Chapter 60: The Assembly of the Thirties
The next morning, the Sanctuary’s central hall looked like a frantic staging ground for a global war. The comforting domestic normalcy that usually defined the Living Room tavern had been entirely stripped away, replaced by the grim, clinical preparation of soldiers facing an execution block.
Thirty chosen Awakened stood in perfect, disciplined rows before the massive, towering Obsidian Portal that loomed over the far end of the hardwood floor.
The air inside the lodge was thick, heavy, and suffocating, reeking of consecrated holy oil, sharp ozone from overcharged batteries, and the volatile chemical fumes of alchemical potions being prepped for immediate consumption.
Commander Arthur stood proudly at the absolute front of the Vanguard brigade, his massive frame radiating a renewed sense of military authority. In his heavy, iron-gauntleted hands, he now proudly wielded the freshly forged [MEAT GRINDER] battle-axe—a terrifying, massive green-tier weapon engineered from the blueprint fragments Sky had bartered away. The weapon was a marvel of brutal design, its jagged, heavy edge pulsing with a volatile green light, featuring kinetic shotgun shells seamlessly integrated directly into the blade’s primary striking face to blast targets at point-blank range. Alongside him stood the elite representatives and highest-tier operators of every major faction in the hub, assembled to form the core of the unified raid team.
The Ranger Leader: The supreme commander of the ranged auxiliary units. She was a tall, elegant woman clad in light, flexible leather armor, holding a sleek, custom-built composite bow that vibrated with a high-frequency hum, firing concentrated bolts of pure, piercing green plasma designed to strip away high-defense monster shields from a safe distance. The Bare-Handed Brawler: A scarred, intensely volatile brawler emerging from the deep, lawless underbelly of the lobby who fought completely bare-handed without the aid of cold iron swords. He relied entirely on a savage, high-risk life-steal passive trait that allowed him to regenerate his own health pool in real time by literally tearing through monster flesh and armor plates with his bare knuckles. The Plague Doctor: The hazard-suit alchemist from the fireplace corner, walking alongside his primary medical assistant. He carried a massive, heavily reinforced backpack filled to the brim with volatile elemental flasks, ready to saturate the upcoming battlefield in a dense mist of toxic poison and continuous, burning chemical fire to melting down incoming waves of lower-tier scouts.
And positioned at the very flank of this assembled army stood the independent vanguard unit: Sky, Vesper, and Chloe.
Chloe was completely encased within a bulky, three-meter-tall industrial exo-suit composed of riveted vanguard steel and exposed copper wiring. The massive, heavy mechanical rig hissed continuously with pressurized white steam, its built-in generators humming loudly as they stabilized her fragile personal health profile behind thick armor-plating fields. She checked her visor diagnostics, her active [Network Link] already mapping out the biometric data streams of the twenty-seven players marching alongside them. They were more than that but she was careful not to put a lot of strain on herself.
Arthur slowly turned his heavy, unreadable gaze toward the thirty assembled fighters, his golden hair catching the harsh light of the forge vents as he raised his heavy hybrid battle-axe high into the air.
"Listen to me very carefully, active Awakened!" Arthur’s booming voice roared through the central hall, echoing powerfully off the high rafters and silencing the last murmurs of the crowd. "The automated hospital grids in the physical waking world currently have exactly thirty-six hours of backup emergency power remaining in their generators. If we do not successfully shatter the corrupted core of the Crystal Crab today, our physical bodies in the Central Sleep Cages will become permanent, hollow vegetable shells, and the logic of the Dungeon Array will claim our human souls forever. We do not stand here today to fight for glory! We do not draw our blades to hoard precious soul gems! We fight for the singular right to wake up!"
"How do you know we’re going to fight a Crystal Crab?" someone asked. "The Rumble hasn’t even begun yet. We’ve been trapped here, clearing floors this entire time."
"We found out from the blueprint," another replied. "There were other clues too. We pieced everything together from what we found while clearing the floors."
"So that’s how you know?"
"Yes."
"WAKE UP!" thirty plus voices roared back in unison, a deafening wave of raw defiance that shook the glass windowpanes looking out into the starry void.
As if responding directly to the sudden, explosive spike in collective player energy, the massive Obsidian Portal erupted into a violent, churning vortex of dark, jagged violet energy. The safe zone’s protection parameters dissolved around the threshold, and the System’s final, immutable warning blocks flared aggressively across everyone’s heads-up display simultaneously, signaling their final descent into the unmapped depths.
[Survive]
Sky looked calmly over at Vesper, reaching down to tighten the fraying fabric of his crimson scarf around his lower face to steel his focus. His upgraded Blood Blade hummed with a stable, misty shroud of black shadow at his right hip, and his forearm repeating crossbow was fully loaded with three steel-tipped energy-printed bolts, ready to apply instant pressure from the shadows. His [Danger Sense] was already prickling with a low, constant vibration, warning him of the sheer, crushing mass waiting for them beyond the rift.
"See you on the other side, Skies," Vesper whispered softly, her sharp gray eyes locking onto his profile with that same unyielding, absolute conviction that had dragged him through the gauntlet.
Without a single trace of human hesitation, her newly evolved Sacred Light-Saber ignited with a pristine, brilliant white flame that completely banished the creeping dark shadows of the portal room, the green circuitry runes along the silver steel vibrating with a lethal, high-frequency cadence.
"Let’s go break some glass, Priestess," Sky replied, a grim, calculated smile forming beneath his scarf as his boots anchored into the floor.
Together, the army of thirty plus stepped firmly forward into the shifting, violent violet light, plunging headfirst into the final, desperate battle for their human lives and the future of the waking world. The vortex claimed their avatars in a blinding flash of code, tearing their consciousnesses away from the safety of the Sanctuary and throwing them directly into the jaws of the meat grinder.
