Mephisto was so frustrated he felt like he might actually cough up blood.
It was like finally getting an interview with a famous stage performer, only for the reporter to spend the entire conversation mocking other actors for being vulgar, pandering, and obsessed with cheap spectacle, while insisting that only true talent and genuine craft mattered.
Then, after all that, the reporter casually added:
Actually, I was looking for that other guy. I just wanted you to introduce us.
Mephisto swallowed the irritation burning in his throat and forced a smile.
He turned toward the Eredar Twins.
"Would you two mind if someone else beat him up every once in a while?"
At this point, even Mephisto’s considerable self-control had its limits.
"I wouldn’t count on it."
Salora casually draped one arm across Evenson’s shoulders while Aureseus hooked an arm around his other side.
"He’s our personal stress-relief device."
Mephisto made a series of furious noises under his breath.
It took him a while to calm down.
Eventually, he looked back at Evenson.
"With the amount of knowledge you possess, you’re obviously not one of those superficial lunatics. So why are you suddenly interested in something as strange as Lucifer?"
"Strange?"
Evenson’s eyebrow twitched.
He ignored the comment.
"Let me start with the basics. Lucifer was originally an angel, rebelled against God, and was cast out of Heaven to rule Hell for eternity. Is that actually true?"
"Complete nonsense!"
Mephisto immediately straightened.
"Absolute rubbish."
Evenson blinked.
"Heaven and Hell are entirely separate realms. God has no authority over us, and we have no subordinate relationship with him."
He snorted.
"So how exactly would he appoint the ruler of Hell?"
Evenson didn’t comment.
"But the Bible and virtually every human culture seem to tell the story differently."
"Marketing."
Mephisto waved a hand dismissively.
"It’s a useful marketing strategy."
"It makes Hell sound terrifying and powerful while making God seem even more omnipotent. After all, if he can casually appoint the ruler of Hell, what can’t he do?"
He rolled his eyes.
"That’s exactly the sort of self-promotion you use to make frightened people believe only faith in God can save them from eternal torment."
Mephisto looked almost offended by the idea.
"There’s nothing particularly impressive about it."
He paused.
"Actually, I wrote a book of my own once."
Evenson’s expression went blank.
"In Hell, naturally."
Mephisto smiled proudly.
"I claimed that God was actually a rebellious devil who was kicked out of Hell by me and punished by being forced to rule Heaven forever."
He shrugged.
"If you’re going to make things up about yourself, why should I let someone else have all the fun?"
So the underworld has competing propaganda departments.
Evenson wasn’t sure whether that made things more absurd or less.
"Then..."
It took him a moment to process all the information he’d just received.
"What exactly is Lucifer’s position in Hell?"
Mephisto looked at him.
"Do you know what 666 means?"
"I do."
Evenson frowned.
"But I’m fairly sure my interpretation isn’t the same as yours."
"Six hundred and sixty-six is the number associated with Hell."
Mephisto held up his fingers as though lecturing.
"The six major lords. The six major realms."
He paused.
"And the final six is essentially there because the number sounds better."
Evenson stared.
"In the beginning, Hell had only six lords."
"No Lucifer."
"So he came later."
Evenson nodded.
"But what I’m really interested in is this: is Lucifer actually a fallen angel?"
The moment he asked, the Eredar Twins lost their usual teasing smiles.
They became completely serious.
Both waited for Mephisto’s answer.
Mephisto noticed immediately.
His expression changed.
Interesting.
"That answer seems rather important to all three of you."
He smiled.
"In that case, I don’t think I should give it away for free."
Evenson gave a cold little laugh.
"Of course."
He expected nothing less from the Devil.
"What do you want?"
He considered the soul they had just been discussing.
"Would the priest’s soul be enough?"
"No."
Mephisto waved the suggestion away.
"That soul isn’t important to me."
He smiled.
"I’m giving you information. It seems only fair that you give me information in return."
"What kind of information?"
"From the question you’re asking, you clearly know what angels are."
Mephisto studied him closely.
"And it seems you know quite a lot about them."
His eyes narrowed.
"Perhaps even more than I do."
"I get it."
Evenson understood immediately.
"Fine. I’ll give you what I know about these beings."
He raised one finger.
"But only after you answer my question."
He leaned closer.
"Is Lucifer a fallen angel?"
"Strictly speaking..."
Mephisto smiled faintly.
"No."
Evenson’s expression tightened.
"What does that mean?"
"That he didn’t fall?"
"Or that he isn’t an angel?"
"Chronologically and logically speaking."
Mephisto folded his arms.
"Lucifer’s physical structure is indeed extremely similar to that of the angels."
"However, he controls a completely opposite form of energy."
"I couldn’t tell you whether that qualifies as falling."
He shrugged.
"But Lucifer entered Hell first."
"About two hundred years later, angels appeared in Heaven."
Evenson’s eyes widened slightly.
"So even if Lucifer could technically be considered fallen, his existence predates the very concept of angels."
"By definition, he can’t really be a fallen angel."
Evenson exchanged a glance with the Eredar Twins.
They were thinking the same thing.
The realization was becoming unavoidable.
Lucifer was almost certainly a Naaru.
And somehow, for reasons they still didn’t understand, he had entered a Shadow-aligned state.
Whether it was a natural transformation or the result of some external event remained unclear.
But now they had another problem.
"Then Lucifer must be extremely powerful."
Evenson frowned.
"He managed to force the other six Lords of Hell to acknowledge him as one of them."
Even human rulers were often violently protective of their territories.
Hell was no different.
Yet Lucifer, despite arriving later than the original six, had somehow established himself as the seventh Lord.
Evenson couldn’t help wondering just how powerful that made him.
"I honestly couldn’t tell you."
Mephisto shook his head.
"We’ve never fought."
Evenson stared.
"You’ve never fought?"
That answer genuinely surprised him.
So Lucifer became the seventh Lord without ever fighting the others?
What happened? Did Hell hold an election?
Has the underworld secretly become democratic?
"Space in Hell is effectively infinite."
Mephisto shrugged.
"When Lucifer first appeared, the region he settled in happened to be an undeveloped wasteland with no established claim."
"And he didn’t exactly look easy to deal with."
"So none of us were particularly interested in mobilizing forces just to provoke him."
Mephisto’s mouth twitched.
"Or, more honestly..."
He gave Evenson a very candid look.
"Our original plan was to wait."
"Let the newcomer develop the territory."
"Once he’d invested enough effort into it, the six of us would join forces and divide it among ourselves."
Evenson’s eyes narrowed.
"But you never got around to that plan."
"No."
"Because he never developed the territory."
"Exactly."
Mephisto spread his hands.
"That’s why I said there’s something wrong with him."
"Developing your territory is how you attract more souls. The more influence you build, the more souls naturally end up in your domain."
He shook his head.
"But Lucifer hasn’t changed anything."
"More than two thousand years have passed."
"His territory still looks exactly the way it did when he arrived."
Evenson’s expression became thoughtful.
"Even so, a few souls must still end up there."
He looked directly at Mephisto.
"Those souls..."
"Are they okay?"
