Chapter 1300 - 1279: The Stubborn Assassin (Part 2)

Chapter 1300: Chapter 1279: The Stubborn Assassin (Part 2)

The long whip was like a mere ornament. Xiao Lin watched the man springing up with strict focus; what made this opponent terrifying was his legs—that was his real killing weapon.

Holding his breath and centering himself, he ended the probing phase right here. As the opponent shot up, Xiao Lin’s expression grew solemn; at the same time he bent his knees and sprang upward, meeting the assassin man in midair.

Xiao Lin’s hands shaped into claws and clamped viciously toward the assassin man’s ankles. The latter kicked and twisted away, but while he escaped on the right, he couldn’t escape on the left. Just as he lashed out, Xiao Lin’s left hand had already caught his other foot, five fingers digging hard into the acupoint at the hollow of the ankle.

With a furious roar, Xiao Lin’s arms jolted with force. His left hand twisted, then sank downward, and he swung the man’s whole body up and over, then slammed him toward the ground.

In just a few seconds, the tide of battle flipped. The assassin man, who had always relied on relentless offense, found his ankle locked in Xiao Lin’s left hand and couldn’t break free. When Xiao Lin erupted with that shocking strength, the assassin man had not a shred of resistance left; his entire body was smashed toward the ground.

Boom! A thunderous crash kicked up a cloud of dust. The assassin man felt his chest clog, his vision go black; a metallic sweetness surged from his throat. His whole skeleton felt like it had come apart, bones creaking and grinding with a harsh clatter. The pain was so intense it left him on the verge of suffocation, his opened mouth twitching as threads of blood kept bubbling out of his throat.

The assassin man blinked, as if still not fully awake from the shock. The reversal had happened too fast; he hadn’t even registered his crushing defeat, let alone the heavy trauma he’d suffered.

"Talk. Who sent you?" Xiao Lin didn’t want to slaughter him to the last. This guy’s strikes were vicious, but there was a kind of character in every move that set him completely apart from the assassins on the other side.

The assassin man didn’t answer Xiao Lin’s question. He staggered up from the ground instead, using his actions to show his stance. It was a bit of a shame, but a missed chance was a missed chance. Xiao Lin now had no trace of sympathy for his enemies; even if the other party was innocent, it wouldn’t change a thing.

A low growl rumbled again as Xiao Lin’s body, just landing, sprang back up. His right leg whipped out; in midair his knee bent like a hook, toes curling, crashing down toward the assassin man’s dazed head.

Ah! A sharp, ragged scream tore out as the man who had just stood up was slammed back down, his vision going dark. But after years of scraping by on the edge of life and death, his instincts still kicked in at the moment of crisis. He subconsciously turned, crossing both arms before his chest. It was lucky he had that defensive reflex, because just as his arms came up, a massive force descended.

The assassin man felt like his back had caught fire as he was sent skidding across the ground, scraping along as he flew sideways. The taste of blood flared instantly; he didn’t need to look to know his spine had to be a complete mess.

He didn’t dare lower his hands, keeping both arms in the same position, crossed in front of his chest, numb to the point of feeling nothing at all. His feet braced on the ground, trying to spring up, when that overwhelming force pressed down on him again from above.

Crack. His numbed arms suddenly rang with a crisp snap. The sound of bones breaking echoed under his muscles with a chilling crackle. Fissures spiderwebbed through both arms, spreading without stop. A strangled, uncontrollable cry spilled from the assassin man’s mouth as he watched his own arms break and could do nothing to stop it; the helpless agony left him with only screaming as an outlet.

Xiao Lin looked down at him with cold eyes, then planted both palms on the ground, swung his right leg up, and without a pause lashed it into the assassin man’s chest. "Hurts, doesn’t it? Then let me end it for you."

The assassin man’s body was kicked into the air, crashed down, scraped along the ground, bounced up, then fell again. He slid for more than ten meters before his now-motionless body finally stopped. With a few quick bounds Xiao Lin landed in front of him, looking at that face already twisted beyond recognition. From his faint breathing there were still traces of life, but his chances of moving again were close to zero.

"Kill me." The assassin man stared at Xiao Lin with blood-filled eyes, utterly despairing. This was his only request now. If he failed to kill this man, going back meant death anyway. There was no path left for him.

"Why become an assassin?" Xiao Lin tilted his head, eyeing this stubborn bastard with curiosity. In the "Underground City" he’d seen too many assassins’ faces, but this man didn’t have their aura, which made Xiao Lin curious about his identity.

The assassin man opened his mouth, then clenched his jaw shut and said nothing.

"Really got a spine on you." Xiao Lin let out a sigh, hefted a stick from the ground, and brought it down toward the man’s head.

Blood and froth splattered; the assassin man’s eyes bulged, then he toppled sideways to the ground, unconscious.

Tossing away the stick, Xiao Lin glanced at his own hands. There was no blood on them, but he still wiped them off on his clothes out of reflex.

Two people walked out from behind him, a head of red hair especially eye-catching. "Only coming out now—you don’t think that’s a bit late?" Xiao Lin complained without even turning his head.

