In another part of the forest.

Selena, having finished reading the letter, looked down at her mother’s bracelet in her hand and couldn’t help but grip it tightly.

Maybe it was frustration, maybe regret, she didn’t know. She only knew that the brother she’d given up for dead all this time had been alive.

Kept as a servant, mistreated in that manor, a manor that no longer existed.

Naturally, she understood the odds he was still alive now were basically zero. Almost no one had survived. In fact, not just the manor but half the city had been razed, a third of the population dead in that incident, an incident that had started from the manor itself.

So what were the chances her brother had made it out?

She knew the answer to that question, and knowing it only made her feel sadder and more frustrated.

"If only... if only I’d tried harder to look into it," she murmured, her voice lifeless, hollow.

After the news of her monther’s death, she’d stayed numb for a while, sunk into despair, but eventually she’d pulled herself together and turned her thoughts to revenge, and to investigating what had actually happened in that incident, whether what she’d heard was even true.

Maybe it had been her way of running from reality back then, or maybe something else, it didn’t matter. She’d just wanted answers, answers that had been nearly impossible to get at the time, partly because of her own situation, and partly because the distance between the capital and Lirath had simply been too great for her to do anything real about it back then.

So she’d settled for what little she could, keeping track of whatever news about Lirath drifted her way, and focusing on her training with the intent of growing strong, fast.

That had been the only approach she could think of at the time. But now, thinking back, it hadn’t been enough. If only she’d tried harder, maybe she would have found some trace of her brother, and maybe she could have saved him.

If only.

Those two words kept echoing in her head now, dragging her deeper into a spiral of emotion.

For a while she stayed like that, numb. Then came the anger, the kind she rarely felt, but once it finally arrived, she couldn’t hold it back anymore.

She needed to let it out, and the victims of that anger ended up being those strange creatures. For a while, she vented on them, cutting down dozens before that anger finally started to cool, and her reason returned.

What was the point of being angry now?

What had actually changed compared to before?

Nothing. If anything, she was now more determined than ever to see her revenge through.

That determination was what pulled her back from her spiral. She looked toward the corpses of the creatures dissolving around her, saw the pearls scattered on the ground, some from a while ago, others fresh. She had the means to grow stronger quickly, so instead of wasting time, it was better to get moving, then she could start looking for a way out of here.

But just as she was about to do that, a loud boom echoed in the distance, strong enough to make the ground tremble faintly beneath her.

Selena immediately understood it had come from far away, but the power behind it was such that she could feel the impact even from here.

’What’s going on?’ she wondered.

Ever since arriving in this place, she had encountered nothing but bizarre phenomena.

Those strange creatures that were drawn to mana.

Percival, who had changed so drastically that he had been willing to kill his own brother.

And that eerie snow that relentlessly spread across anyone who couldn’t resist it with mana—a death sentence in this frozen world.

Yet despite all of that...

She had never witnessed anything on this scale before.

She went on guard. She didn’t know what it was, but it couldn’t be anything good. She waited a while to see if anything else happened, and sure enough, not long after, another sound came, and then another, each time the ground trembling anew.

By now she’d more or less pinpointed the direction the sounds were coming from, and understood that someone, or something, was fighting.

Maybe it was a battle, maybe some natural phenomenon, she didn’t know, but her curiosity was caught, and after a moment’s hesitation, she decided to go check it out.

She didn’t know much about this strange place. Maybe she’d find something that could help her get out of here, or maybe she’d run into enemies. It was a risk she understood well, but she also understood that sitting on her hands wouldn’t help her much either.

She gathered the pearls and put them in the dimensional pouch, something that should have triggered the appearance of one of those creatures, but to her surprise, it didn’t.

She couldn’t help wondering if those distant sounds had drawn their attention away.

Lirien, now caught in the middle of a desperate situation, didn’t know what to do. On one side were those creatures, on the other, the battlefield, which was anything but safe.

The reality of her situation struck her hard enough to send her mind racing like mad, searching for a way out.

"What do I do, I can’t fight them all at once, even one alone would be a problem," she muttered, already running through the possible scenarios.

She stayed like that for a few seconds, seconds during which the creatures didn’t stop, continuing to close in.

Watching them, her heart pounded even harder, her anxiety spiking with it, and finally, after a moment’s hesitation, she turned and broke into a run toward the clearing.

Both options were deadly, but at least in the clearing there was that guy, probably her only ally, or at least that was what she hoped, and she really hoped she wasn’t wrong.

She understood that rushing into the battlefield might interfere with his fight.

Then again...

It might also distract that monstrous plant.

After all, those creatures had attacked Adrian earlier as well.

That alone proved they weren’t on the same side.

They might even be enemies.

With that thought, she made up her mind and ran, soon reaching the clearing.

But the moment she stepped inside, an immense pressure struck her, and she felt her strength drain from her body as terror crept up through every inch of her.

’This... what is happening,’ she thought. Without realizing it, she’d entered the range of the Abyssal Domain, and it made her whole body tremble, freezing her in place, unable to take another step forward.

It was as if her own body was telling her that one more step and she’d be finished.

That realization petrified her on the spot, and whatever tiny spark of hope she’d just found was snuffed out instantly.

’I guess this is the end,’ she thought, her gaze already turning back, bracing to face those creatures closing in on her. But instead, reality proved different. Her eyes went wide when she saw what was happening behind her.
