Chapter 8: Assimilation or Destruction
The crimson fruit did not merely explode with raw, physical energy. It screamed. It wasn’t a vocal sound that traveled through the air, but a crushing gravitational weight that forced Sky to understand the sheer magnitude of what he had just done. Because his physical body was now a completely hollow, vacant vessel stripped of its original anchor, it created a massive, ravenous spiritual vacuum. He was an empty core with zero natural resistance.
And the ruined amphitheater was absolutely overflowing with loose, untethered souls.
Dozens of translucent, shimmering blue essences were currently drifting aimlessly through the toxic smoke. They were the agonizing residual souls of the slaughtered prisoners, the executed cultists, and the weeping children. All of them had been violently cut loose from their mortal shells when the Abyssal Stalker fed. The very moment that volatile crimson energy detonated inside Sky’s vacant body, the drifting ghosts turned.
All at once, they were violently pulled across the width of the cavern. Streaks of blinding blue light tore through the heavy smoke and pooling blood, rushing directly toward his alcove like he was the only light source left in a dying world. They slammed hard into his chest. The metaphysical intrusion was catastrophic. Sky’s physical frame ballooned under his tattered tunic. His spine arched violently off the cold stone floor, snapping into a rigid, unnatural bridge. His veins bulged aggressively against his pale skin, glowing with a chaotic, multi-colored light—deep blues, fiery reds, fractured golds, and absolute black. Fifty different consciousnesses if not more were actively fighting each other for dominance inside a single nervous system.
His muscles tore away from the bone under the immense pressure. He could hear it happening from the inside out. Wet, ripping sounds echoed within his own torso. His skull felt like it was splitting in two from an internal explosion. Pressure built behind his eyes until he thought his retinas would pop from their sockets.
And inside his head— The screaming began. Fifty separate consciousnesses. Fifty distinct voices. Fifty lives that were absolutely not his own flooded his brain. A young child crying hysterically for her mother. A dying soldier begging for his severed legs back. A terrified mother praying to a god who wasn’t listening to her. A brainwashed cultist chanting the dark words of the abyss. An old man laughing maniacally as his heart stopped.
Memories that weren’t his flooded his cortex like a tidal wave. He saw faces he’d never seen before, witnessed names he’d never heard, and experienced horrific deaths he’d never died. He was being torn apart from the inside out, drowning helplessly in a sea of stolen identities.
Stop. Get out. This isn’t me. Shut the hell up! Sky rolled violently on the dirty ground in sheer pain and agony. This was, without a doubt, the absolute worst situation he had found himself in since coming to this world.
But the invading souls weren’t listening to his mental commands. They were too busy tearing at each other, fighting for absolute dominance over the empty vessel. His vessel. Across the chamber, the Abyssal Stalker suddenly froze mid-step. The E-Rank blue dungeon creature had previously ignored Sky’s existence entirely. To its predatory senses, the boy had just been debris. Inanimate furniture. Nothing. Now, its massive, armored head snapped toward the dark alcove with terrifying speed. To its magical radar, Sky had completely transformed. He had gone from a worthless, lifeless rock to a blinding, hyper-concentrated feast of pure, delicious spiritual energy. It was fifty vulnerable souls packed tightly into one broken human body.
A gluttonous, earth-shaking roar vibrated the loose stones from the cavern ceiling. The beast turned. Its multiple limbs churned the bloody earth, digging deep trenches into the stone floor as it charged across the room. Its massive jaws unhinged wide enough to swallow an entire house. It was coming directly for the cluster of souls. It was coming for Sky. Death was mere seconds away. The monster leaped into the air. The sheer velocity displaced the smoke. Glowing torchlight glinted off obsidian teeth the size of greatswords. Its massive shadow covered Sky’s twisted body completely. And in that final second of life, something freezing cold cut through the chaos of Sky’s fracturing mind.
Total clarity.
The dungeon Array floating before his eyes glitched violently, the blue text snapping into a harsh, jagged red that burned directly over his vision:
Assimilation or Destruction.
There was no third option left on the table. If he tried to hold them back, the competing ghosts would tear his physical body apart. If he let them go, the Stalker would swallow them whole and him along with them. Driven by the ultimate, primal will to survive, Sky stopped fighting the tide. He stopped pushing the invading souls out of his mind. Instead, he opened the floodgates of his empty vessel even wider, letting the vacuum take over.
Come in, he thought, and it wasn’t just his voice anymore. It was all of theirs speaking in a horrifying unison.
All of you. Come in right now! If you want to devour me and take over my body, you are going to have to do much more than this! Hearing the wailing spirits, Sky bit his teeth together so hard they cracked.
Shut the fuck up and just settle down for crying out loud! Using the chaotic, mutating energy of the crimson fruit as a biological glue, he reached deep inside his own chest. He grabbed the fifty screaming souls with his mind and forcefully crushed them together into a single point.
Not gently. Not with an ounce of mercy. He compressed them. Forcefully. Violently. He packed them together into a dense, highly volatile weapon. He couldn’t keep them permanently, but he could burn them all at once. Just as the Abyssal Stalker’s massive jaws closed around his upper body—just as its razor-sharp teeth scraped his armor and its hot, sulfurous breath filled his lungs— Sky unleashed the payload.
It wasn’t a magical spell. It wasn’t an ordinary skill. It was a raw, kinetic shockwave of concentrated soul-force. Fifty lives and fifty deaths, compressed into a singularity and detonated from his chest. The explosion erupted out of the alcove like a localized supernova.
Blinding light, deafening sound, and pure kinetic pressure expanded outward. The sheer force of the soul-burst detonated the monster’s head from the inside out. The thick, armored plates didn’t just crack—they shattered into thousands of flying obsidian shards, each one acting like a bullet.
The violent blast wave tore through the rest of the creature’s massive body. Muscles instantly vaporized. Internal organs liquefied. The multi-limbed torso was thrown backward across the cavern floor, skidding through mud and stone until it crashed into the far wall and lay completely still. Lifeless. A sudden, absolute silence followed. Sky collapsed back into the pooling blood. He was gasping for air, but his lungs didn’t actually hurt anymore. He wasn’t even sure his body needed oxygen to function at this point. His flesh was badly scorched, bleeding from every open pore. His skin was cracked with glowing lines, looking as if the runic chains had been permanently carved into his biology. But he was alive. Barely clinging to life, but alive.
He was fundamentally altered. Above the smoking corpse of the blue monster, the air shimmered. The dungeon Array flickered one last time, its text unstable, deciding his fate.
[HOST STATUS: CLINICAL DEATH]
[SOUL CORE: FAILING]
The last line stayed on the screen, blinking steadily. Sky stared at it through blurred vision, and then he laughed. It was a wet, broken sound. Anyone seeing him smile like this in the dark would think he had gone completely insane. Death was growing near; he could feel the cold grip of the grim reaper ready to harvest his soul. Well, if he even had a normal one left to take in the first place. His vision dimmed out. The glowing lines under his skin pulsed once, twice, and then everything went black as the runes spoke one final time.
