"What was Absolute Zero?"

The question lingered within Chloe’s consciousness as she remained seated in silent meditation. For the first time since her awakening, she questioned the very name of her power.

Was it merely ice? Was it simply an unimaginably low temperature? Or... was it something far greater?

The answer began with science.

According to humanity’s understanding, Absolute Zero was the lowest possible temperature in existence. Zero Kelvin [−273.15°C.]

At that point, matter itself reached its theoretical minimum energy state. Atoms did not truly stop moving; quantum mechanics forbade that, but they moved as little as the laws of physics would ever allow.

Heat ceased, molecular vibration nearly vanished, chemical reactions slowed to almost nothing, and entropy approached its minimum. To scientists, Absolute Zero represented a limit, a boundary that could never truly be crossed.

It wasn’t merely "cold." It was the complete absence of thermal energy, the point where motion itself almost surrendered. That was humanity’s understanding. It was beautiful, elegant, and logical.

But also, it was hopelessly incomplete, because humanity had only measured temperature. They had never measured mana. The moment mana entered the universe, the laws changed.

Mana wasn’t simply another form of energy. It was the force that allowed reality itself to bend. It gave birth to miracles, to monsters, to dimensions, and to gods, and because of mana, cold ceased to be merely the absence of heat. It became a concept.

The enlightenment surrounding Chloe deepened. Ancient memories that did not belong to her drifted through the endless sea of white, showing frozen oceans, stars locked beneath crystal ice, entire worlds sleeping beneath eternal winter.

She saw civilizations preserved for tens of thousands of years. They were not dead, but waiting, waiting for the ice to release them.

Then, a voice, soft, ancient, beautiful, yet carrying the weight of endless winters, sounded.

"Mortals believe ice freezes matter. They are mistaken."

The white world trembled.

"Ice is merely the vessel. Winter is the authority."

Countless glowing snowflakes filled the endless space around Chloe. Each one contained memories, lives, kingdoms, wars, and entire histories, perfectly preserved within crystalline frost.

The voice continued.

"Heat creates movement. Movement creates time. Time creates change. And change... creates life."

A single snowflake landed upon Chloe’s palm. Instantly, everything around it stopped. The surrounding mana no longer flowed, sound disappeared, light itself slowed, and even space seemed unwilling to move.

This was like a repeat of what she’d experienced during her enlightenment, but a more advanced and concise one, showing almost the full extent of the power she now wielded.

The voice spoke once more.

"Absolute Zero is not the lowest temperature. It is the point where existence relinquishes motion."

A wave of realization washed over Chloe. Her breathing stopped, not because she couldn’t breathe, or because she was overwhelmed, but because breathing itself had become unnecessary inside the vision.

Her comprehension expanded. Ice was merely its outward appearance. The true nature of her power was Stillness. This was not physical stillness, but existential stillness, a force capable of compelling reality itself to cease progressing.

The snow surrounding her transformed. It was no longer white, but now silver-blue, with a faint divine glow.

Then she saw her for the third time, the source of countless myths, the origin from which innumerable frost deities, ice spirits, and winter legends across different worlds inherited fragments of their authority.

The woman raised one hand. Within her palm rested a tiny crystal. Inside it, an entire universe remained frozen. Everything was suspended in perfect stillness.

Skadi finally spoke.

"Those who inherit my authority misunderstand it. They create ice. The gifted create glaciers. The chosen create eternal winter."

She looked directly at Chloe. For the first time, emotion appeared in her ancient eyes. Recognition.

"But an heir..." The crystal universe within her hand became perfectly motionless, and not even starlight moved. "...commands the silence that exists before creation and after destruction."

At that instant, every piece of Chloe’s enlightenment clicked into place.

Her ability wasn’t simply Absolute Zero because it could generate impossible cold. It bore that name because it represented the mana state where motion, heat, energy, and even the flow of magical phenomena approached absolute cessation.

Against ordinary fire, it froze flames. Against water, it arrested every molecule. Against mana, it could suppress circulation itself. Against weaker concepts, it could force them into dormancy.

It was no longer merely an elemental ability. It was Divine Authority, inherited through an unimaginably diluted bloodline from an ancient Winter Goddess whose dominion transcended ice itself.

Ice was simply the language mortals understood. Winter was only the season they could perceive. The true essence of her power was the authority to command Stillness itself.

And Chloe had only just taken her first step toward understanding it.

Chloe finally woke up, and the first thing she noticed was how everything was still around her. Unlike before, when there would be ice around, there was nothing now, not physically. She could feel the cold and chill in the place, but there was no ice.

Time had frozen around her. Mana had frozen, leaving only the one circulating in her... or rather, the one she allowed. She could literally see every tiny particle in the room she was in. She could feel how her senses had sharpened to even the tiniest of details.

"What is..."

Her voice had changed. It hadn’t changed in tone or anything like that, but it had become colder. When she awakened, it became cold, then after Silas gave her warmth, it regained a bit of its earlier... warmth.

But now, it was almost like how Skadi spoke. It was cold, authoritative, and a bit arrogant. She spoke like a queen, no. An Empress.

*Meow?*

A small sound brought her attention to something moving in her lap. It wasn’t affected by the stillness she was subconsciously projecting. Looking down, she saw a kitten.

It had pure white fur with blue stripes around its feet, and one long one running from its head down to its tail. Looking closely, she could see that the stripes were actually closely packed blue snowflakes.

The kitten looked up at her with its large, blue eyes and tilted its head cutely.

*Meow?*

’You gotta be kidding me...’

Seems our official Ice Empress still had some of her old habits.