"Troy wanted to catch a mouse, so we’re a bit late." Lao Jiu scratched his head, casually making up a lie to gloss it over, while Troy had already hopped over to the assassin man, rubbing the man’s body with his fingers.

"This guy’s not dead yet." He squatted there, tilting his head toward Xiao Lin and the others as if to confirm he was right, then raised his fist, ready to smash it down on the assassin man’s skull.

"Stop him, now!" Xiao Lin yelled to Lao Jiu with a wry smile. "He doesn’t want someone he didn’t kill himself getting punched to death by somebody else."

"Why?" Troy asked, baffled. At this moment his intellect was about that of a kid in his early teens. If the people outside knew that the boss of Original Sin City was like this now, who knew if all those scumbags would revolt. But that was just something to imagine; it wouldn’t actually happen—after all, there was still the Black Doctor.

"This guy’s useful to us, take him back to the ’Underground City’."

"You gonna stash him at my place?" Lao Jiu still didn’t quite buy it, but he hoisted the guy onto his back anyway.

"He’s the kind of person you’ll need, but he’s stubborn as hell. The usual soft approach won’t work. People like him only recognize loyalty. Just don’t cripple him. He’s a real talent, especially those legs of his—most people can’t take that kind of hit."

"That badass?" Lao Jiu was still a bit skeptical. "How’s he compare to us?"

"Of course he can’t compare right now, but give him some training and it’s hard to say."

The three of them carried the unconscious man into Black Street. The light in the little bungalow was still on; the Black Doctor was busy with something inside. Suddenly a shadow shot out of the darkness and lunged straight at Xiao Lin. Lao Jiu hastily jumped aside with the assassin guy on his back, grabbed Troy with one hand and ran toward where the Black Doctor was. He had zero interest in tangling with that beast—too crazy. Probably only Xiao Lin could handle it.

Crow kept trying to jump onto Xiao Lin’s shoulder, but was dodged every time, so in the open circular plaza a man-and-beast chase scene played out, until the screech of a hard brake sounded and the two finally stopped.

Hua Qingyi jumped out of the car. He looked energized and waved at Crow. Xiao Lin let out a whistle; Crow instantly calmed down.

"I figured you wouldn’t be back till dawn."

"Third Young Master’s over there, what do they need me for?" Hua Qingyi chuckled. Tonight he finally found out who the real flower thief was—no one but Third Young Master himself.

"Look at that glow on your face, you must’ve scored a lot." Xiao Lin wiped his face in the pool outside the building, stripped off his bloodstained clothes and tossed them aside, then leaned half his body under the pipe to rinse the grime off.

"Let’s talk inside. There was a lot of gain, but not much that’s useful to us. For your old man though, it’s not bad." Hua Qingyi grabbed a towel and tossed it to Xiao Lin, who was just coming in from outside. The room temperature was comfortable, but for someone still wet in the middle of the night, it was a bit chilly.

"You gone to see Xiaoxue yet?" Hua Qingyi sat down on the sofa, took a cigarette from the box on the table and lit it.

"Haven’t had the time. Ran into an assassin as soon as I came back. But if we can tame him, he’s a pretty decent fighter."

"They moved that fast?" Hua Qingyi didn’t seem surprised at all. "I called you, but your line was constantly busy. Quan Mingyuan went looking for someone to take you out the moment he got back to the hotel. They still don’t really know who you are right now, and the Murong Family hasn’t given them any explanation about you either. Xiao Mu clinging to Murong Lengyue is probably one of the reasons too."

"The old man wants to separate me from them. That way even if we really manage to kill Quan Xianglin in the future, it won’t fall on their heads."

"What are you talking about?" Hua Qingyi took half a drag, his throat practically smoking from the shock. "Isn’t that shoving you straight into a dead end? Don’t tell me you agreed!"

Xiao Lin nodded. Hua Qingyi instantly got so mad he wanted to land a few punches on him. "Do you have any idea what you’re doing? There are plenty of people who can kill Quan Xianglin—why does it have to be you?"

"If it’s not me, it’ll be Xia Ya."

"Xia Ya? Ah, you mean Mu Rongyun, that fake forensic doctor!" Hua Qingyi felt his own pitch getting downright weird.

"The old man’s first pick was Xiao Ya. If it were him, there really wouldn’t be any way back."

"So you just stupidly agreed to their terms?"

"Point is, we can pull it off, right?" Xiao Lin smiled with confidence. "I don’t really believe that whole story about Dragon Soul catching me in the end and me living on under a fake identity, but it’s still better than sending Xiao Ya out there."

Hua Qingyi was at a loss for words. He dropped back onto the sofa, stewing in his own anger.

"I’ve got no way back now. This is the price for my freedom."

"So you’ve already got it all planned out?"

Xiao Lin nodded. He didn’t want to put any extra burden on Hua Qingyi. Truth was, he had no plan at all—just taking it one step at a time. At least for now, there was still one chance sitting out there. (To be continued.
