Chapter 59: Private Revelations
Late that evening, the far, shadow-drenched corner of the Living Room was completely sealed off by Chloe’s localized security fields, the translucent blue data barriers humming quietly to repel any external espionage devices. For the first very time since they had been forcefully dragged into the Sinking and locked within the Central Sleep Cage, Sky, Vesper, and Chloe sat down together around a quiet, circular wooden table, completely removed from the prying eyes, greedy ambitions, and suffocating politics of the major factions.
A steaming clay pot of tea, brewed meticulously from rare, rejuvenating herbs bought from the hidden black-market stores circle downstairs, sat in the exact center of the table, its earthy aroma providing a brief, artificial oasis of normalcy.
"Your family literally built the foundation of this entire place?" Sky asked, his gravelly, raspy voice cutting through the gentle hum of the security field.
He had completely removed his dark hood and unwrapped his frayed crimson scarf, draping them over the back of his wooden chair. The ambient, flickering firelight from the hearth revealed a sharp, intensely tired adolescent face, marred by deep, dark circles of exhaustion under his eyes—the physical manifestation of a human mind carrying a five-point health bar through a continuous meat grinder. "You never once bothered to mention you were digital royalty, Priestess."
Vesper took a slow, methodical sip of her steaming tea, her piercing gray eyes staring deep into the rising vapor as if tracing old memories written in the code."There is no such thing as royalty when you are trapped in a medically induced coma, Skies." Her voice was smooth, flat, and entirely stripped of self-pity. "My parents and my older brother were among the first thousand infected by the initial surge of the soul array back in the real world. They didn’t understand the uncompromising parameters of the array back then. They foolishly tried to brute-force their way through the lower forest biome without proper armor upgrades, basic resource management, or proper class optimization. They successfully cleared the pioneer path for the rest of you, but the intense mental feedback of the system killed their physical bodies back in the cage." "I’m so incredibly sorry, Vesper," Chloe said softly from across the table, her digital visor clicking and whirring as she automatically adjusted her focal lenses to filter out the glare of the fireplace.
She reached out across the scarred wood, her callused, oil-stained hand finding Vesper’s slender fingers and squeezing them with genuine warmth. "If it wasn’t for the original Valerius structural maps left behind, my technical guild would have never found the Forge Table core matrix in the first place. Your family’s data literally saved tens of thousands of us from having our consciousnesses permanently wiped during the very first week."
"They died leaving a vital job completely unfinished," Vesper stated, her melodic tone hardening into a cold, uncompromising edge as she looked straight at Sky. "The mutated Crystal Crab we are about to face is the primary structural anchor for the entire first-floor array. Until its corrupted kinetic core is thoroughly shattered, the dimensional rifts in the waking world will keep expanding exponentially, and the Central Sleep Cages will eventually suffer a catastrophic power grid collapse. I don’t care about Arthur’s pathetic faction politics, and I certainly don’t care about Colton’s well-deserved death. I only care about finishing what my brother started before our time runs out."
Sky leaned back heavily against the wooden framework of his chair, his fingers idly twirling a heavy, steel-tipped crossbow bolt between his knuckles with fluid dexterity. "We’re a profoundly weird mix for a savior unit, you know," he muttered, a dry, cynical smile tugging at the corner of his lips . "A blind engineer who manages to see the entire universe through raw mechanical code, a fallen noble house heir wielding a high-frequency light-saber, and a common street-rat assassin who survives by hiding in the floorboards. If you had told me a month ago that I’d be trusting my literal existence to a Priestess who fights front-line battles like a bloodstained gladiator, I would have laughed right in your face."
"Trust is an extraordinarily expensive currency in the depths of this Dungeon realm, Skies," Vesper countered, her gaze locking onto his tired face.
However, for a fraction of a single second, the rigid corner of her mouth twitched upward into the absolute faintest, almost hint of a genuine smile. "But your shadows haven’t failed to execute a single target yet, Skies. Your deeply analytical cynicism is... remarkably functional under pressure"
"I’ll gladly take that as a rare compliment from the vanguard," Sky smirked, his dark eyes flashing with a spark of renewed vitality. He stopped twirling the bolt, tapping the metal tip against the table as he turned his attention toward Chloe . "Arthur explicitly said that every single able-bodied Awakened participates in the upcoming sector raid .
That means you’re stepping through that unstable purple portal with us tomorrow morning, Chloe. Are your field deployment rigs actually ready for a boss arena?"
Chloe tapped the heavy leather tool belt strapped around her waist, the wrenches and gears clinking together with a sharp, metallic rhythm that underscored her resolve. Her expression behind the translucent visor was a complex, volatile mix of baseline physical terror and fierce, unyielding engineering determination.
"I’ve spent the last three hours reinforcing a prototype Iron Mecha combat suit, utilizing the high-capacity spare batteries and premium iron ore that Arthur’s lackeys left behind at my station," Chloe explained rapidly, her fingers mimicking a coding sequence on the tabletop. "The frame is still incredibly clunky, and my personal health profile is still dangerously fragile compared to a true Knight class, but I can successfully deploy localized armor-plating defensive fields and drop portable, automated tracking turrets to control the flanks. I won’t be a liability to your mobility, Skies. If Vesper’s family could fight and map this whole world without a system manual to guide them, I can certainly fight with one."
The small workshop corner fell silent once more, the warmth of the herbal tea radiating between them as the localized security fields continued to filter out the distant shouting of the assembling vanguard factions. Sky looked down at his forearm crossbow, checking the status of his remaining attributes one last time before the transmission cycle triggered. They were an irregular, broken squad of independent misfits, but as they stared across the table at one another, the impending shadow of the royal Rumble felt less like an execution block and more like an open ledger waiting to be written in blood
