautious with warlock magic. His soul isn’t damaged too severely."
She tilted her head.
"Otherwise, his obsession with purity and innocence might be much more pathological."
"He might become obsessed with destroying people who possess those qualities himself."
Claire’s face went pale.
The two demons continued closing in.
She wanted to dismiss their words as complete nonsense.
She wanted to laugh at them.
But then she remembered something.
Ever since she’d met Evenson, there had always been something strange about the way he looked at her.
A fixation she had never quite understood.
She knew what Evenson was capable of.
She knew the methods he was willing to use.
A man like him could have surrounded himself with beautiful women if he’d wanted to.
He had the power.
He had the charm when he bothered to use it.
Yet he hadn’t.
Not until her.
Not until she’d suddenly appeared in his life.
Had it really been love at first sight?
A strange, impossible connection?
Or was what the two demons were saying actually true?
Was Evenson searching for something he’d lost inside himself?
Claire desperately wanted the first answer.
She wanted to believe that he’d chosen her because she was simply... her.
But now, for the first time, she found herself wondering whether the second possibility was more likely.
"Enough!"
Evenson’s voice cut through the room.
The twins stopped.
Evenson stared at them in silence for several seconds.
When he finally spoke, his voice was low.
"You’ve gone too far."
