Chapter 50: The Shadow of Treachery
"I’m looking at... a massive anomaly on the grid," Chloe warned over the link which was made possiblebecauseof her attributes, her voice cutting sharply through a harsh wave of digital white noise that made the connection sputter and crackle. The interference was thick, distorted by the deepening corruption of the sector. "The portal tracking log... someone else registered an active deployment token exactly four seconds after you two stepped through the vortex. It’s a verified security signature originating directly from the Vanguard Order."
Sky froze in his tracks, his heavy boots skidding a millimeter before anchoring firmly into the ice. His left thumb automatically hovered over the mechanical trigger of his new Repeating Crossbow, his body posture instantly tightening into a coiled spring. The cold air grew static around him. "Arthur? Did that hypocrite break the treaty already before the ink could even dry? He sat there and took my data chip while planning to stab us in the dark?" "Not Arthur," Chloe’s voice grew desperate, the static on her end intensifying as she frantically tried to recalibrate her monitoring terminal back in the lodge, her keyboard clacking furiously over the transmission. "It’s his lead tracker... Vanguard Lieutenant Colton.
He’s running a high-tier stealth-shroud buff that’s masking his heat signature. I can’t pin his exact coordinates on my map layout, but the server log confirms he’s already inside your specific instance, Skies. He’s hunting you from behind, using your cleared path to mask his advance and avoid tripping any of the floor’s remaining perimeter alarms."
"That bastard," Sky hissed, his voice a low, dangerous rumble beneath the dark fabric of his crimson scarf.
His mind, sharp, cynical, and calculating like a cornered stray dog fighting for a scrap of meat, immediately began running through the tactical angles. The political theater at the Forge Table suddenly made complete sense. Arthur never had any intention of playing fair or letting an independent operator dictate terms to the Vanguard Order. The Paladin didn’t want to risk Sky keeping the incredibly rare Meat Grinder blueprint after the floor clear, or worse, trading the finished data to a rival faction like the Knights.
Colton wasn’t deployed down here to offer ranged support or act as a defensive anchor for the upcoming raid. He was acting as a state-sanctioned assassin. The directive was simple, brutal, and efficient: let Sky and Vesper do all the heavy lifting, expend their precious energy reserves against the Vault Guardian, and then execute them in their weakened, post-battle state. The Vanguard Order would walk away with the completed green-tier weapon blueprint, their monopoly intact, and two independent liabilities permanently wiped from the server repository. They would frame it as a tragic dungeon casualty.
"We change the strategy immediately," Sky said, shifting his weight as he looked over at Vesper, his eyes narrowing through the static of his digital visor. "We have a tail. Colton is right behind us."
Vesper’s serene expression didn’t change a single fraction of a millimeter, her pristine porcelain face remaining an emotionless mask of cold determination amidst the swirling artificial blizzard. She stood perfectly upright, an island of calm in the freezing gale. However, the bright emerald hum radiating from the circuitry runes of her upgraded blade grew slightly sharper, the white carbon-fiber sheath pulsing with a lethal baseline resonance that hissed against the falling snow.
"Does he truly intend to interfere with the purification of this floor?" Vesper asked, her tone smooth, cutting, and entirely devoid of human panic. To her, Colton wasn’t a terrifying elite tracker; he was an administrative error that needed to be systematically corrected, a small stain on the pristine ledger of their progression path.
"He intends to put a rusted iron sword right through our spines the moment the boss drops and the rewards manifest," Sky said coldly, his fingers tapping a rhythmic, impatient cadence against the grip of his Blood Blade. "We can’t turn back to fight him right now even if we wanted to—the system’s corridor automatically locks and seals behind us after we clear every room. There’s no retrograding. We have to purposefully lure him into the vault chamber with us. Let the environment and the Elite Grand Knight do the dirty work for us."
"Agreed," Crazy Hope said, her voice carrying that absolute, terrifying certainty that made her the perfect vanguard for an assassin. She didn’t question the pragmatism of using a boss monster as an executioner.
She turned away from him without another word, her white robes cutting cleanly through the rising white fog as she began marching down the slick, icy corridor toward the high-security vault threshold. Her Sacred Light-Saber left a faint trail of steam in her wake, melting the falling frost before it could even settle on her shoulders. "Let the shadow follow our footsteps. It will only find its own grave in the dark."
Sky lingered for a fraction of a second, letting his Danger Sense cast a wide net into the frozen tunnel behind them. The prickling sensation at the back of his neck wasn’t a sharp flare of immediate damage, but a slow, cold itch—the telltale sign of an active stealth aura hovering just outside his field of vision. Colton was close, tracking the melted ice and disabled tripwires like a vulture waiting for a carcass to drop, completely unaware that his cloak had been compromised by Chloe’s back-end grid monitoring.
A grim, cynical smile twisted Sky’s lips beneath his scarf. If the Vanguard Order wanted to play dirty in the unmapped sectors of Floor 1-4, he was more than happy to show them why solo operators survived the meat grinder without a gold-rimmed shield to hide behind. He checked his resource bars one final time: HP: 3/5, Energy: 98/100, his new Shadow-Bolt attribute primed and ready on his left forearm.
"Keep your eyes wide open, Lieutenant," Sky whispered into the freezing wind, his form blurring slightly as he picked up his pace to match Vesper’s long, rhythmic strides. "The show is about to start, and you’ve got a front-row seat."
Together, they advanced toward the end of the Frozen Archives, the glittering obsidian walls reflecting the emerald light of their upgraded weapons as the massive door to the Vault Guardian’s arena loomed ahead, ready to entrap both the prey and the hunter alike. The air grew heavier, thick with the scent of ancient dust and stale energy, signaling that the threshold of the final trial was finally upon them.
