Chapter 7: Empty Vessel
Sky’s physical vessel slumped limply back onto the cold stone altar. The heavy runic chains that had held him down just moments ago were entirely gone. They had shattered under the force of the kinetic blast when the cavern roof came down. Now, jagged pieces of dark, smoking metal lay scattered on the slab around his numb limbs, sizzling as they cooled against the blood-stained stone. But he could barely move. It wasn’t just physical exhaustion pinning him to the altar. A devastating, freezing realization washed over his mind and settled heavily in his chest like an anchor of solid stone.
[You have lost your soul]
My soul is gone.
In this twisted universe, a soul wasn’t just an abstract concept of "who you were." It was the tether. The anchor. It was the metaphysical thread that connected a transmigrator back to their original world. To Earth. To home. To everything he had ever known before the whispers started.
Without it, that connection was permanently severed. He could never, ever go back. A profound, paralyzing despair gripped his consciousness. It was a weight heavier than the deepest black sea, heavier than the iron chains, heavier than any misery he’d ever felt in his short life.
I’m never going home.
He didn’t cry. His broken physical body didn’t even have the moisture left to produce tears. But inside the quiet, hollow chamber of his mind, something screamed. Silently. Infinitely. Sky dragged his numb, empty body off the edge of the altar. His limbs didn’t feel like his own anymore. They moved sluggishly, like they belonged to a clumsy puppet controlled by frayed strings. He crawled across the floor, his palms slipping over pooling blood, trying to stay low. He desperately tried to stay out of the direct path of the rampaging beast tearing the chamber apart. The Abyssal Stalker was still dominating the center of the ruined amphitheater.
Suddenly, it stopped moving.
Its massive, armored head turned with a slow, deliberate clicks of its neck joints. Its glowing yellow eyes swept across the carnage, ignoring the dead and looking for life. They landed directly on Sky. Sky froze in place. Every single muscle locked. He couldn’t even force himself to blink. His Status Array flared to life entirely on its own accord, panicked and glitching, projecting a glowing visual overlay right above the monster’s horned head:
Abyssal Stalker Rank: E-Rank (Blue dungeon creature Class) The apex predator stared down at Sky’s crawling, pathetic form for one long, terrifying second. Sky braced himself. This was the end. This was how his short story concluded. Eaten. Again. Torn to shreds in the dark. But the monster’s yellow eyes simply drifted past him without a flicker of interest. Because Sky possessed absolutely zero soul essence, he didn’t register to the creature’s supernatural radar. To the Stalker’s magical senses, he was nothing. Less than nothing. A lifeless rock. An inanimate piece of furniture sitting in the muck. Background noise in a room full of moving targets. He was just a walking void.
Dismissing him entirely as carrion, the blue monster turned away. It lunged across the rubble after a fleeing acolyte, its jaws unhinging with a wet tear, and the priest’s screaming stopped a faction of a second later. Sky exhaled a ragged breath. He hadn’t even realized he was holding it.
He wasn’t the only survivor looking at him, though. Across the blood-slick floor, through the rising dust smoke and the piles of bodies, another pair of eyes locked onto him with homicidal focus. The High Priest. His golden mask was cracked down the middle. His ceremonial robe was torn to ribbons. His face was twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated rage. He rushed forward out of the smoke and slammed his full weight into Sky’s weak, hollow body, driving them both hard against the stone ground.
"It was you!" the priest spat, hot spittle hitting Sky’s cheek. His hands shot out like talons and closed tightly around Sky’s throat. "You! You caused this anomaly! Your empty vessel broke the ritual! You led this beast into our sanctuary!" The grip tightened, cutting off what little oxygen Sky had left. Sky clawed weakly at the priest’s thick wrists. He tried to buck his hips. He tried to scream for help. But he was simply too weak. His HP was already scraping the absolute bottom of his gauge. His soul-less body had no biological strength left to fight back against a grown man. Black spots began to dance and spin at the edges of his vision. His life started flashing before him. Not old memories of Earth, but recent moments. The toxic rain. The sleep cage. The old man’s terrifyingly hollow void chest. I have to think of something. I have to exploit something. Or I’m going to die right here.
