Chapter 1307 - 1284: An Extraordinary Fatal Wound

Chapter 1307: Chapter 1284: An Extraordinary Fatal Wound

The corpse was mottled with dark purple livor mortis. The girl had a face that was almost impossible to forget. There was a severe depression on the left side of her chin, not the result of surgery, but likely a deformity from birth or something caused by malicious abuse in childhood. Either way, this was a face that branded itself into one’s memory.

Xiao Lin didn’t pay much attention to the finer details of the body. All his focus was locked on that face, to the point that he hadn’t moved a single step for over half an hour, making the few people beside him grow visibly impatient.

The medical examiner standing next to Meisai was dying to ask something. He still held a deeply distrustful attitude toward someone this young; if not for Meisai, he would never have allowed him into his territory.

The examiner’s assistant, wearing a look of disgust, turned the corpse’s head over. From his angle he was about to stare straight at that horrifying depression, but Xiao Lin stopped him with a loud shout. The sudden burst of sound made the other two men equally displeased, and the examiner’s attitude toward Xiao Lin grew even more rigid.

He no longer cared about Meisai and strode directly over to Xiao Lin’s side. Sensing the old examiner’s anger, Xiao Lin smiled faintly. "I’d like to know your determination of the cause of death."

The old examiner hadn’t expected Xiao Lin to ask a question at that moment; the silence had simply gone on too long. He stammered for a bit before squeezing out an answer that was enough to make one want to laugh and cry. "Fright. She was scared to death."

No external injuries, no poisoning, no tiny wounds from hidden weapons, no signs of suffocation—this cause of death was, in fact, plausible. According to Meisai, the first person on the scene, the first clue he provided would influence all subsequent judgments, so the old examiner’s conclusion wasn’t exactly without basis.

Xiao Linxiao smiled, and didn’t rebut the examiner’s conclusion in the slightest. He simply picked up a scalpel from the metal tray, pulled on professional gloves, and began to clear the girl’s hair.

During the shaving, the old examiner’s eyes were practically spitting fire. Under Xiao Lin’s nimble hands, the girl’s smooth scalp was soon exposed. He pressed and pinched the scalp with his fingers, examining the surface closely, practically pressing his whole face against it. Watching this bizarre behavior, the old examiner couldn’t help casting a doubtful glance at Meisai, who only shrugged and offered no comment.

Meisai knew Xiao Lin wouldn’t do anything unnecessary. No one dies for no reason. Even normal physiological deaths have some kind of pathology, let alone a death this abnormal.

"Found it!" Xiao Lin exclaimed, his voice tinged with excited delight. He walked around to the other end of the body, leaned in close to a spot, and pulled it open slightly with his fingers. "Got a magnet?"

The old examiner seemed infected by that excitement as well and leaned in beside Xiao Lin, but he still couldn’t see anything unusual on the scalp. "What is it?" At this moment the assistant brought over a magnet and handed it to Xiao Lin.

Xiao Lin ignored the old examiner. The magnet rolled within the area he’d spread open, but there was no reaction at all. Xiao Lin let out a puzzled sound. "That’s impossible." He ran the magnet again and again over the same spot, yet still there was no change.

The old examiner finally couldn’t hold back. He grabbed Xiao Lin’s wrist. "What exactly are you trying to do?"

Letting the magnet fall from his hand, Xiao Lin pressed two fingers to the scalp and gently pushed downward. The skull beneath gave way slightly, and that was when the old examiner noticed something off—a little bulge emerged between Xiao Lin’s fingers. "Don’t move!" Xiao Lin shouted as the old examiner’s hand was about to touch the black dot.

But the old examiner had already brushed against the bulge. He let out a strangled cry and was instantly jolted backward by some force. Staring blankly at Xiao Lin, his lips trembled with lingering fear. "Th-this... what on earth is that?"

"The needle is just an ordinary needle. The poison on it is anything but ordinary. You were a hair’s breadth from dying from that toxin." Xiao Lin had never been this serious before, and Meisai was unexpectedly struck by the gravity of the situation.

"Young Master Xiao, what exactly is going on?" Meisai asked. Earlier, he had considered that the wound might be on the head, but none of them had found anything.

After rubbing a sharp pick against the magnet a few times, Xiao Lin stabbed it into the bulge. A faint metallic clink rang in their ears as the pick drew out a long black needle, thin as a strand of hair. "One sentence from the chief made me think of a certain person. When the girl died, she died in terror. Weren’t her eyes wide open, with a patch of ashen gray in them?"

Meisai thought for a moment, then nodded. He hadn’t noticed at the time, but recalling it afterward, there had indeed been a grayish pall in the girl’s pupils. "But how did you know?"

Xiao Lin only smiled and didn’t answer. He held the thin black needle to a flame. A lick of blue fire shot up several meters high, let out a shrill whistle in the air, and then abruptly vanished.

The practiced motion only deepened Meisai’s suspicion about Xiao Lin’s motives and the hidden part of his secrets. With the old examiner present, he refrained from pressing further.

After being scorched, the Silver Needle looked even darker and shinier. Xiao Lin tossed the needle into clear water. "Take it out after it’s been soaking for three hours. And the water it’s been in must be poured into soil. Only then will the toxin disperse naturally. Whatever you do, don’t touch the liquid. This poison is colorless and tasteless in water." After giving his instructions, Xiao Lin beckoned to Meisai, and the two of them left the autopsy room.

The two walked in silence until they sat down in the chief’s office. Meisai studied Xiao Lin curiously. "Young Master Xiao, you must already have a suspect in mind." Xiao Lin nodded. "But you don’t intend to tell me." Xiao Lin nodded again. "Why?"

"Just as the chief said, this has already exceeded your jurisdiction. A smart man wouldn’t classify this eyewitness’s case as homicide."

"I appreciate Young Master Xiao’s intentions, but if you really get involved in areas you shouldn’t, I will still enforce the law impartially. Even if you are Chopin’s half-brother, it won’t make a difference."

"Thanks. That came a bit late, though. Without your explosives back then, I probably wouldn’t have escaped Mu Rongyun’s hands."

"Thanks to you, my debt of gratitude is paid. Now I can continue to act according to my principles. This time I can let it go, but I’ll be watching you."

Xiao Lin tilted his head, thinking. "Meisai, can you really be impartial? Those people are no ordinary figures. Is it worth risking your neck? In your current position, as long as you go with the flow, you’d be rock solid."

Xiao Lin didn’t get an answer to that. He strode out of the station, a wave of hot air rolling over him. It felt like he still carried the smell of blood on him, and Lao Jiu’s head of red hair was already blazing on the far side of the street.

Meisai stood by the window, watching Xiao Lin get picked up. As he mulled over that last question, he couldn’t help feeling a faint uncertainty of his own. (To be continued.
