SSS Awakening: Conquering Worlds with My Cupid System
Chapter 153: Kidnapping Attempt on AnnaAnna wasn’t an offensive fighter. She wasn’t the type who split mountains or froze cities. She healed. She supported. She kept people alive.
But that didn’t mean she was weak. That was very far from it.
The sun had already dipped below the skyline, painting New Liberty in shades of orange and purple.
Anna Miles quietly drove her sedan through the evening traffic after another long shift at Valecrest’s medical wing. She let out a tired sigh.
"I’m starving."
Her stomach agreed. She smiled faintly.
"Maybe I’ll stop for cake..."
The traffic gradually thinned as she entered one of the quieter roads leading toward the Ashard Estate. Trees lined both sides, while streetlights flickered on one after another.
It was peaceful and calm... for only a few minutes or seconds, maybe less. A black van suddenly drifted sideways across the road, causing Anna to slam the brakes.
"What-"
Before she could finish, three more vehicles appeared behind her. She looked into the rearview mirror only to see that her path was blocked.
The front was also blocked. The left was full of trees, and the right was a steep drainage ditch.
"Professional."
She unbuckled her seatbelt while the van doors slid open at the same time, and eight men stepped out. They were not ordinary kidnappers, but awakened. Each of them carried specialized restraint equipment instead of firearms.
Mana-suppressing cuffs, insulated capture nets, and shock batons. One man adjusted his tie before walking toward her window.
He smiled politely.
"Miss Anna Miles. You’ll be coming with us."
Anna calmly lowered the window halfway.
"Will I?"
"We’d appreciate your cooperation."
"And if I refuse?"
His smile disappeared.
"We’d rather not damage valuable merchandise."
Anna blinked.
"Merchandise?"
The man sighed.
"Our employer specifically requested that you remain alive, healthy, and unharmed. So please..." He extended his hand. "Step out."
Anna stared at him for several seconds, her eyes glinting with quiet golden light.
"No."
The man sighed again.
"I was hoping you’d be reasonable."
He raised two fingers.
"Take her."
Immediately, the eight awakened rushed forward simultaneously. Four targeted the doors, two leaped onto the hood, while the remaining two prepared their suppression nets. Anna finally opened the car door herself, causing the attackers to pause.
"That’s better."
She stepped out, closed the door, adjusted her coat, smoothed down her hair, and looked at them with the same gentle smile she always wore around patients.
"You boys look injured."
The leader frowned.
"What?"
"You’ve all accumulated mana fatigue, micro-fractures, poor circulation, and..." She looked toward one particularly bulky man. "Your left shoulder still hurts when it rains."
The man’s eyes widened.
"How-"
"I’m a doctor. Or, you might know me as the Head Nurse of Valecrest Collegiate Grounds. Some call me Nurse Anna, and only a few know that I’m a doctor."
She smiled.
"I notice things."
The leader frowned.
"Enough talking. Capture-"
Anna raised one hand. Soft golden mana blossomed around her fingertips. Unlike Chloe’s freezing aura or Silas’s overwhelming presence, Anna’s mana felt warm, comfortable, and gentle. It spread across the road like spring sunlight.
Several kidnappers actually relaxed.
"...?"
"What is this feeling?"
"My body..."
"It feels lighter..."
One even smiled unconsciously.
"I haven’t felt this good in years..." Only he knew what he was actually experiencing. No bad thoughts.
The leader shouted, "Don’t lower your guard!"
But it was too late. Anna’s smile softened.
"Healing works both ways."
The golden light instantly intensified.
FLASH!!
The mana flowing through every kidnapper suddenly accelerated beyond what their bodies could naturally withstand. Their muscles began repairing themselves far too quickly.
Tiny tears in their muscle fibers sealed instantly, then tore again under the sudden force. Bones rapidly regenerated microscopic damage, only for new stress fractures to appear immediately afterward.
Their nerves became hyperactive, while their senses sharpened too much. Far too much.
"AAGHHH!!"
"My muscles!"
"It hurts!"
"What is happening?!"
The largest man dropped to one knee; his legs trembled violently as every muscle in his body spasmed uncontrollably. Anna calmly walked between them.
"I’m simply increasing your body’s natural healing."
She tilted her head.
"Unfortunately, the human body isn’t designed to heal at this speed."
Another man screamed.
"My arm!"
His muscles bulged painfully before locking completely. He couldn’t even open his fingers. The leader tried charging her with a shock baton.
Anna sidestepped gracefully, and his momentum carried him past her. She gently tapped two fingers against the side of his neck, causing a pulse of golden mana to enter his body. His balance organ immediately overcorrected.
The world around him spun.
"Wha-"
He collapsed face-first onto the asphalt. Anna dusted off her hands.
"Inner-ear inflammation. It passes."
Eventually, the remaining attackers looked at her with horror.
"She’s just a healer..."
Anna looked almost offended.
"Just?" She smiled sweetly. "Healers know the human body better than anyone."
She took another step.
"So we also know exactly how to make it stop cooperating."
Panic spread instantly.
"Retreat!"
"RUN!"
The remaining kidnappers turned and sprinted toward the vans. Anna sighed.
"I’d rather you stayed."
She pressed her palms together, and a beautiful golden magic circle appeared beneath all four vehicles simultaneously.
"Healing Field."
The kidnappers laughed despite the pain they were feeling. People can be very stupid in the most insane ways.
"She’s trying to heal the cars?!"
The next second, the vehicles groaned. Metal began repairing microscopic imperfections, bolts tightened, panels shifted, and engine components expanded ever so slightly beyond factory tolerances.
CRACK!
The transmissions locked, axles seized, and engines stalled. Every vehicle died simultaneously.
One attacker slowly tried starting the van, but nothing happened. It didn’t even release a snort. Anna smiled politely.
"I over-healed them."
The kidnappers stared at their useless vehicles, then back at Anna, then at each other. One quietly whispered, "Can we surrender?"
The leader glared at him.
"We’re professionals!"
Anna nodded approvingly.
"Good. Professionals usually survive."
She reached into her handbag. The kidnappers immediately tensed, but instead of taking out a weapon, she pulled out her phone and dialed a short number.
"Hello?" A voice sounded over the phone.
"Yes, Officer. I’ve just been attacked."
She looked around.
"There are eight awakened.
"Yes."
"They’re all alive."
"They’re... temporarily unable to resist."
She smiled gently at the men still groaning on the ground.
"I’ll administer first aid while I wait."
The kidnappers nearly cried. One of them looked toward the heavens.
"Why is she doctor scarier than the monsters?"