[HP: 2 / 5]
His right hand flailed wildly against the dirt. It hit something solid. A heavy wooden offering table, knocked over in the initial chaos of the ceiling collapse. With the absolute last ounce of adrenaline he could muster, Sky kicked the wooden leg with his heel. It skidded across the stone floor with a loud, sharp, echoing CRACK.
The sudden sound cut clean through the ambient noise of the battle. The Abyssal Stalker’s head snapped around instantly. Its yellow eyes tracked the movement. They found the High Priest straddling Sky, still furiously choking the life out of him. The predatory beast didn’t hesitate. It dove forward to claim its prey. One bite. That was all it took. The High Priest didn’t even have enough time to scream. Armor, bone, flesh, and the golden mask all vanished into the Stalker’s massive maw in a single, fluid motion. A heavy spray of blood painted the stone. The remaining lower half of his body hit the floor with a wet thud. Gone, just like that.
Sky lay there on his back, gasping for air through a severely bruised throat. He stared blankly up at the crumbling ceiling as the Stalker turned its heavy torso and lumbered away into the fog, already hunting for the next sign of life. He had to move. Right now. Before the beast came back to inspect the noise, or before another vengeful priest came after him. Before his remaining HP hit absolute zero. Driven by desperation, Sky dragged his rapidly weakening body across the floor. Away from the center of the amphitheater. Away from the flickering torches. He scrambled into a dark, hidden alcove at the very edge of the cavern. It was a partially collapsed structure, deeply shadowed. The fighting hadn’t reached this corner yet. He collapsed heavily against the stone wall, his chest heaving as he fought for breath.
That’s when he saw it. In the darkness, it was beautiful. Growing directly out of a cracked, corrupted tree root that had forced its way through the foundation stone was a single fruit. It was strange. Pulsing. Vividly crimson. Veins of absolute black ran through its skin, mimicking the patterns of the sacrificial altar. It thrummed with a volatile, chaotic energy that made the cold air immediately surrounding it shimmer and warp. The Harvest fruit. The exact kind of vessel the priests had used to extract his soul in the first place.
This is stupid, some logical part of his brain thought. This will absolutely kill me if I dare do what I am thinking. Another part of him the primal part that was down to 2 HP, possessed no soul, and had no way home answered much louder.
Then die trying.
Driven by pure, unadulterated survival instinct, Sky reached out with his shaking, blood-stained hands. He grabbed the fruit, ripping it from the root. It was shockingly warm to the touch. It pulsed against his bare palm like a frantic, second heart. Without giving himself time to hesitate, he shoved it directly into his mouth. The flesh was incredibly bitter. It tasted rotten and intensely sweet at the exact same time. He forced himself to swallow it whole, gagging on the pulp, praying to whatever forgotten god was left in this dungeon that it would give him strength. That it would fix his broken body.
The reaction was instantaneous. And horrific. The exotic, chaotic energy stored inside the fruit hit his empty, soul-less vessel and detonated like a bomb. It felt like his blood had suddenly turned to boiling oil. It felt like every single cell in his body was being violently pulled apart at the molecular level, then stitched back together entirely wrong. Sky fell hard to his knees, his hands clawing at his chest. His eyes widened in pure, unmaskable agony. His physical body began to tear apart beneath the surface of his skin. Muscles spasmed uncontrollably. Veins turned a deep, bruised black against his pale flesh. He could feel it happening—his very humanity was dissolving from the inside out, overwritten by an unknown entity And his mind... his mind shattered.
It broke into a million fractured, jagged pieces. Memories of home, physical pain, the echo of the whispers, the city rain, the iron cage—all of it splintered into chaos.
The fruit wasn’t saving his life. It was completely rewriting his biology.
Sky threw his head back toward the shadows of the ceiling and screamed.
But no sound came out.
