The battle began almost immediately, with neither side having any intention of wasting any more time.

Evan remained cautious of the avatar, and for good reason. The moment Shadow’s first subordinates charged forward, they were impaled by strange roots erupting from the ground.

The roots themselves weren’t much of a problem, as they were easy enough to destroy. The real issue was their sheer number.

Dozens upon dozens of them, popping up like spring traps with enough force to pierce a C-rank being.

Evan understood they were on the monster’s home ground, but he still held a massive advantage.

"Guess I’ll have to reshape this place in our favor," Evan muttered, seeing that if the fight kept going like this it would only get messier. So he decided to change the entire terrain outright.

Ash, sensing his intent, shot into the air, quickly reaching a height above the flower itself. The moment he stopped at that altitude, the weapon in his hands turned into living flame and reformed, no longer a blade now, but a bow.

Taking one of the sparks from his Ember Crown, it broke off from the rest and merged into the bow, taking the shape of an arrow.

Ash wasted no time, drawing the arrow and aiming for the ground at the base of the plant.

As if sensing his intent, the avatar reacted instantly, dozens of its thick, thorny vines tore free and lashed toward him. But before they could even close the distance, they were bombarded by a hail of dark arrows fired from below.

There, among Shadow’s army, dozens of subordinates in the rear lines had already prepared their bows.

Volley after volley of arrows tore through the sky, intercepting the incoming vines.

The attack clearly hurt the avatar, which roared and immediately snapped its vines like whips toward the group of subordinates in the back. But it never got the chance as Ash, arrow already drawn, seized the brief window he’d been given and loosed the shot.

The flaming arrow streaked through the sky at terrifying speed, becoming nothing more than a crimson beam.

Before it even touched the ground, the earth around the plant began glowing a deep crimson.

The surrounding trees ignited without warning.

Heat spread across the clearing like a tidal wave.

Then...

The arrow struck.

BOOOOOOM!!

A deafening explosion erupted.

The earth itself seemed to explode apart.

The blast uprooted countless trees, sending enormous chunks of rock and soil flying in every direction.

The arrow had been aimed at the side opposite from where the rest of Evan’s group stood, so the explosion caught the plant’s stem full-on, shielding Shadow and his subordinates in the process, and forcing the plant to take the hit in full.

The smoke slowly cleared, revealing a smoking crater where roots and rotten undergrowth had stood just moments before. The ground, now cleared of any hidden threats, finally offered a more even battlefield, no more hidden attacks ready to spring from underfoot, just him, his clones, and that thing.

The avatar itself hadn’t come out unscathed. Along the side of its stem, where the explosion had struck it dead-on, the bark had blackened and split open, revealing a whitish pulp pulsing faintly with a sickly purple glow, like a wound that refused to close.

Superficial, perhaps, but painful enough to make the avatar’s fury plain.

Evan was satisfied with the attack, its potency was comparable to a full-force strike from a B-rank at their peak, if not an early-stage A-rank, more than enough to damage the avatar.

An enraged roar rose from every mouth scattered across the plant’s body, a discordant chorus of fury that made the very air tremble.

"Angry?" Evan murmured, without the slightest hint of concern.

"This is only the beginning." With the damage already done and the terrain now leveled, he acted immediately.

He signaled to Shadow, who called back the subordinates scattered far from the blast zone, reorganizing them into a tighter formation, while Ash, still suspended in the air with his bow of living flame, drew another spark from the Ember Crown, ready for the next shot.

Hidden behind a pile of shattered logs and broken debris some distance away from the clearing, Lirien watched everything unfold with bated breath.

She’d seen plenty of strange things since arriving in this cursed place, shadow creatures, monsters of flesh and ice, a boy who barely looked older than her capable of killing these strange creatures with his bare hands. But what she’d just witnessed left her breathless.

’That explosion...’

It wasn’t the raw force that struck her, but the sensation that followed it, a wave of power that, even from that distance, made the hair on her arms stand on end. Her heart pounded hard, not from fear this time, but from sheer disbelief.

She understood it was an attack strong enough to wipe out a weak Awakened like her in a single blow, maybe even the instructor himself, who was a B-rank.

In other words...

That young man and his strange subordinates were actually managing to fight that horrifying monster head-on.

And they weren’t even at a disadvantage.

The realization eased the fear weighing on her chest.

Her earlier worry faded, and now she felt there was at least a small chance of getting out of this alive, though she didn’t want to admit it, her survival now depended on that boy. If he won, she was safe. If he didn’t, she’d die sooner or later. That much, at least, was already clear to her.

Just as she was starting to calm her nerves a little, she suddenly went on alert.

Something suddenly put her on edge.

She couldn’t tell exactly what had changed.

But everything that had happened over the past few days had sharpened her instincts far beyond what they used to be.

Almost instinctively, she glanced toward the edge of the forest.

A movement.

Something darted between the fallen trees.

She spun around, her heart leaping into her throat.

It was one of those creatures.

And behind it, more shapes were moving between the trees, all heading her way.

’Shit, don’t tell me they got drawn in by the battle,’ she thought, cursing herself for not having considered that possibility.

That first attack had released an enormous amount of concentrated mana, practically a beacon drawing moths from every direction. She should have expected them to show up and gotten to safety in time, but her earlier distraction had made her miss that detail entirely, and now here she was, with no clear way out left.

She’d ended up caught in the crossfire of that fight between the two of them, and now her only choice was to retreat or push forward, either option would probably lead to the same result, since ahead of her stood a wave of those creatures, and behind her, a fierce battle between those two.

’Ah, screw my life.’
