Soulless Soul

Chapter 40: Gathering Storm

Chapter 40: Gathering Storm

The progression through the next two sectors was a relentless, grueling war of attrition. The dungeon realm was actively fighting back, realizing that Sky and Vesper were clearing rooms significantly faster than the baseline algorithm intended. The architecture of the trial was warping in real time around them, shifting shapes and rewriting its internal code to suppress their advance. There were no moments of rest, no quiet corridors to catch their breath. Every single chamber they entered immediately slammed its heavy stone gates shut, forcing them into a high-stakes arena against waves of increasingly aggressive denizens.

By Floor 1-4, the environment had become a chaotic, hellish hybrid of the Forest and Glacier biomes. It was a localized ecological nightmare. Massive roots made of solid, unyielding ice twisted like frozen serpents through the shattered stone walls, tearing the ancient masonry apart. The lush, bioluminescent blue foliage from the first floor had frozen over, its glowing leaves now sharp as glass and shattering into lethal needles whenever a projectile strayed too close.

The enemies they faced were no longer simple scouts or basic mechanical units; they were mutated, horrific amalgams designed specifically to counter common combat archetypes. Goblins clad in crude leather and rusted iron armor now marched forward wielding high-velocity frost rifles that shot pressurized shards of icicles. Alongside them charged massive Elite Boars, creatures twice the size of a standard beast, completely covered in thick sheets of crystalline armor that effortlessly deflected baseline physical strikes.

Sky’s Armor bar was constantly hovering in the critical red zone, flashing a warning signal that never seemed to clear. His leather tunic was torn to ribbons along his flank, and a deep, jagged gash on his left shoulder was sluggishly bleeding, leaking vital code as his HP bar sat precariously at 3/5. His vision swam with minor static every time he tried to push his physical limits on the slippery terrain.

"Your pacing is slowing down, Skies," Vesper remarked as they rested briefly in a narrow, unlit transition corridor.

She was currently using her [Holy Prayer] skill to systematically patch up a severe frostbite burn on her own left forearm. The brilliant golden light of her matrix cast long, dancing shadows against the jagged ice walls of the tunnel, providing a brief, deceptive illusion of safety. Despite the grueling climb, her posture remained uncomfortably regal, her silver blade resting across her lap like a sceptre.

"I’m an Assassin, not a perpetual motion machine," Sky snapped, leaning the back of his head heavily against the frozen rock behind him.

He didn’t bother to wipe the sweat that was freezing instantly on his brow. "My energy reserves are capping out. Every single time I activate [Dark Blade], the internal systemic drainage takes longer to naturally recover. The System isn’t just throwing tougher mobs at us—it’s actively throttling my passive regeneration rates."

"That’s because of the severe sector corruption," Chloe’s voice intervened suddenly.

Her holographic display snapped into existence, but the projection was flickering violently now, distorted by heavy waves of ambient electromagnetic interference. "The massive energy Stone located at the very end of this floor is leaking raw, unrefined data into the local environment. It’s creating a highly localized suppression field that specifically targets high-mobility, shadow-aligned classes. Skies, if you keep blindly spamming your core skill in this zone, your spiritual core might suffer a permanent structural desync. If that happens, the system won’t recognize your physical body anymore."

Sky looked down at his trembling right hand, his fingers tightly clamped around the coarse leather wrapping of his weapon. The Blood Blade felt significantly heavier than usual, the crimson hilt pulsing with a sluggish, erratic light that mirrored his own erratic heartbeat.

"So what’s the play, Chloe? I can’t just fight these things head-on. One solid, unmitigated hit from an Elite variant will shatter my remaining health permanently," Sky muttered, his voice hollow as he stared into the dark abyss of the next chamber.

"The field is dense, but it has blind spots," Chloe’s digital voice crackled through the interference, her visor data mapping out the spatial anomalies. "The suppression field operates on a rhythmic pulse. Every time the Magic Stone draws power to cycle the dungeon’s defensive grid, the field drops for exactly two seconds. If you time your entries perfectly with the core’s ventilation cycle, you can bypass the regeneration throttle entirely."

Vesper stood up, the golden light around her arm dissipating as her flesh knit itself back together. She looked down at Sky, her cool gray eyes entirely devoid of sympathy but filled with a pragmatic evaluation of his combat worth.

"I will act as the anchor," Vesper stated, her hand twisting the hilt of her Holy Scepter Blade until the mechanical locks clicked into place. "The Elite Boars respond to high-density magical output. I will draw their aggression by amplifying my holy aura. When they charge me, their rear flanks will be entirely exposed to the blind spots of the field. That is your window, Skies."

"And if your guard breaks?" Sky asked, pushing himself up from the frozen stone, his muscles groaning in protest as he forced his body back into a combat stance. "If those crystalline husks run you over, I’m left out in the open with no armor."

"My guard does not break," Vesper replied flatly, her voice carrying an absolute, terrifying certainty that left no room for argument. She turned toward the dark exit of the transition corridor, her white cloak cutting through the rising fog like a shroud. "Prepare your attributes. The Gatekeeper’s chamber is right behind this threshold, and the system is already initiating the sealing sequence."

Sky took a deep breath, forcing the cold air into his burning lungs. He adjusted his crimson scarf, feeling the subtle, rhythmic hum of his [Dragon Heart] trying its absolute best to stabilize his erratic energy levels against the dungeon’s suppression field. He checked his status screen one last time: HP: 3/5, Armor: 1/5 after the minor passive regeneration of the safe zone. It was a pathetic pool of resources to bring into a boss fight, but in the unmapped depths of Floor 1-4, numbers were a luxury he couldn’t afford to obsess over.

He stepped out of the shadows of the corridor, aligning himself just behind Vesper’s left shoulder as the massive, frozen vault doors of the Gatekeeper’s arena began to grind open with a deafening, metallic shriek. The gathering storm was finally upon them.
