Chapter 1279: Chapter 1258: Uninvited Guests
The Five Conglomerates! The person sitting in the third seat died at three in the morning in a luxurious hotel suite after engaging in sexual activity with a bar girl, and the cause of death...is rather cheap!
A male still in his prime, how could he die from heart failure? During sexual activity, dying from heart depression due to excessive excitement, now that’s really laughable!
Xiao Lin tossed the newspaper aside, a cold smile playing on his lips!
"What’s making you smile like that?" Xia Xue accidentally caught sight of Xiao Lin sitting alone behind the desk, laughing at a newspaper discarded on the floor. Her belly, only three months in, wasn’t very noticeable yet, but she already found small movements a bit laborious.
She picked up the newspaper and glanced at it hastily. "Another one dead, huh? Lin, I’ve always been curious about what methods you used to bring those suppliers back to Sin City? Compared to you, I’m really far off."
"What are you doing looking at such gory stuff first thing in the morning? It’s not good for the baby!" Xiao Lin habitually embraced Xia Xue from behind, feeling her slight plumpness that seemed more pleasurable to touch. "The Black Doctor is really taking care of you well, you’ve got a bit of meat on you now," he remarked, pinching a tiny bit of her waist and playing with it.
"Hmm, I’ve become uglier, will you stop wanting me?" A woman’s lifeline is her face and figure; Xia Xue had complained multiple times about the perpetually stern unlicensed doctor. "Lin, I am a doctor too, you know, I understand a bit about this health regimen stuff. Let me take care of myself, okay? That Black Doctor with his constant poker face is problematic for the baby, okay?" Xia Xue pouted and grumbled.
"No one is more suitable than that guy, besides a little plumpness feels better. The more you eat, the better the baby absorbs. Anyway, after you have the baby, I’ll just put in more effort to help you work out your waist, I don’t mind." Xiao Lin said with a cryptic smile, a gleam flashing in his eyes. He had it all planned out; he would reclaim everything from these ten months and make up for his recent insomnia.
"You’re so unserious!" Xia Xue rolled her eyes at him, but felt sweet at heart. "Honestly, tell me, are you doing some illegal stuff? I can’t help but feel this has something to do with you, and what’s really going on upstairs? I see Consort Ling running up there all the time, and that red-haired Lao Jiu went up there and never came back down. You’re not doing something bad behind my back, are you?"
Pregnant women often get a bit neurotic, not really wanting to know, but can’t help guessing something’s up. "Side business!" He brushed it off with two words, then handed a ledger to Xia Xue. "I recently looked at the financial statements here, haven’t you noticed anything odd?"
"Hmm! I have, but I’m not in a rush to deal with it. This was submitted from below, plus there’s another one in my second drawer. Compare them when you get a chance." Xia Xue knew about the financial issue Xiao Lin mentioned, she just forgot to tell him. "The current finance team has been employed since the beginning of Sin City. I started keeping an eye on this person since I knew my previous secretary was Murong Lengyue’s person. They joined the company at the same time. Initially, they were fairly by-the-book, but the report content started changing last month, and there were issues with several investment funds. So, I enlisted another financial company to audit the accounts, and the missing funds are roughly around a hundred million, but I haven’t tracked the funds’ whereabouts, so I haven’t acted yet."
Xiao Lin kissed Xia Xue’s forehead and cheeks affectionately; the nutritional balance had made her skin more tender and glossy with a rosy hue. "As long as you’re aware, it’s okay. You handle this matter yourself; I’ll track the funds’ whereabouts. What are you planning to do though?"
"I’m not like you; I’d obviously go through the judicial process. But even if we dig deeper, it doesn’t necessarily affect that person. It would just be a one-sided admittance of guilt; stuff like commercial espionage happens multiple times a day without much result."
"Such a petty woman!" Xiao Lin playfully pinched Xia Xue’s nose. "I can almost smell the sourness of jealousy."
Xia Xue went silent. Xiao Lin had already laid everything out for her when he returned that day, including the countermeasures. Although it was not a glorious matter, especially from a woman’s perspective, it did harm to the other party. But...
"Don’t let anyone know you’re pregnant!" Although there was surprise, there was also concern.
"Got it! You’ve set up so many protective walls around me, what are you worried about? I barely have any sense of freedom." Xia Xue purposefully feigned a carefree tone, her charming eyes blinking at Xiao Lin as if intentionally stirring his senses.
Just then, the secretary’s voice came from within. "Mr. Xiao, there’s a guest outside looking for you!"
"Who would it be at this hour? It’s almost time to get off work!" Xia Xue asked curiously.
