...

The system notifications continued bombarding Evan as he received his share of the ESS from the Forsaken slain by Shadow and his army of Creatures of Death.

The amount he’d get from Shadow’s subordinates was capped at 1,000,000 ESS per day, already earned during previous hunts, so now he was only receiving ESS from his clones directly.

That said, he wasn’t really paying attention to any of it, he was far more absorbed in watching the massacre Shadow had unleashed toward the end, using his new ability.

’No matter how many times I see it, it’s always spectacular,’ he thought, watching how the ability had decimated the enemy in a single strike.

The weaker monsters, hit with a full 100% debuff, were wiped out instantly, their souls claimed by Shadow as Soul Points, while the stronger ones were worn down past their limits and slaughtered by his army.

Evan had already seen this scene play out plenty of times over the past few hours, Shadow had been using it constantly against C and B-rank enemies, but this was the first time he’d used Soul Points to amplify the debuff’s power.

While Evan marveled at his clone’s strength, Lirien, who had witnessed the entire thing from start to finish, stood frozen in place, unable to move a muscle.

Even though the other side hadn’t attacked her so far, that didn’t necessarily mean they were friendly. Maybe they had other plans for her. Or maybe they simply hadn’t noticed her yet. She didn’t know, and honestly, she didn’t want to know, not that it was really up to her anyway.

The strange shadow-like apparitions began to disperse, and so did the withered tree’s projection behind Shadow. He paid it no further attention, simply turning his gaze toward Lirien.

’It’s over,’ she thought, already resigned to her fate now that the other side had clearly noticed her.

Just as she wondered what would happen next, a voice echoed through the area.

"Are you a student of the Awakener Academy?" It was Evan’s voice, he’d decided to take direct control of the clone to interact with the girl.

’He can talk? Wait, no... he knows I’m from the Academy?’ Caught off guard, Lirien froze for a moment, stunned, partly because the figure in front of her looked like some kind of humanoid monster given how it had just annihilated those creatures, and partly because it somehow knew about the Academy.

Her eyes widened as realization dawned on her.

’Could it be that he ended up here by accident too, just like us?’ she thought, deciding it was the only reasonable explanation.

She’d assumed it was some kind of creature native to this strange place, but now she wasn’t so sure, especially since she wasn’t even certain where "here" actually was in the first place.

A flicker of hope sparked in her as she wondered whether this being might also know a way out.

With some hesitation and her heart pounding, she nodded and said:

"Yes, I’m a first-year student at the Awakener Academy," already thinking about how to ask about getting out of here.

Hearing her words, Evan didn’t seem surprised, he’d already guessed as much. But her response at least confirmed that this girl was real, not some twisted illusion this place had conjured up.

It was one of the possibilities he’d considered, and although the odds of that being the case were slim, it wasn’t entirely out of the question either. AAfter all, if there were beings that couldn’t be detected, why couldn’t there be other kinds of beings capable of mimicking the outside world in some way?

This place was crawling with Abyssal gods after all, so a little caution never hurt.

Evan went on to ask a few more quick questions and soon had a general picture.

’Hmm, just as I thought, seems like others ended up in this place too, just like me,’ he thought after hearing what the girl told him.

How she’d ended up here, and what had happened to land her in this situation.

Betrayal. That much made sense, especially in a life or death situation like this one. He wasn’t surprised to hear that her group had ended up in this state because of a problematic member, that was fairly natural, so he didn’t dwell on it too much.

But one thing did catch his attention.

’A strange plant?’

Lirien told him there was a clearing in this forest where a massive, strange plant grew.

At first, that didn’t interest him much, but the moment she mentioned that mana could be used there without attracting those creatures, his interest spiked immediately.

Especially after she told him everything that had happened with the other survivor.

Evan couldn’t help but wonder what that plant actually was, and shared the information with Seraphine, who’d made herself comfortable lounging nearby.

"It’s most likely an avatar of one of the Abyssal gods," she said, munching on a snack.

It was something Evan had pulled out from his [storage], something he’d discovered, to his surprise, didn’t alert those creatures at all.

He’d taken it out just to rest a bit and get comfortable while he worked on understanding more about the law of space, and given his travel companion’s presence, he figured he’d offer her some too, especially after she’d started complaining about how boring he was, as if fighting Forsaken to get out of here was nothing.

So, to shut her up, he handed over a sleeping mat and a couple of snacks, and got some peace in return.

"An avatar? Like a clone?" Evan asked, unable to help comparing it to his own clones, in a sense, they were his avatars too, carrying different divine bloodlines.

"Something like that, yeah. They’re restricted by the laws of this place, so they can’t act directly. Instead, they send avatars to do the work for them. They’re parts of themselves, fragments of their power. They most likely started acting now that this place is filled with new life." she said, munching on dried fruit with an indifferent expression.

Seeing how comfortable she’d made herself, clearly not taking the situation seriously at all, Evan genuinely wondered whether he should just steal her sleeping mat out from under her.

But he set that thought aside and focused on what she’d said.

’New life...’

’So they’ve started hunting the newcomers.’

he thought, realizing she meant him and everyone else who’d ended up here.
