Chapter 49: The Saboteur in the Snow

Chapter 49: The Saboteur in the Snow

The temperature on Floor 1-4 didn’t just freeze the skin; it froze the air inside your lungs. Every breath taken in this hostile environment felt like inhaling thousands of microscopic shards of glass, a sensation that actively burned the chest and threatened to disrupt the focus of any unadapted player.

When Sky and Vesper stepped through the portal, the structural code of the Dungeon realm seemed to be actively fracturing around them in real time. The walls of the corridor were no longer smooth, uniform stone; they had warped into a chaotic, glitching grid of glowing white ice and pixelated, twisted tree roots that hummed with a low, distressing frequency. The visual static was so intense that the boundaries between the physical layout and the digital framework of the system were beginning to blur.

The translucent interface in Sky’s peripheral vision flickered wildly, the text lines rendering in sharp, aggressive crimson blocks instead of their usual calm blue:

[CURRENT FLOOR: 1-4 (THE FROZEN ARCHIVES)]

[HAZARD DETECTED: SECTOR DEVIATION 14%]

[WARNING: REGEN RATIOS THROTTLED TO 50%]

"This place is suffocating us," Sky rasped, his voice sounding muffled and hollow as he pulled his crimson scarf higher over his nose to filter out the freezing moisture.

He adjusted the heavy, reinforced leather straps of his new Repeating Crossbow on his left forearm, making sure the mount was secure enough to handle high-velocity movement . The matte-black weapon felt solid and dense, a reassuring and deadly weight against the howling, freezing wind that threatened to knock him off balance on the slick cobblestones. "Even my passive energy trickle is crawling right now. The suppression field from the gem Stone is getting tighter. If we get into a prolonged brawl in the next few chambers, we’re going to run completely dry before we even see the boss."

Crazy Hope didn’t answer him immediately. She stood a few paces ahead of him, her posture rigid and unyielding as her long silver hair whipped wildly in the artificial blizzard swirling through the cavern corridor. Without a word of hesitation, she drew her newly evolved Sacred Light-Saber from its sleek carbon-fiber sheath.

The weapon didn’t look like a standard fantasy blade anymore; the emerald circuitry runes etched deep into the silver steel flared brilliantly to life, generating a thin, high-frequency hum that vibrated the very air around her. The intense, concentrated thermal energy radiating from the edge instantly melted the heavy snow falling around her hands, turning the frost into puffs of white steam before it could even touch her pristine robes.

"Then we simply don’t let it become a prolonged brawl," Vesper said, her piercing gray eyes locked onto the dark, twisting icy tunnel ahead with absolute, unwavering conviction. "We march directly to the high-security vault room, strike down the Elite Grand Knight guarding the threshold, take the final fragment, and leave this place. Arthur’s twenty-four-hour clock is ticking down, and I have no intention of letting our physical bodies rot in the cages."

Bzzzt... Skies... do you... copy?

Chloe’s voice crackled suddenly through the localized link, heavily muffled by thick layers of acoustic static and distortion. The three-dimensional holographic map she usually projected next to Sky’s shoulder failed to materialize entirely, replaced instead by a fragmented, sparking line of code that struggled to maintain structural integrity. It was clear that the data stream from the Living Room hub was losing its connection speed the deeper they descended into the corrupted sector.

"I hear you, Chloe," Sky muttered, tapping the metallic side of his earpiece to stabilize the audio frequency. "Pacing is bad down here. The UI is lagging by at least a fraction of a second, and the terrain is actively rewriting itself. What do your scanners say about the path ahead?"

"The... bzzzt... deviation is accelerating," Chloe’s voice returned, the signal cutting out momentarily before stabilizing just enough to understand her words. "The system has completely inverted the room layout to protect the vault. The path you are standing in is currently being mined by automated traps. Look down, Skies! The system isn’t just throttling your traits—it’s trying to drop the ceiling on you!"

Sky immediately focused his gaze onto the floor tiles directly ahead of Vesper’s boots. Enhanced by his [Danger Sense] attribute, the faint red trajectory lines coursing through his vision suddenly flared into an aggressive, pulsing violet. Embedded deep within the ice-covered cobblestones were micro-thin tripwires made of raw, compressed magic energy, connected to heavy, crystalline stalactites hanging precariously from the ceiling above like rows of giant teeth.

"Vesper, hold your position," Sky hissed, his hand snapping out to catch her shoulder before she could take another step forward. "The entire tunnel is wired. One wrong step and we’ll be crushed under a thousand pounds of solid ice before the grand knight even knows we’re here." Crazy Hope paused, her blade held low as her gray eyes scanned the frozen matrix of traps. "Can you bypass them, Skies? We don’t have the time to find an alternate route through the biomes."

"Bypassing is what I do best," Sky said, a grim, confident smirk forming beneath the dark fabric of his scarf as he leveled his left forearm. He focused his eyes on the primary mechanical junction box hidden behind a thick sheet of ice along the left wall—the central nerve center controlling the tripwires.

He raised his right hand, checking the integrated crimson laser sight of his new Repeating Crossbow. The red dot painted itself precisely onto the core of the ice-covered junction box. Sky didn’t need to submerge into his shadow form yet; he needed to see exactly how much structural damage his new gear could dish out on the environment.

"Let’s see what this new this new toy can shred," Sky murmured, his finger tightening around the mechanical trigger mechanism.

Thwip! Thwip! Thwip!

The crossbow released a rapid, deafening burst of three steel-tipped projectiles, the internal clockwork gears clicking with flawless precision. The bolts tore through the freezing air, driven by the overclocked firing mechanism Chloe had engineered from Arthur’s high-grade iron .

The first projectile slammed directly into the outer layer of ice, shattering it into a cloud of sparkling frost shards. The second and third bolts punched straight through the iron casing of the junction box, severing the compressed magic wires inside with a violent hiss of escaping energy.

The glowing red tripwires snaked along the cobblestones flickered out of existence instantly, the system logging the hazard as disabled. Far above, the heavy stalactites remained anchored to the ceiling, their lethal trap parameters forcefully overridden by the physical destruction of their network

[HAZARD CLEARED]

[ENERGY CONSUMPTION: -2]

[CURRENT ENERGY: 98/100]

Sky ran his fingers over the cold black metal of the crossbow, a genuine sense of lethal satisfaction washing over his mind. The weapon didn’t just deal raw damage; it was clean, efficient, and perfectly tuned to his calculated combat style. He looked back at Vesper, who had watched the entire sequence with a neutral, calculating expression.

"The path is clear, Priestess," Sky said, shifting his grip on his Blood Blade as he took the lead. "Keep your light-saber ready. If the automated traps are this aggressive, the Elite Grand Knight at the end of this tunnel isn’t going to roll over easily ."

Vesper stepped into line just behind his right shoulder, her white carbon-fiber sheath clicking against her belt as they advanced deeper into the freezing darkness of the Frozen Archives. The static in Sky’s head continued to buzz, but the cold weight of their new weapons reminded them that they were no longer prey—they were the saboteurs in the snow, and the vault was within their grasp.
