Chapter 33: The Vanguard’s Radiance

Chapter 33: The Vanguard’s Radiance

The Goblin Chieftain roared, a deafening, guttural sound that shook dust, broken stone, and loose moss from the cavern ceiling far above. The massive creature stood twice the height of an ordinary human, its skin a dark, mottled grey, and its muscles bulging with unnatural strength. It swung its massive, barbed-wire club in a wide, horizontal arc aimed directly at Sky’s upper body. The sheer wind pressure generated by the attack was immense, whistling through the damp air and forcing Sky to drop low to the cold cobblestones. His crimson scarf whipped wildly around his face as the spiked iron bar passed mere inches above his head, shaving a fraction of a second off his reaction time.

Recovering his footing, Sky braced himself for a brutal, defensive retreat. He expected Vesper to lift her ornate wooden staff from the rear, channel her remaining mana, and cast a defensive barrier from afar to absorb the Chieftain’s follow-up strikes. That was the standard protocol for an auxiliary class in the lower sectors

.

Instead, she did something that made Sky’s breath catch tightly in his throat.

With a swift, practiced twist of her hands, Vesper unscrewed the top half of her ornate wooden staff. A sharp, mechanical click echoed clearly through the cavern chamber, cutting through the echoes of the monster’s roar. The heavy, dark timber casing split open and fell away, clattering harmlessly onto the wet stone. The discarded wood revealed that the hidden core of her staff was actually a beautifully forged, double-edged broadsword made of gleaming silver steel. The golden cross that previously capped the staff remained perfectly intact as the weapon’s pommel, pulsing with a fierce, blinding radiance that cut through the thick subterranean fog.

This was no ordinary catalyst; this was a weapon called the Holy Scepter Blade, an elite-tier hybrid armaments cache rarely seen in the hands of common awakened.

"Clear the flanks, Skies," she repeated calmly, her voice entirely devoid of panic despite the towering behemoth breathing down their necks.

Before the Chieftain could recover its balance from the missed horizontal swing, Vesper lunged forward. Her movements weren’t clumsy, hesitant, or weighed down by the heavy, layered fabric of her ceremonial robes. Instead, she moved with the terrifying, fluid grace of a high-born knight who had spent lifetimes practicing the art of the blade. She gripped the leather-wrapped hilt with both hands, channeling a surge of radiant energy into the steel, and brought the blade down in a crushing overhead strike.

Clang!

The heavy iron armor bolted onto the Chieftain’s right shoulder buckled violently under the impact, the metal tearing open like parchment. A shockwave of pure, white kinetic light exploded outward from the point of contact, illuminating the entire chamber in a harsh flash. The sheer concussive force of the holy strike blasted the giant monster back two full steps, its massive boots skidding across the mossy floor as it fought to stay upright.

"What a monster," Sky muttered, a grim, self-deprecating smirk forming beneath his hood.

She wasn’t just a fragile priestess sitting safely in the back lines, tossing out healing spells and minor buffs; she was a frontline vanguard who used high-density holy magic to fuel her physical destruction. She was a self-contained assault unit.

But the Chieftain wasn’t fighting alone. From the cracked earth and jagged shadows behind the boss, a dozen Goblin Spearmen materialized out of the darkness, their small, nimble bodies twitching with feral energy. They carried long, uneven pikes, their tips glowing with a toxic, bubbling green poison that hissed upon contact with the damp air. Seeing their leader pushed back, the squad rushed forward in a frantic, uncoordinated surge, aiming their weapons directly toward Vesper’s exposed back.

"Don’t forget about the small fry!" Sky shouted, his voice cracking against the noise of the battle

.

He didn’t wait for her response. Sky focused his intent entirely on the darkness stretching out from the edges of the room, using the shadows cast by Vesper’s brilliant light against his enemies. His Energy bar drained rapidly as he stepped off the physical plane, the familiar icy chill of the system taking hold of his muscles.

[Active Attribute: DARK BLADE]

Sky became a streak of midnight, a silent, formless phantom cutting through the chaotic battlefield. He zipped past Vesper’s right side, deliberately steering clear of the ambient golden glow radiating from her body. The heat of her holy energy felt like liquid fire against his skin, a burning presence that threatened to forcefully disrupt his stealth and cancel his invisibility if he drew too close. He skirted the outer edge of her aura, utilizing the deep shadows near the cavern walls to mask his trajectory.

He reappeared seamlessly in the dead center of the approaching spear-wielders.

Slash. Slash. Rip.

The Blood Blade left jagged, trailing arcs of crimson light in the dim, foggy air. Sky moved like a localized whirlwind, his feet gliding across the cobblestones as he used the momentum of his skill’s reset to chain three consecutive shadow dashes back-to-back. Three goblins fell in rapid succession, their throats torn open before they could even pivot their weapons. Their bodies instantly fractured and dissolved into glowing blue energy particles that flew straight into Sky’s chest, refilling his reserves as the System processed the kills.

"Two more on your left!" Vesper called out, not looking back for even a fraction of a second as she parried a devastating, downward swing from the Chieftain’s heavy wire club.

The weight of the impact forced her knees to bend, the ancient cobblestones cracking and fracturing beneath her boots under the transferred kinetic force. Despite the immense pressure, her face remained an emotionless mask of pure, unyielding determination. She held the line, her Holy Scepter Blade grinding against the rusted iron of the club, locking the boss in place.

Sky spun on his heel, dodging a lunging spear by mere millimeters as the poisoned tip grazed the air beside his throat. He sliced the attacker’s neck in a single fluid counter-stroke, then immediately threw his body into a hard, desperate roll across the uneven floor.

Bang! Bang!

A barrage of rusted bullets from a goblin rifleman hiding deep in the perimeter bushes tore through the space he had occupied a millisecond prior. The trajectory predictor flashed a stark, warning crimson across his vision, but the sheer volume of fire was too dense to evade completely. A stray piece of shrapnel from a ricochet caught him across the shoulder.

His Armor bar flashed critically in the corner of his eye: 1/5.

The protective field surrounding his gear was completely spent, leaving him entirely vulnerable. One more clean hit from any weapon, and his actual flesh would take the damage.
