Soulless Soul

Chapter 32: Dark Unknown

Chapter 32: Dark Unknown

Sky didn’t panic. His mind, honed by weeks of brutal, unrelenting survival in the dungeon realm, went icy cold, completely detaching from the frantic racing of his pulse. This was the cold clarity brought on by his Passive Attribute: [Danger Sense]. The skill didn’t just warn him of oncoming danger; it seemed to slow his perception of time down to a crawl, turning the chaotic frenzy of the battlefield into a series of predictable, linear vectors. The red trajectory lines drawn by the System’s interface solidified in his vision, mapping out the exact paths the rusted lead bullets would take through the damp air.

He pivoted his heel with practiced precision, twisting his upper body at an angle that defied the awkwardness of the mossy cobblestones. The first bullet hissed past, grazing the dark, frayed fabric of his hood and leaving behind a faint smell of burnt cloth, but leaving his flesh untouched.

The second shot, however, was tracking true to his chest. Instead of trying to dodge a bullet that had already closed the distance, Sky brought his weapon up in a snapping, defensive guard. He deflected the second shot with the flat of his Blood Blade.

Clang!

The collision of lead against enchanted cold iron produced a sharp, metallic ring that echoed violently off the cavern walls. The sheer kinetic impact sent a jarring shockwave straight up his forearm, vibrating through his elbow and making his shoulder tighten. The force of the blow was registered by the unforgiving logic of the System. In the upper corner of his vision, his status bar reacted instantly. His Armor bar flickered violently, dropping from 5 to 4.

"Too slow," Sky hissed, his voice low and raspy against the damp silence of the room. He didn’t care about the minor dent in his defenses; the deflection had bought him the single second of positioning he needed to turn the tables on his ambushers.

He focused his gaze entirely on the floor, specifically on the pool of ink-black shadow stretching beneath his heavy boots, cast by the eerie, pulsating blue light of the subterranean trees. The System responded immediately to his lethal intent, acknowledging the mental command before he could even vocalize it. A heavy, familiar drain pulled at his core, drawing a massive chunk of his Energy reserves in a single, sudden spike.

[Active Attribute: DARK BLADE]

The world around him lost its color, shifting into a monochromatic blur. Sky’s physical body dissolved entirely, melting into a streak of pure, formless shadow that bled directly into the ground. For a split second, he was entirely incorporeal, untethered from the physical laws of the dungeon and immune to reality itself. He became a blur of midnight crossing the cobblestones, an invisible predator cutting through the fog. He moved so fast that the atmospheric pressure changed instantly, causing the air to crack and pop behind him like a small sonic boom.

Before the three spear-wielding goblins could even register that their target had vanished from their sights, the shadow reeled upward, solidifying back into a human form. He reappeared directly behind the two goblin riflemen, who were still frantically trying to clear the black powder smoke from their rusted pistols.

With a brutal, clean arc, the Blood Blade flashed in the dim, bioluminescent light. The movement was born of muscle memory and desperate practice. The crimson edge of the sword cleaved through the damp air and flesh with terrifying ease, the dark energy of his attribute amplifying the sharpness of the iron. The two goblins didn’t even have time to shriek or turn around. The moment the edge passed through them, their bodies stiffened, fractured into jagged lines, and dissolved into pixels of black smoke. They left behind nothing but a brief scattering of glowing blue energy particles and a couple of shiny, metallic shards that clattered onto the stone floor.

The rush of reclaimed power surged through his veins, completely refilling his reservoir and wiping away the immediate fatigue of the skill’s activation. Sky didn’t waste a single breath or allow his momentum to stall. The internal cooldown of his ability shattered as the system logged the kills, and he spun on his heel with fluid grace.

Using the residual momentum of the skill’s reset, he plunged straight back into the shadows. He became a traveling vortex of darkness once more, dashing forward and weaving directly through the remaining three spear-wielders who had just begun to turn back toward him. Three distinct, blinding crimson flashes illuminated the fog in rapid succession.

Within three seconds, the room fell dead silent.

The remaining creatures stiffened, their crude wooden spears slipping from their lifeless fingers before they, too, burst into clouds of dark pixels and faded into the ether. The oppressive atmosphere of the encounter evaporated. The harsh, red runes carved into the stone walls lost their aggressive glow, fading rapidly and shifting back to a calm, passive blue that indicated a cleared zone. Across the room, the heavy exit archway shuddered, grinding open with a slow, mechanical groan that revealed the dark, twisting path leading down into the next chamber of tye next room.

Sky leaned his shoulder heavily against a nearby glowing tree trunk, his chest heaving as he forced his breathing back into a steady, controlled rhythm. He watched his Energy bar tick back up to its maximum value, ensuring his resources were fully stabilized before he moved an inch. He looked down at the floor where the creatures had vanished, counting the small, glowing fragments left in their wake.

"Five gems for five goblins," Sky muttered, a dry, cynical smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "At this rate, I’ll be able to afford a single health potion from the Trader in three days. Assuming I don’t run into anything worse than a scout squad."

It was a pathetic yield for a life-or-death struggle, but in the Royal Rumble, you learned to value every single scrap. He reached down, swiping his hand over the floor to automatically collect the dropped fragments, watching his inventory count adjust. Kneeling for a brief moment, he used a piece of discarded moss to wipe the oily, dark goblin residue off the gleaming edge of his blade, ensuring the weapon was clean and ready for the next strike. He stood up, adjusted the grip on his crimson hilt, and stepped through the open doorway into the dark unknown.
