"What did you say?"
The Eredar Twins spoke in perfect unison.
Neither looked particularly pleased.
In their experience, Evenson usually went along with them. Even when they disagreed, the little warlock generally chose his words carefully, wrapping his objections in layers of diplomacy or smoothing things over with a few well-placed compliments.
This was different.
For the first time, he’d actually confronted them.
And worse, he’d done it for another woman.
It was enough to make both twins stare at him in surprise.
"I said you’ve gone too far."
Evenson repeated himself without backing down.
The twins exchanged a glance.
Had someone secretly pumped this man full of confidence while they weren’t looking?
Salorass quickly adopted an indifferent expression.
"Oh? Is that so?"
She shrugged.
"What exactly do you want us to do? Apologize?"
Evenson opened his mouth.
He was about to answer when Claire spoke first.
"Is what they said true, Evenson?"
Her voice was quiet.
Disappointed.
There was even a trace of fear beneath it.
Evenson immediately turned toward her.
"No..."
"Don’t answer yet."
Claire raised one hand and gently covered his mouth.
"Some things deserve a little thought before you say them."
She lowered her hand and forced herself to glance around casually.
"Besides, I’m obviously not welcome here."
She took a breath.
"So I’ll go back first. Think about what you really want to say, and then give me your answer."
Her eyes were slightly wet when she looked directly into his.
"And remember..."
"I want the truth."
"If you really care about me, then tell me what you actually feel. Okay?"
A portal opened behind her.
Claire stepped through.
The Eredar Twins smiled brightly and waved goodbye.
"Bye!"
They looked like they were seeing off an old friend.
The portal vanished.
Evenson stared at the empty space for several seconds before turning toward the twins.
He looked annoyed.
Very annoyed.
But in the end, he could only sigh and let it go.
Because who was he to blame anyone else?
He was the one most responsible for this mess.
He loved Claire.
At the same time, he had feelings for the Eredar Twins that he’d never quite been willing to define.
At first, he’d been able to tell himself that Claire had simply left first, that everything afterward was a misunderstanding, that none of it really counted.
But once the truth had been dragged into the open, he’d still refused to choose.
He’d wanted everything.
He’d selfishly hoped he could keep both sides of his life exactly as they were.
Now there was nowhere left to hide.
"It was my fault."
Evenson lowered his head.
This time, there was no clever wording.
No evasive excuse.
No sweet-talking.
He meant it.
"But you two..."
He rubbed the back of his neck, struggling to find the right words.
"You didn’t exactly have to say it like that. Some of those things were..."
"Too harsh?"
Aurecess raised an eyebrow.
"I think it’s time we clarified our relationship."
Salorass took over.
"We’re Eredar demons."
"We aren’t going to behave like delicate little flowers who curl up in your arms and compete for your attention."
Her voice carried the authority of a queen.
"Selfishness is part of our nature. And the thing we hate most is sharing."
She stepped closer and poked Evenson in the chest with one finger.
"If something belongs to us, we don’t allow anyone else to touch it."
Her eyes narrowed.
"You belong to us."
Evenson grimaced.
Aurecess watched his expression and smiled.
"If you’re unhappy with that arrangement and want us to change, that’s impossible."
She paused.
"Unless..."
Her smile became sharper.
"You can tame us."
"Turn the relationship around until we’re the ones who belong to you."
"Which is why we’ve already told you that’s impossible."
Salorass spread her hands.
"Sargeras couldn’t do it."
"The Burning Legion couldn’t do it."
"Even those damned warlocks of the Black Harvest couldn’t do it."
"They had enough power to make us fear them. They had spells capable of forcing us under their control."
She laughed softly.
"But we never truly submitted."
Aurecess’s eyes narrowed.
"So..."
She looked Evenson up and down.
"You don’t even have a mentor, little warlock."
Her smile turned playful.
"Do you want to try?"
Evenson stared at them.
"That’s certainly one hell of a challenge..."
People said women were unpredictable.
The Eredar Twins took that concept and turned it into an art form.
Long before they became demons, they’d joined the Awakening and flirted with the Burning Legion.
They’d never been particularly loyal to the Legion, though.
When the Black Harvest eventually captured them, they had no problem selling out their former allies and becoming the council’s enforcers.
And they weren’t exactly devoted to the Black Harvest either.
The moment Evenson summoned them and gave them a chance to escape, they’d left without hesitation.
They had never truly given themselves to anyone.
Not a person.
Not a faction.
Not even the most powerful forces in the universe.
And yet...
"I want to try."
Evenson’s expression hardened with determination.
Where he’d found the confidence to say it, even he wasn’t entirely sure.
For one glorious moment, he looked like he’d stepped straight out of some absurd heroic fantasy.
The Eredar Twins remained outwardly calm.
Inside, however, both felt their emotions stir.
There were two possible outcomes.
Either this arrogant little warlock would discover just how far above his station he’d reached, fail miserably, and howl in despair.
Or...
He might actually become someone capable of making them willingly submit.
Either possibility was fascinating.
"We’ll look forward to seeing what you can do."
Salorass licked her lips.
"But enough of the heavy stuff."
Her expression brightened.
"Let’s talk about something more pleasant."
"The task we were assigned has gone extremely well."
"Gennos’s assistant?"
Evenson composed himself and thought back to before he’d left.
The twins had been searching for someone suitable to work alongside Gennos.
"We found the candidates."
Salorass smiled.
"They aren’t here yet, but we know exactly who we’re after."
"Their circumstances are ideal. They don’t have complicated backgrounds, and with a little persuasion, they’ll be willing to come work for us."
She smiled innocently.
"They’ll also be very easy to control."
Evenson frowned.
"People like that actually exist?"
Gennos’s technology was effectively the heart of Umbrella’s technological development.
There was no way they could casually hand that kind of information to someone with a complicated or questionable background.
But Gennos didn’t need a janitor or a warehouse worker.
He needed a genuine assistant.
Someone highly educated.
Someone intelligent enough to understand his work.
Fresh university graduates wouldn’t be sufficient, but the people who actually possessed that level of knowledge were usually already employed somewhere.
Whether they volunteered to leave or the twins poached them through less-than-ethical means, neither option exactly inspired confidence.
Aurecess smiled.
"We think things through more thoroughly than you do."
"The people we selected aren’t famous."
"In fact, their education is only slightly better than yours."
Evenson stared at her.
"That’s not a very high bar."
"But they’re absolutely perfect for the job."
"Who are they?"
Evenson asked curiously.
Salorass smiled.
"The first one..."
She paused.
"...is a sanitation worker."
Evenson blinked.
"A sanitation worker?"
"Yes."
Salorass’s smile widened.
"Someone who needs to put food on the table."