"Let me send you upstairs first!" Just as the message arrived, someone came looking for him. Xiao Lin sneered. "Show him to the conference room, and you can leave for the day."
"Yes, Mr. Xiao."
"Can’t I wait here for you?" Xia Xue pouted unhappily, seeming as though every time something happened, he would send her somewhere he deemed safe.
"Listen!" Xiao Lin gently pecked her cheek, simultaneously sending a command to Consort Ling while also instructing Lao Jiu to head to the meeting room.
After the secretary led two seemingly odd individuals into the meeting room and served coffee, she prepared to leave, but couldn’t help but cast a curious glance at the people inside. They didn’t appear to be of the aggressive and malevolent type at first sight, but they certainly weren’t good-hearted. Their attire was neat and orderly, yet there was an inexplicable sense of something amiss beneath those clothes.
Upon entering, Lao Jiu noticed the secretary buried in thought. He couldn’t resist the urge to tease her a bit. The new secretary was the kind of girl who seemed appetizing just at a glance—highly educated, high in attitude, and high in cuteness, yet possessing an incongruous personality.
"What’s troubling such a beautiful lady like yourself?" Generally, Lao Jiu rarely showed up on the fifth floor, but his striking red hair ensured he was hard to forget.
The secretary pointed to the meeting room. "There are two peculiar people inside, though I can’t pinpoint why they’re strange. They look quite normal, but I should warn Mr. Xiao to be cautious!"
"Is the meeting room over there?" Lao Jiu pointed to a door at the end of the corridor. "Yes, next to that room."
With a meaningful look at the room, Lao Jiu walked straight to it. "What are you going to do?" the secretary asked worriedly, but received no response. Choosing not to interfere, she picked up her bag and hurried off. Everyone here is bizarre; if not for the high salary, she wouldn’t want to stay here.
A hand rested on the doorknob, exuding an overwhelmingly intense aura from inside the room despite the door’s barrier. Lao Jiu furrowed his brows, attempting to search through his memory for such individuals, but there were few. Taking a deep breath, he pushed the door open and entered.
The two people inside simultaneously turned their heads at the commotion. The red hair didn’t match the person identified in their files, raising doubts; however, they didn’t show this confusion outwardly.
"What brings you two to me?" Lao Jiu seated himself opposite the two people. Before Xiao Lin arrived, he needed to ascertain their identities.
"You’re not the person we’re looking for!" One of them spoke, their tone peculiar and uncomfortable to hear. Nonetheless, it was clear that something was concealed beneath their clothing, explaining the secretary’s suspicion.
"Reveal what you’ve got under there!" Lao Jiu kept his hands in his pockets, rocking on the back legs of his chair. "You’re assassins, aren’t you? I can smell the scent of death on you, haha!"
The two individuals were momentarily stunned and then recalled someone. "It’s you!" They spoke with such synchronized harmony, it was commendable.
"Ah! Now that you know who I am, you should know what to do, right?" His chair’s other two legs landed on the floor with a thump. "Who sent you?"
"We’re sorry, but we cannot disclose that!" As they spoke, both individuals leaped up from their chairs, moving at an imperceptible speed toward Lao Jiu’s head. Another person sprang atop the table, heading for Lao Jiu’s back, attempting to attack him from front and back in the confined space.
As they moved, hidden items beneath their clothes were revealed. Ordinarily, such weapons wouldn’t be noticeable, but these oversized parent-child wheels were too large to remain concealed under clothing.
The parent-child wheels, one large and one small, were each held by one person. Ideally, this weapon was best used by a single person to achieve higher coordination; however, split between the two individuals, the synchronization either showed ignorance of the weapon or the possibility that their coordination had reached such a seamless level, with the latter being highly plausible.
Standing between the two individuals, Lao Jiu dared not act carelessly, but he was frustrated that he hadn’t brought his own weapon. Facing these sharp objects empty-handed was truly challenging.
The gears in the hands of the person in front began to spin, swiftly followed by a response from the person behind. In the blink of an eye, two silver flashes appeared, flying toward Lao Jiu’s neck from front and back.
The narrow space offered no escape route. As the parent-child wheels launched the attack, both individuals also executed spinning kicks; the one behind struck toward his spine, sealing off any path to safety.
Glancing sideways, Lao Jiu suddenly leaned back, causing the chair beneath him to fall backward with a swoosh sound, as he vanished in an instant.
At the moment Lao Jiu reclined backward, the flying parent-child wheels collided violently where he had just sat, clashing with loud clinks and clangs of metal on metal. (To be continued.
