Evan remembered what Seraphine had told him two days earlier. They had already been noticed by those entities, so it was only natural that the other newcomers had been detected as well, prompting them to finally make their move.

"I see, but why do this, and to what end? It can’t be that they’re simply carrying on with their mission to eliminate mana, can it?" he asked.

The Hollows had been created for the purpose of wiping out mana-based life on Earth, but what about this dimension?

Those entities were gods, was it possible they still spent energy doing this even while sealed away in here?

Evan felt there was more to this than met the eye, and Seraphine’s next words confirmed it.

"Unlike the regular Hollows you’ve encountered before, these are beings that sit at the very peak of their species. They’re not monsters driven by instinct or the hunt, they think exactly like we do. They’re intelligent, maybe even more so than most humans. So obviously, they’re not hunting for nothing," she said, grabbing another handful of dried fruit.

Evan waited for her to continue, but instead she just kept staring at the bag in her hand, shaking it as if checking how much fruit was left.

Seeing this, Evan felt a vein throb on his forehead. This woman, even though he’d known her for such a short time, had already found every possible way to get under his skin.

He held back, watching her devour the crumbs, before she finally continued.

"To put it simply, they’re trying to loosen the restrictions placed on them. Once they’ve loosened them enough, they’ll be able to fight back, and finally free themselves from this place," she said, snapping her fingers and making the bag burst into particles of light that faded away shortly after.

That seemed to provoke a nearby Forsaken, but Ash was close by and immediately targeted it.

’Great, so basically a race against time is starting,’ he thought.

He’d known from the start that the longer he stayed, the more trouble he’d be in, but hearing this now made it clear the time he actually had might be a lot less than he’d expected.

He had no idea how many lives those entities would need to accomplish what they were after, nor whether the people who’d already arrived would be enough for that purpose. He didn’t know, and honestly didn’t want to know. All he cared about was figuring out how much time he had left, and Seraphine gave him an estimate.

"The phenomenon definitely captured quite a few people if it appeared in multiple locations. I can tell it wasn’t active for very long, but it most likely dragged in at least several hundred, if not a few thousand people. If every one of them ends up falling into those guys’ hands... then I’d say there’s a very small chance they might actually succeed." she said, working through the information they had and offering what seemed like a cautious estimate.

’A very small chance?’ For Evan, that alone was more than enough to put him on edge.

After all, they were talking about divine beings, not simple awakeners. If there was even a small possibility, however slight, he wasn’t about to feel comfortable about it.

He immediately started thinking about what to do. At his current hunting pace, he was advancing quite fast, but would that be enough?

He had no idea, especially since he wasn’t sure exactly what level he needed to reach with these two laws in order to get out of here.

Right as he was weighing his options, trying to figure out the fastest way to boost his affinity with the two laws, Seraphine’s voice rang out again, closer this time, almost brushing against his ear.

"You know, you’ve got a certain charm when you get all serious like this," she said, her breath brushing against his ear

Evan, who’d been lost in thought for a moment, snapped back immediately at this sudden "attack" from her, glaring at her with fierce eyes.

"Woman, why do you keep provoking me? Do you really think I won’t do anything just because you’re a goddess?" Evan said, not bothering to hold back or be polite, he didn’t care anymore. He’d interacted with this strange goddess enough to know that certain things were pointless, especially when she seemed to not care about them at all.

"My, my... so you’ve been after my body this whole time? To think you had those kinds of thoughts about me."

"Poor me... it seems I’ll simply have to accept my fate." she said, putting on the voice of a damsel captured by a villain.

Evan watched this melodramatic display with an unreadable expression, already used to it by now, and didn’t so much as blink.

Seeing that Evan seemed indifferent, she stopped too, and said, shaking her head:

"You’re no fun. You should really be more proactive, or at this rate you’ll die a virgin."

Evan was someone who’d never really cared about things like that, but hearing her condemn him to a life of virginity somehow struck a nerve.

He wanted to say something back, but held himself. He realized continuing like this would be pointless, the goddess was shameless beyond his level, and he knew he couldn’t win against her.

Not that he had any interest in trying.

At least...

Not right now.

Seraphine seemed to notice this, and instead of continuing, spoke again, this time with a more serious expression.

"This isn’t bad news for you, you know. The presence of that avatar nearby means those guys are sealed here somewhere too," she said, leaving Evan confused.

If they’re nearby, then how is that supposed to be a good thing?

Just as he was about to voice his doubts, she continued.

"These avatars only carry fragments of their original body’s power, so they’re weak—very weak compared to their original selves," she said, and an unsettling smile spread across her face, one that immediately put Evan on guard.

’This crazy woman, what is she planning now?’

"With your current strength, you should be strong enough to hold your own against them, and if you play your cards right, you might even be able to eliminate them," she said.

"Okay, but what’s the point of that? Is it to interfere with whatever they’re planning?" Evan asked, assuming that was the reason she’d suggest such a thing.

Maybe that way he could prevent them from breaking free, which actually seemed like a solid idea, but she shook her head.

"Not quite. You can’t hope to find every single one of them and kill them all. That would take far too long." she said, before he could ask anything further, and continued.

"The reason I said this is good news is because these avatars have been here for a long time. They’re saturated with void energy, and with the laws of this place," she said, and hearing those last words, Evan finally understood.

"Kill them, and the concentration of both laws that’s built up in their bodies is yours."
