Evan wasted no time and immediately commanded his two clones to appear.

Though he was strong enough to hold his own against an A-rank, the being before him was at the peak of that rank, and on top of that, it was the avatar of a god. He wouldn’t underestimate it, especially when there was no need to take unnecessary risks.

The shadow at his feet stretched, twisted, and from it emerged Shadow, scythe already gripped in hand, the hood concealing his face. In the same instant, the air in front of Evan cracked with a reddish-gold flash, and Ash emerged from it, his gleaming armor lending the whole scene a demonic edge.

The moment both clones appeared, they released their own domains, and soon a wave of power surged from every direction. Three domains had been released in the same spot at once, which made them collide and, as a result, warp the surrounding area.

The unstable space of the place began to react, but before anything unexpected could happen, something seemed to suppress it. It hadn’t been Evan, it had been the avatar, and Evan noticed it.

’Hm... It seems they have a certain degree of control over space,’ he thought, wondering whether it was due to void energy, after all, it tended to absorb other elements and corrupt them. Maybe it had used that principle to avoid destabilizing this area any further.

"Gentlemen, try not to embarrass yourselves. After all, we’re up against the avatar of an actual god," he said as he drew his sword, ready to throw himself into the fight.

Neither Shadow nor Ash stood idle either.

One struck the base of his scythe against the ground, and soon, a withered tree with some characteristics similar to the avatar before them appeared, along with numerous creatures of every size and species that emerged alongside it.

The other spread his wings, and soon a strange orange-red energy surrounded him, rapidly raising the temperature of the air around him. A number of shifting sparks formed around him and soon took the shape of a crown, orange-red crystals detached from one another yet suspended in a circular formation above it.

It was Ash’s new ability, [Ember Crown], an ability that, unlike Shadow’s, which was more of a total support ability for himself and his legion, worked instead by drastically boosting the user’s own strength, sacrificing the sparks that composed it.

These sparks could either be used to enhance Ash himself or be launched as powerful attacks.

The destructive power they possessed was so great that Evan had to isolate the two clones from each other.

Otherwise, there was a risk they would end up damaging one another.

Evan noticed that the way these sparks were gained and used resembled Shadow’s Soul Points, something that intrigued him greatly at the time, though he had no one in particular to ask about it just yet.

Seraphine had told him that at a certain point along one’s path of evolution, certain characteristic abilities tied to one’s own concept began to develop, like these two abilities, but it was something that only started once one reached Overlord rank.

Needless to say, the two clones’ case was special, since they carried divine bloodlines.

The avatar seemed to notice the presence of the two clones, and seemed to react violently to it.

"Strange... why is there a trace of divinity in you?" it said, its voice no longer feminine but some strange, irritating mixture to listen to.

Naturally, Evan didn’t waste time answering, he understood that prolonging the conversation would only give the other side more time to analyze his strength and respond with more lethal attacks.

Evan didn’t rush into the attack right away, first sending some of Shadow’s subordinates to test the ground, both literally and otherwise. He had already noticed several branching paths across the clearing, and he knew that any hidden attacks could just as easily come from below.

As he began to fight, Lirien, who had put some distance between herself and the battle, trembled with terror at the monstrosity that plant had become.

’I-I slept next to that thing for over two days?’ she thought, remembering all the times she had been right beside that plant, or on the verge of tasting what had once been juicy fruits and were now screaming heads.

The thought alone terrified her, and she nearly retched, though there was nothing left to bring up, having already thrown up less than an hour ago. Only now did she understand that her situation was far worse than she had ever imagined.

’H-he’s going to get himself killed at this rate, what do I do?’Panic rushed to her head as she watched Evan step forward.

That monstrosity gave her a sense of terror she had never felt before. She had already noticed the strange state of the clearing, and even at a distance, she could feel part of the oppressive weight that plant gave off.

If it was suffocating even for her, then what must it be like for that boy?

Just as she was about to make up her mind to act, she saw two strange figures appear beside him, one the mysterious cloaked figure she had met in the forest, the very one who had saved her; the other seemed to be the very embodiment of a demon, which made her freeze the step she’d been about to take forward.

’What if he’s a monster too?’

That was what she thought. The boy had already been strange, far too strong for someone his age, and then there was that powerful subordinate of his who could summon strange creatures.

That alone had kept her constantly on edge around him, though she’d grown somewhat used to it.

But now, seeing yet another monster appear beside him, she couldn’t help but wonder once again whether the boy himself might be some kind of creature native to this place, Just like those beings that could perceive mana, or that strange plant before her.

And what happened next only went on to confirm that suspicion of hers even further.
